| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a target Joomla site running Balbooa Forms < 2.4.3.4 where an administrator has enabled the extension's OPTIONAL 'PHP-after-submission' action AND has interpolated an attacker-controllable form-field shortcode inside a double-quoted PHP string within that code. When those conditions hold, exploitation is remote and unauthenticated (PR:N/UI:N) via a normal public form submission against default network exposure. The limiting factor is entirely this non-default administrator configuration (reflected as AT:P in the 4.0 vector); sites that do not use the PHP-after-submission feature, or that do not interpolate submitted field shortcodes into the PHP, are not vulnerable. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 9.5 (critical) reflects CWE-94 code injection reaching PHP eval() with full VC/VI/VA:H and SC/SI/SA:H, i.e. server-side remote code execution. Two signals temper the raw score. First, the 4.0 vector itself carries AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present) and the description confirms this: the flaw is only reachable when an administrator has (a) enabled the optional 'PHP-after-submission' action AND (b) interpolated an attacker-controlled field shortcode inside a double-quoted PHP string. This is a non-default, operator-created condition, so despite PR:N/UI:N the real-world exposed population is a subset of installs. Second, exploitation signals are absent: no EPSS score, not on CISA KEV, and no public POC identified at time of analysis - this is a Joomla-org-reported advisory with only a vendor homepage reference. So this is a genuinely high-impact RCE where a vulnerable configuration exists, but not currently evidenced as widely or actively exploited. Note the CVSS 4.0 AC:L (attacker's own action is trivial) coexists with AT:P (target must be configured a specific way); a 3.1 mapping folds that config dependency into AC:H, which is why my independent 3.1 base is lower than the headline 9.5. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies a public Balbooa Forms form on a Joomla site whose admin has enabled the PHP-after-submission action and embedded a field shortcode inside a double-quoted PHP string. The attacker submits the form with a malicious value in that field; the component substitutes the raw submitted value into the PHP source and passes it to eval(), executing attacker-supplied code on the web server. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026
Unauthenticated remote code execution in the Balbooa Forms extension for Joomla (versions before 2.4.3.4) lets a visitor submit a crafted public form that results in attacker-controlled PHP being evaluated server-side. The root cause is that the extension substitutes form-field shortcodes with the raw value submitted by the visitor before passing administrator-defined 'PHP after submission' code to eval(), allowing a value to break out of a double-quoted PHP string. Exploitation is conditional, not blanket: it requires an administrator to have enabled the optional PHP-after-submission action and to have interpolated an attacker-controllable field shortcode inside a double-quoted string, a non-default configuration reflected as AT:P. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and no CPE string was supplied; the vendor scores this 9.5 (critical) whereas our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Balbooa Forms for Joomla to version 2.4.3.4 or later, which is the vendor-released fix version per the advisory; verify the installed manifest version after updating and confirm the vendor page at https://www.balbooa.com/ for any follow-up guidance. Because exploitation hinges on an optional, administrator-configured feature rather than on the extension alone, immediate compensating controls are effective: disable the PHP-after-submission action on every public form (this removes the eval() sink entirely, at the cost of losing that custom post-submission logic), and audit any form that does use it so that submitted field shortcodes are not interpolated inside double-quoted PHP strings - remove the shortcode from the code body or reference values without embedding them as PHP string literals, accepting the loss of that dynamic behaviour. Additional hardening includes restricting which forms are publicly submittable during the window before patching and deploying WAF rules that flag double-quote and PHP metacharacter sequences in form-submission parameters, recognising that such signatures can produce false positives on legitimate free-text fields. Any site that has already enabled the feature should be treated as potentially compromised and reviewed, since successful eval() gives full C:H/I:H/A:H impact within the web server's execution context.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a CWE-94 code injection class flaw in a Joomla component. Balbooa Forms exposes a feature in which an administrator writes PHP that is executed after a public form is submitted; that code is passed to PHP's eval(). The same feature supports form-field shortcodes inside the PHP body, and the component performs shortcode substitution using the raw value submitted by the visitor before calling eval(). If an administrator places such a shortcode inside a double-quoted PHP string, a visitor-supplied value containing a double quote (and subsequent PHP syntax) escapes the string context and is executed as code. This is a template/interpolation failure at the boundary between untrusted form input and a code-evaluation sink rather than a memory-safety issue. The CVSS 4.0 vector marks AT:P because the attack depends on the non-default post-submission PHP configuration; the assessed 3.1 vector lowers to AC:H for the same reason while retaining PR:N and UI:N, since the triggering submission is a normal unauthenticated public form post.

DescriptionCVE.org
Joomla Extension - balbooa.com - Unauthenticated RCE via field shortcode injection in Balbooa Forms < 2.4.3.4 - Balbooa Forms supports administrator-defined PHP code which runs after a public form submission. The feature also supports form-field shortcodes inside that PHP. Before calling eval(), the component replaces each shortcode with the raw value submitted by the visitor, leading to an RCE vector. A public form must use the product's optional PHP-after-submission action and interpolate an attacker-controlled field shortcode inside a double-quoted PHP string to be vulnerable.

Executive ViewAI
The Balbooa Forms extension for Joomla (versions before 2.4.3.4) contains a critical unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take full control of affected web servers. Exploitation requires a non-default configuration where administrators have enabled the optional PHP-after-submission action and interpolated user-controllable form fields within double-quoted strings; no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Organizations using this extension should urgently verify their configuration and apply mitigations, as a successful attack could lead to data breach, service disruption, and reputational damage.
Disable the 'PHP after submission' feature in Balbooa Forms; ensure no attacker-controllable field shortcodes are interpolated inside double-quoted strings; restrict administrator access; deploy WAF rules to block malicious form submissions; monitor logs for suspicious PHP evaluation.
