| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must be able to issue Redis replication commands to the target so that FalkorDB processes an attacker-supplied RDB stream - in practice this means an instance reachable with no password set (the default, unauthenticated case cited in the description) or where the attacker can otherwise act as/inject a replication source. The specific trigger is an RDB deleted-nodes (or deleted-edges) buffer whose byte length is not a multiple of sizeof(NodeID)/sizeof(EdgeID), which bypasses the release-build-removed ASSERT in RdbLoadDeletedNodes/RdbLoadDeletedEdges. Limiting factors: instances configured with authentication (requirepass) or network-restricted so that untrusted peers cannot initiate replication are not exposed to unauthenticated exploitation, and only FalkorDB versions before 4.18.1 are affected; reliable code execution (versus a crash) additionally depends on heap layout and is not guaranteed. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely high-priority memory-corruption flaw, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk paper cut. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated issue with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (9.3), and the technical root cause is credible: a CWE-415 double free / use-after-free caused by a validation check implemented with ASSERT(), which is compiled out of release builds, so a mis-sized deleted-nodes buffer is freed, then read and freed again. The patch diff confirms the mechanism precisely and shows the fix replacing ASSERT with a real runtime check (RedisModule_Assert plus a length-and-count validation). The one important caveat is the PR:N rating: the description scopes the attacker to one 'who can issue Redis replication commands (for example, against an instance with no password configured)', so true unauthenticated exploitation specifically assumes a default/passwordless or otherwise replication-reachable deployment - on a properly authenticated instance this becomes an authenticated or privileged operation, which the raw CVSS score does not reflect. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the input; absence of these means there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation at time of analysis, so prioritization should rest on the strong technical impact plus exposure of passwordless instances rather than on observed exploitation. Reaching reliable RCE from a double free is also non-trivial in practice, so denial of service (process crash) is the more certain outcome while code execution is plausible but unproven. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a FalkorDB instance that has no password configured issues Redis replication commands to feed the server a crafted RDB stream in which the deleted-nodes buffer length is not a multiple of sizeof(NodeID). Because the alignment check uses ASSERT() (removed in release builds), RdbLoadDeletedNodes frees the buffer and keeps going, reading and freeing it again, corrupting the heap to crash the redis-server process or potentially execute arbitrary code. No public proof-of-concept is identified at time of analysis, but the fixing PR #1843 documents the exact flawed code path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Remote attackers who can issue Redis replication commands to a FalkorDB instance before 4.18.1 can trigger a double-free/use-after-free in the RDB graph decoder, causing a denial of service (redis-server crash) or potentially arbitrary code execution in the redis-server process. The root cause is a buffer-size validation in RdbLoadDeletedNodes/RdbLoadDeletedEdges that relies on ASSERT(), which is compiled out in release builds, so a deleted-nodes buffer whose byte length is not a multiple of sizeof(NodeID) passes unchecked, is freed, then read and freed again. Exploitation is unauthenticated (CVSS PR:N) on instances without a password or otherwise reachable by an untrusted replication source; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and reliable code execution depends on heap layout.
RemediationAI
Upgrade FalkorDB to version 4.18.1 or later, which contains the fix (release tag: https://github.com/FalkorDB/FalkorDB/releases/tag/v4.18.1; commit 523d98ac7ffe99f11a9c95c258025c235f0dff4c; PR #1843). No vendor workaround is documented beyond patching, so if an immediate upgrade is not possible, enforce Redis authentication by setting a strong requirepass so that unauthenticated replication commands cannot be issued (side effect: all clients must now authenticate, and any automation using the passwordless default will break). Additionally, restrict network access to the Redis/FalkorDB port (default 6379) using firewall rules or bind directives so that only trusted replication peers can connect (side effect: may block legitimate replication topologies; verify allowed sources). Disabling replication entirely is not practical for most deployments, but reducing the attack surface by not exposing the instance to untrusted networks is an effective compensating control. The patch also hardens the symmetric RdbLoadDeletedEdges path, so upgrading addresses both triggers.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FalkorDB is a graph database that runs as a Redis module, persisting data using Redis's RDB serialization format. The vulnerable code lives in the RDB graph entity decoders (src/serializers/decoders/prev/v17, prev/v18, current/v19/decode_graph_entities.c), in functions RdbLoadDeletedNodes and RdbLoadDeletedEdges, which read deleted node/edge ID lists from an RDB stream. These functions validate that the buffer length is a multiple of sizeof(NodeID)/sizeof(EdgeID) and matches the expected count, but the check is performed with ASSERT(), which is a no-op in release builds (NDEBUG). As a result, a malformed RDB with an unaligned deleted-nodes buffer is freed via rm_free and then read and freed again, causing a double free (CWE-415) and use-after-free. The patch (PR #1843 / commit 523d98ac) replaces the ASSERT with explicit checks plus RedisModule_Log and RedisModule_Assert(false), ensuring the condition is enforced in production builds.

DescriptionCVE.org
A double free and use-after-free vulnerability in the RdbLoadDeletedNodes function of the RDB graph decoders (src/serializers/decoders/*/decode_graph_entities.c) in FalkorDB before 4.18.1 allows a remote attacker who can issue Redis replication commands (for example, against an instance with no password configured) to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code in the redis-server process by supplying a crafted RDB stream whose deleted-nodes buffer length is not a multiple of sizeof(NodeID). The length check relies on ASSERT(), which is compiled out in release builds, so the function continues after freeing the buffer, reading it and freeing it a second time.

Executive ViewAI
FalkorDB, a graph database used for real-time analytics and applications, contains a critical vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to crash the service or potentially execute arbitrary code, disrupting operations and risking data compromise. Leadership should prioritize remediation because exposed instances could be taken offline or compromised without warning, affecting customer-facing services and internal data integrity. The risk is heightened for organizations using FalkorDB in mission-critical or internet-accessible environments.
