| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the nginx-ui instance to be in its first-run unconfigured state, after initial deployment but before the legitimate administrator completes the setup wizard via the /api/install endpoint. The vulnerability window opens when the nginx-ui service starts for the first time and closes permanently once any user successfully submits valid installation parameters. Network reachability to the nginx-ui web interface (typically TCP port 80, 443, or custom ports like 8080) from the attacker's position is required-exploitation succeeds against internet-facing deployments or internal instances accessible to the attacker. No authentication, credentials, or user interaction is required; the /api/install endpoint accepts requests from any source during this initialization phase. Attack complexity stems not from technical barriers but from timing: the attacker must reach the endpoint before legitimate operators, making this a race condition rather than a persistent flaw. Cloud deployments with public IP assignment before configuration, containerized instances with exposed ports during orchestration, or installations following documented setup guides that create exposure windows are most susceptible. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 score of 8.1 (High) reflects substantial impact potential: network-accessible attack vector (AV:N), no privileges required (PR:N), no user interaction (UI:N), and high impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H). However, attack complexity is HIGH (AC:H) due to the narrow exploitation window-the vulnerability only exists during initial deployment before legitimate configuration. This temporal constraint significantly reduces real-world risk compared to persistent authentication bypasses. No CISA KEV listing suggests this is not being exploited at scale, consistent with the time-sensitive nature requiring attackers to monitor for new nginx-ui deployments. EPSS score unavailable, limiting probabilistic risk assessment. The SSVC framework would categorize this as requiring specialized conditions (non-default state = fresh installation), with high technical impact but low automatable exploitation due to timing requirements. Priority depends heavily on organizational deployment practices: high risk for cloud environments with publicly exposed instances during provisioning, moderate risk for private networks with controlled deployment windows. The permanent nature of the takeover (attacker sets credentials that persist indefinitely) elevates severity once successfully exploited, but the pre-condition of catching a fresh installation before legitimate setup makes this a targeted threat rather than opportunistic scanning risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker continuously scans cloud provider IP ranges for newly deployed nginx-ui instances listening on default ports (typically 80/443 or 8080). When detecting an unconfigured instance via fingerprinting responses, the attacker immediately sends a crafted POST request to /api/install containing their own email, username, and password before the legitimate administrator completes setup. The encrypted request bypasses no authentication checks and successfully creates the administrative account with attacker-controlled credentials. The legitimate operator, arriving minutes later, finds the instance already configured and either fails to notice the compromise or assumes a colleague completed setup. The attacker maintains persistent administrative access to the Nginx management interface, enabling web server reconfiguration, traffic interception, or pivot points into backend infrastructure. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – May 04, 2026
Unauthenticated attackers can hijack the administrator account during nginx-ui's first-run installation window by claiming the /api/install endpoint before legitimate operators. This race-condition vulnerability in nginx-ui versions 2.0.0 through 2.3.7 bypasses authentication controls entirely, allowing complete instance takeover with attacker-controlled credentials. The request-encryption mechanism protects only transit confidentiality, not authorization. Attack complexity is rated HIGH due to the narrow time window between deployment and legitimate setup completion. EPSS data unavailable; no CISA KEV listing or public POC identified at time of analysis, but exploitation requires only standard HTTP tools and timing.
RemediationAI
Upgrade immediately to nginx-ui version 2.3.8 or later, released by the vendor to address this vulnerability (https://github.com/0xJacky/nginx-ui/releases/tag/v2.3.8). Version 2.3.8 implements authentication controls on the /api/install endpoint to prevent unauthorized setup requests. For environments unable to upgrade immediately, implement network-level access controls to restrict the /api/install endpoint to trusted IP addresses during initial deployment-configure firewall rules or reverse proxy ACLs to block external access until setup is complete, then remove restrictions. Deploy new instances in isolated network segments unreachable from the internet during setup, completing configuration before exposing to production networks; this mitigation adds operational complexity to deployment pipelines but eliminates the race-condition window. Monitor authentication logs after any deployment to verify the configured administrator credentials match expected values; unauthorized account creation would indicate successful exploitation requiring immediate instance rebuild. For cloud or container deployments, use infrastructure-as-code to automate configuration immediately post-provisioning, minimizing the window of exposure to milliseconds rather than human-time intervals.

Nginx UI (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:0xjacky:nginx-ui) is a web-based management interface for the Nginx web server. The vulnerability stems from CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function) in the installation initialization flow. The /api/install endpoint, designed for first-run setup, lacks authentication controls and accepts installation requests from any network-reachable source. While the implementation uses request encryption to protect credentials in transit, this cryptographic layer only ensures confidentiality-it does not verify that the requester is authorized to configure the instance. This design flaw creates a race condition where the first client to successfully invoke the endpoint gains permanent administrative access. The vulnerability exists in the initialization logic that transitions the application from unconfigured to production state without validating the legitimacy of the setup request.

Nginx UI is a web user interface for the Nginx web server. From version 2.0.0 to before version 2.3.8, an unauthenticated network attacker can claim the initial administrator account on a fresh nginx-ui instance during the first-run setup window. The public /api/install endpoint is reachable without authentication, and the request-encryption flow only protects payload confidentiality in transit; it does not authenticate who is allowed to perform installation. A remote attacker who reaches the service before the legitimate operator can set the admin email, username, and password, causing permanent initial-instance takeover. This issue has been patched in version 2.3.8.
Executive ViewAI
nginx-ui versions 2.0.0-2.3.7 contain a race-condition vulnerability in the first-run installation endpoint that allows unauthenticated attackers to seize administrator control before legitimate operators complete setup, resulting in complete instance compromise. Organizations deploying or recently deployed nginx-ui are at immediate risk of account hijacking and full administrative takeover during the installation window. This vulnerability bypasses all authentication controls during a critical operational phase.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Restrict network access to the /api/install endpoint via firewall or reverse proxy to authorized administrator IP ranges only; (2) Complete the nginx-ui installation process immediately after deployment to close the race-condition window; (3) Disable external network routing to /api/install until installation is confirmed complete; (4) Audit and document all administrator accounts and credentials immediately after setup; (5) Enable comprehensive logging on the /api/install endpoint to detect unauthorized access attempts. Monitor vendor security advisories daily for patch availability.
