Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
The next dev development server in Next.js 16.0.0 through 16.3.7 improperly restricts cross-site requests to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) endpoint at /_next/mcp, allowing a malicious website visited by a developer to read sensitive local project data including disk paths, source code snippets from error reports, route inventories, and development logs. The vulnerability is limited to development environments - production deployments do not serve this endpoint - and exploitation requires an active next dev session plus the developer navigating to attacker-controlled content (CVSS 4.0 AT:P prerequisite). Unauthenticated (PR:N) but requiring user interaction; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. CVSS 4.0 base score 6.3 (Medium), fixed in Next.js 16.3.8.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Next.js to version 16.3.8, which contains the vendor patch (commit 2d9f50a409312696145b82b3157aadb6b1fef476) that replaces imprecise URL string matching with proper pathname parsing and exact matching for the /_next/mcp endpoint. See the GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-f87g-xv8r-7p7x and release notes for v16.3.8. Until upgrading, avoid running next dev while browsing untrusted websites in the same browser session, or use a dedicated browser profile for development; alternatively, bind the dev server to 127.0.0.1 (if not already) and consider blocking cross-origin requests to /_next/mcp at the OS firewall level, though this may interfere with legitimate MCP tooling. Because the endpoint is dev-only, production systems require no action.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CWE-346 (Origin Validation Error) in the Next.js development server's handling of cross-site requests to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) endpoint. MCP is a protocol used by AI coding assistants and developer tools to interact with the dev server; the endpoint lives at /_next/mcp. Prior to the fix, the server's cross-site request blocking logic and the MCP middleware path check both relied on imprecise string matching (req.url.includes('/_next') and pathname.startsWith('/_next/mcp')) on the raw request URL, making it possible for a malicious page to craft requests that evade the origin restrictions and reach the endpoint. The patch (commit 2d9f50a409312696145b82b3157aadb6b1fef476) replaces these with proper pathname extraction via parsePath and exact matching (removeTrailingSlash(pathname) !== '/_next/mcp'). The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:vercel:next.js:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected product family. Production deployments are not impacted because they do not expose the MCP endpoint.

Next.js is a React framework for building full-stack web applications. From 16.0.0 until 16.3.8, the next dev development server exposes a Model Context Protocol endpoint without reliably restricting cross-site requests. A malicious website visited by a developer can reach the endpoint and read the project's disk location, source code snippets from error reports, route inventory, and development logs. Production deployments do not serve this endpoint. This issue is fixed in version 16.3.8.
