Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to control (or compromise) a container registry or OCI-layout blob source that a victim's BuildKit build will fetch from, and the attacker must return blob content whose bytes do not match the claimed content digest. A victim must then actually run a build (UI:A / AT:P) that references and caches that digest, after which later builds reusing the digest-keyed snapshot inherit the poisoned input. Limiting factors: the victim must build against the attacker-influenced source, so trusted/pinned private-registry-only pipelines with verified sources are far less exposed; there is no confidentiality or availability impact, and no privileges are required of the attacker (PR:N) but no fully passive remote trigger exists.

Impact

This is a moderate, conditions-dependent integrity flaw rather than a drop-everything emergency. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 score of 5.9 is driven by VI:H (high integrity impact to the vulnerable build) tempered by AT:P (a specific attack requirement) and UI:A (the victim must actively perform a build). There is no confidentiality (VC:N) or availability (VA:N) impact, so the 'Information Disclosure' tag conflicts with the actual integrity/cache-poisoning nature of CWE-354 - treat that tag as unreliable. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no POC indicator were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The practical risk hinges on whether a victim builds against an attacker-influenced registry or OCI-layout source; in software-supply-chain/CI contexts that is a meaningful threat (poisoned build inputs), but it is not remote-unauthenticated-against-default exploitation. PR:N means no authentication is needed by the attacker, but UI:A plus AT:P substantially narrow real-world opportunity. Net: credible supply-chain integrity concern warranting prompt patching in CI/CD fleets, but not a mass-exploitation-class issue.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker operating or compromising a container registry (or an OCI-layout blob source referenced by a build) serves blob contents that do not match the claimed digest. BuildKit caches the resulting snapshot keyed by that digest, so a later victim build that references the same digest silently reuses the poisoned snapshot, corrupting its build inputs. No public exploit code was identified; exploitation requires the victim to actually run an affected build against the attacker-influenced source (UI:A, AT:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

BuildKit can cache a fetched snapshot under a claimed content digest without adequately verifying that the blob bytes match that digest, letting an attacker who controls or compromises a registry or OCI-layout blob source poison the cache and compromise the integrity of later victim builds that reuse that digest. The attacker does not need credentials per the CVSS PR:N vector, but they must be able to serve BuildKit blob requests, and a victim must run a build against the attacker-influenced source for exploitation to matter. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis; vendor patch v0.33.1 is available, and an independent assessment rates this as a moderate, conditions-dependent integrity flaw rather than a drop-everything emergency.

RemediationAI

Upgrade BuildKit to v0.33.1 or later; the vendor has released a patch at https://github.com/moby/buildkit/releases/tag/v0.33.1 and published an advisory at https://github.com/moby/buildkit/security/advisories/GHSA-p3rc-w3hc-pqvv. If immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by building only from trusted, access-controlled registries or OCI-layout sources and avoiding builds that fetch blobs from attacker-influenceable sources. Isolate builders and cache volumes so a poisoned digest-keyed snapshot from an untrusted build cannot be reused by trusted pipelines, and purge or invalidate cache entries produced from untrusted sources. These compensating controls do not fix the missing digest validation and have trade-offs: restricting registries or cache reuse can break multi-source builds and reduce build-cache efficiency.

Technical ContextAI · show details

BuildKit is Docker's build engine for container image construction. It represents images and build inputs as content-addressed blobs in OCI registries or local OCI layouts; a blob's digest is supposed to cryptographically bind the bytes to the identifier. CVE-2026-93317 is CWE-354 (Improper Validation of Integrity Check Value): the digest check for fetched blob content can be bypassed or not enforced before the resulting snapshot is cached under the claimed digest. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:moby:buildkit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers BuildKit versions affected before the fix. Integrity impact is primarily on build inputs and downstream artifacts, with subsequent-system integrity low in the CVSS 4.0 vector and high integrity impact in the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment; there is no confidentiality or availability impact. Exploitation requires attacker control of a registry/OCI-layout source, a victim build that fetches from it, and cache reuse of the poisoned digest-keyed snapshot. DescriptionCVE.org

An unauthenticated attacker controlling a registry or OCI-layout blob source could provide blob contents that did not match the claimed digest. The resulting snapshot could be cached under that digest and reused by a later victim build, compromising build-input integrity.
