MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the CONNECT storage engine to be installed and enabled, which is NOT part of a default MariaDB installation. The attacker must be an authenticated user holding privileges to create CONNECT tables using the DOS table_type, and must supply a crafted numeric column definition and value (the regression test uses double(255,30) with a large inserted value such as 1e50) that drives a one-byte null write past a stack buffer at an attacker-controlled offset. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: authentication is required (PR:L), the vulnerable engine is non-default, and high attack complexity (AC:H) means the practical outcome is a server crash while reliable remote code execution requires precise memory control; versions before the listed fixes (10.6.1 up to the fixed releases) are affected. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS of 8.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) rates this high, but several signals temper the real-world urgency. Attack complexity is High (AC:H) and privileges are required (PR:L), meaning this is NOT an unauthenticated remote break - the attacker must already hold valid credentials with rights to create CONNECT-engine tables. No EPSS score was provided, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified - only the upstream fix commit and a regression test (double(255,30) in a DOS table) are public, which demonstrate the crash but do not constitute weaponized exploit code. The description qualifies code execution as 'potentially,' and the primitive - a single null byte written past a stack buffer at an attacker-controlled offset - reliably yields a crash (DoS) but makes reliable RCE genuinely hard, consistent with AC:H. CONFLICT TO VERIFY: the vendor marks Scope Changed (S:C), which inflates the score; I assess Scope Unchanged because the corruption and any resulting code execution are contained within the mysqld process the authenticated attacker already interacts with - this disagreement alone accounts for much of the severity. Net: a real priority only where the non-default CONNECT storage engine is enabled and untrusted authenticated users can create tables; elsewhere it is a high-CVSS issue with limited practical exposure. Treat primarily as an authenticated DoS with a secondary, lower-probability RCE risk, and patch on the normal (not emergency) track unless CONNECT is exposed to low-trust tenants. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated MariaDB user with rights to create tables on a server where the CONNECT storage engine is enabled creates a DOS-type table containing a crafted numeric column (e.g., double(255,30)) and inserts an oversized value, triggering a one-byte null write past a stack buffer in value.cpp (SetValue_char). This crashes the server (denial of service) and could potentially be developed into remote code execution in the mysqld process. No public exploit exists; only the fix commit and its regression test are available. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
An out-of-bounds stack write in the MariaDB CONNECT storage engine's DOS table type lets an authenticated user crash the server and potentially achieve code execution by supplying a crafted column definition and value. The flaw is an incorrect boundary check in the CONNECT value conversion routine that permits a one-byte null write past a stack buffer at an attacker-controlled offset (CWE-787), and it affects MariaDB from 10.6.1 up to the fixed releases 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3 and 13.0.2. Exploitation requires the non-default CONNECT engine to be installed and enabled plus privileges to create CONNECT tables of table_type 'dos' with a crafted numeric definition such as double(255,30); the vendor rates it CVSS 8.5 while the independent assessment is slightly lower (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) because authentication, a non-default engine, and high attack complexity are needed, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available, so upgrade to the fixed build on your branch: MariaDB 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3 or 13.0.2 as referenced in the GitHub advisory GHSA-4wgx-ffg9-jrwq and MDEV-40637, whose commit b369925f6855d3e1f0ebcf453492724b99fda6f8 contains the corrected boundary check. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to remove or disable the non-default CONNECT engine entirely, for example by removing the ha_connect plugin from the plugin load list or setting connect to OFF/not installed; the trade-off is loss of all CONNECT functionality and any applications depending on CONNECT tables will fail to start or resolve. If CONNECT must remain, restrict the ability to create DOS table types to trusted administrative accounts by revoking CREATE TABLE and related privileges from general users who do not need them, and audit existing grants of the CONNECT_ADMIN-style privileges; this does not eliminate the bug but removes the authenticated-user prerequisite, and it can break legitimate ETL or reporting workflows that rely on user-defined CONNECT tables. Where feasible, also consider running the server under a tightly scoped OS account and enabling crash-restart supervision so that an exploit attempt degrades into an availability incident rather than a persistent compromise, recognizing that this is containment rather than a fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MariaDB's CONNECT storage engine provides foreign-data-style access to external sources, including flat text files through its DOS table type, which maps fixed-width text columns onto typed values. The vulnerability lives in storage/connect/value.cpp inside TYPVAL<double>::SetValue_char, where a character value is copied into a fixed-size stack buffer using MY_MIN(n, 31). The original code copied MY_MIN(n, 31) bytes but left the caller's length variable unadjusted, so subsequent logic (notably the null terminator placement) used the attacker-influenced length and wrote a single null byte one position past the end of the buffer at an offset the attacker can steer. The upstream fix resolves this by assigning the clamped length back into the variable (memcpy(buf, p, n = MY_MIN(n, 31))), keeping the terminating write inside the buffer; the accompanying regression test creates a CONNECT DOS table with a double(255,30) column and inserts a large value such as 1e50 to trigger the overrun. As an out-of-bounds write class issue (CWE-787), the immediate consequence is memory corruption that in practice manifests as a server crash, with code execution requiring sufficiently precise control of the corrupted stack memory.

Authenticated DB access (PR:L) over SQL (AV:N); precise one-byte write plus non-default CONNECT engine make RCE hard (AC:H); impact contained to the mysqld process, so S:U not S:C.

2DescriptionCVE.org
MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, the CONNECT engine's DOS table type used an incorrect boundary check that permitted a one-byte null write beyond a stack buffer at an attacker-controlled offset. An authenticated user able to use the CONNECT engine could cause a crash and potentially remote code execution. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

Executive ViewAI
MariaDB database servers that have the optional CONNECT storage engine loaded are exposed to a memory-corruption flaw (CVE-2026-107815) that allows an already-authenticated user to crash the database service and potentially execute code with the database process's privileges. Because database accounts are frequently shared across applications, reporting tools, and administrative staff, a single compromised or over-privileged credential could translate into unplanned downtime or host-level compromise for every application that depends on the affected cluster. Vendor-fixed maintenance releases are identified in the advisory, so the exposure is manageable through normal patch scheduling supplemented by short-term privilege and engine hardening.
Vendor-released patch: 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, 13.0.2. Until those upgrades are applied, disable or uninstall the CONNECT storage engine where it is not required, restrict and review CREATE and INSERT privileges on accounts that could define CONNECT tables of table_type 'dos', and monitor database logs for server crashes or suspicious CONNECT table creation.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
