Unauthenticated network reach (PR:N/AV:N), but prototype-pollution-to-RCE needs the optional plugin enabled and a reachable gadget, so AC:H; impact is full code execution (C/I/A:H).

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions from 3.0.0 before 3.88.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.27, an unauthenticated user can submit prototype-sensitive field paths when @payloadcms/plugin-import-export is enabled, causing unintended application behavior that can lead to remote code execution. This issue is fixed in versions 3.88.0 and 4.0.0-canary.27.
AnalysisAI
Prototype pollution in Payload CMS's @payloadcms/plugin-import-export module lets an unauthenticated remote attacker submit prototype-sensitive field paths to the plugin's endpoints, corrupting object prototypes and triggering unintended application behavior that can escalate to remote code execution. The flaw affects Payload 3.0.0 through versions before 3.88.0 and 4.0.0-canary.0 through versions before 4.0.0-canary.27, but only when the Import Export plugin is installed and enabled - sites without that plugin are unaffected. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires the @payloadcms/plugin-import-export plugin to be installed and enabled on the Payload instance - applications without this plugin are not affected (vendor-confirmed). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a credible high-priority issue, not merely a high-CVSS paper risk, but its blast radius is gated by one specific condition. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade the @payloadcms/plugin-import-export package (and the Payload packages it depends on) to 3.88.0 or later on the 3.x line, or to 4.0.0-canary.27 or later on the canary line, following https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/releases/tag/v3.88.0; the code change is in commit a742140ab4fca3160f7f83e9e7d996552ffc3b5a, which adds sort/query path validation via validateSortQuery and validateQueryPaths. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every Payload CMS deployment and confirm whether @payloadcms/plugin-import-export is installed and enabled, then treat any confirmed instance as exposed: where the plugin is not business-critical, disable or remove it immediately, and where it must remain, restrict its endpoints to trusted networks or authenticated internal users only and add detection for prototype-manipulation payloads (keys such as __proto__, constructor, and prototype) in request logs and WAF alerts. …
