| Exploitation Conditions | Requires network reachability to the Nginx UI node-signature authentication endpoint (the inter-node/clustering API) on an instance running 2.5.0 through pre-2.6.0. The attacker must supply syntactically valid signature metadata, but NOT a valid body digest or cryptographic signature, because the body is staged to a temporary file and synchronized to disk before those are validated - so no authentication, user interaction, or special configuration is needed to trigger staging. Limiting factors: exploitation depth depends on available temporary filesystem capacity and disk I/O headroom, and exposure is constrained by whether the node API is actually reachable by untrusted clients (e.g., multi-node deployments or instances with the application server exposed directly rather than behind a restricted reverse proxy); the fix also caps staged bodies at 128 MiB. |
| Impact | Signals are consistent in pointing to an easy-to-reach but impact-limited flaw. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) confirms remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity exploitation, which matches the description's statement that an unauthenticated client providing only syntactically valid signature metadata can trigger the staging behavior before any cryptographic validation. However, impact is strictly availability (C:N/I:N/A:H, CWE-400 resource exhaustion) - the advisory explicitly notes no authentication bypass, confidentiality, or integrity impact, so the 7.5 'High' score is driven entirely by the DoS dimension. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no POC flag were supplied in the input, so exploitation probability and in-the-wild status cannot be quantified from available data; absence of these is not evidence of safety but should not be read as active exploitation either. Exposure is further gated by whether the node-signature/clustering API is network-reachable - in single-node deployments that endpoint may not be exposed. Net: a legitimate patch-worthy availability bug (trivial to exploit where the node API is reachable), but not a confidentiality/integrity emergency and, absent EPSS/KEV, not demonstrably under mass exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker who can reach the Nginx UI node-signature API sends repeated or large request bodies accompanied by syntactically valid signature metadata. Because each body is staged to a temporary file and synchronized to disk before the digest and signature are validated, the attacker consumes temporary filesystem capacity, disk I/O, and request-processing resources and can degrade or crash the service. No public POC was identified in the provided data, though the fixing commit and GHSA advisory document the exact mechanism. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Unauthenticated remote clients that can reach the Nginx UI node-signature authentication API on versions 2.5.0 through pre-2.6.0 can force the server to stage attacker-controlled request bodies to temporary files and flush them to disk before any digest or cryptographic signature validation occurs, allowing exhaustion of temporary filesystem capacity, disk I/O, and request-processing resources. The impact is availability-only (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) - authentication is not bypassed and there is no confidentiality or integrity impact. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not confirmed as actively exploited (no CISA KEV listing); vendor-released patch: 2.6.0, which caps staged node request bodies at 128 MiB and adds a pre-read ContentLength check.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Nginx UI to 2.6.0 or later (Vendor-released patch: 2.6.0), which bounds staged node request bodies at 128 MiB, rejects oversized requests based on declared Content-Length before reading, and cleans up partial temporary files; the fix is contained in commit 8c9b9a1aff218ee6c980d047b750e49da3c46796 and documented in advisory GHSA-j3hg-9rp3-5hw9. If immediate upgrading is not possible, reduce exposure by ensuring the node-signature/inter-node API is never reachable by untrusted clients: keep Nginx UI behind a reverse proxy or firewall rule that permits only trusted node IPs (trade-off: this can break multi-node clustering and remote node management until the allowlist is updated), and avoid binding the application server directly to public interfaces. Additionally, monitor and cap the size/growth rate of the temporary filesystem used by TMPDIR (files named nginx-ui-node-request-body-*) and alert on disk I/O spikes or fsync latency from the Nginx UI process, since those are the observable symptoms of this resource-exhaustion pattern; these controls only mitigate the impact and do not remove the underlying flaw. Note that no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the issue is trivially reachable (unauthenticated, PR:N) where the API is exposed, so remediation should not be deferred solely on the absence of a published exploit.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Nginx UI is a Go-based web management interface for the nginx web server, and it includes an inter-node/clustering feature whose requests are authenticated through a "node-signature" scheme (the internal/nodeauth package). In the vulnerable flow, temporaryRequestBody/stageRequestBody reads the incoming HTTP body through io.Copy into an io.MultiWriter that simultaneously writes the bytes to a temporary file (nginx-ui-node-request-body-* under TMPDIR) and feeds them into a SHA-256 digest; the file is synchronized to disk before the code compares the computed digest and verifies the cryptographic signature against the supplied signature metadata. Because staging happens first, an attacker who merely presents syntactically valid signature metadata - without a valid digest or signature - still causes unbounded disk writes and fsyncs. This is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption): the root cause is the absence of a size bound on the staged body. The upstream fix in commit 8c9b9a1 introduces the constant maxStagedRequestBodySize = 128 << 20 (128 MiB), rejects requests whose declared ContentLength already exceeds the limit without reading the body, wraps the copy in io.LimitReader, and then performs a one-byte over-read (io.CopyN into io.Discard) to detect and clean up streams that exceed the cap, returning errRequestBodyTooLarge. Affected products per the CPE cpe:2.3:a:0xjacky:nginx-ui cover the 2.5.0 through pre-2.6.0 release range.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Nginx UI is a web user interface for the Nginx web server. From 2.5.0 until 2.6.0, the node-signature authentication path performs temporary file staging of an attacker-controlled request body and synchronizes it before validating the body digest and cryptographic signature. An unauthenticated remote client that can reach the API and provide syntactically valid signature metadata can consume temporary filesystem capacity, disk input and output, and request-processing resources before rejection. The issue affects availability and does not bypass authentication or provide confidentiality or integrity impact. This issue is fixed in version 2.6.0.

Technical POC Analysis
CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption), via an order-of-operations defect in the node-signature authentication path of Nginx UI.

Executive ViewAI
Nginx UI versions 2.5.0 through pre-2.6.0 are exposed to an unauthenticated remote resource-exhaustion flaw that can take the management interface offline by filling temporary disk space and saturating I/O. Because the Nginx UI is used to administer web infrastructure, its unavailability could delay configuration changes and incident response, even though no data confidentiality or integrity is at risk. A vendor-released patch (2.6.0) is available, and internet-exposed or broadly reachable instances should be prioritized for remediation.
Apply vendor patch.
