MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to manually import a maliciously crafted Wireshark configuration profile - this user-interaction step (UI:R) and the local attack vector (AV:L) are the primary limiting factors, since there is no network-facing or automatic trigger. No authentication to the product is needed (PR:N), but the attacker depends entirely on social engineering to get the crafted profile delivered and imported. Only Wireshark versions 4.4.0 through 4.4.18 and 4.6.0 through 4.6.8 are affected; the path-traversal flaw (CWE-22) is in the profile import handling specifically, so environments where analysts never import externally sourced profiles face minimal exposure. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-priority issue rather than an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.8 is driven by HIGH confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact (C:H/I:H/A:H) reflecting the 'possible code execution' outcome, but the exploitability metrics meaningfully constrain real-world risk: the attack vector is LOCAL (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:R), meaning a victim must be convinced to import a malicious Wireshark profile rather than an attacker reaching the target over the network. Supporting signals align with a lower-urgency picture: EPSS is only 0.19% (7th percentile), SSVC marks Exploitation as 'poc' (not active), Automatable as 'no', and Technical Impact as 'partial', and the vulnerability is NOT listed in CISA KEV. Note one internal tension worth flagging: the SSVC 'Technical Impact: partial' rating is softer than the full C:H/I:H/A:H in the CVSS vector and the 'possible code execution' language - the word 'possible' suggests code execution is not reliably demonstrated, so the HIGH integrity/confidentiality impact should be treated as a worst-case upper bound rather than a confirmed capability. Net: a real but not widespread threat, best handled via normal patch cycles with priority for analysts who routinely import third-party capture profiles. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious Wireshark configuration profile (leveraging the CWE-22 path traversal weakness) and distributes it via a forum, shared incident-response bundle, or email to a network analyst. When the victim imports the profile into a vulnerable Wireshark version (4.4.0-4.4.18 or 4.6.0-4.6.8), the import logic crashes, causing denial of service and potentially executing attacker-controlled code in the analyst's user context. Public proof-of-concept material exists per the SSVC assessment, but no active exploitation has been reported. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Oct 08, 2026
Path traversal in Wireshark's configuration-profile import handler (CWE-22) allows a maliciously crafted profile to write files outside the intended profile directory, crashing the application and potentially achieving code execution in the user's context. Affected releases are Wireshark 4.4.0 through 4.4.18 and 4.6.0 through 4.6.8; the flaw is rated CVSS 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R) and requires the victim to manually import the attacker-supplied profile, so exploitation depends on social engineering rather than a network-facing or automatic trigger. Publicly available exploit code exists and the issue is tracked as wnpa-sec-2026-106, but it is not confirmed as actively exploited (CISA KEV) and EPSS is low at 0.19% (7th percentile), making this a moderate-priority issue rather than an emergency; patched releases 4.4.19 and 4.6.9 are available from the vendor.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Wireshark 4.6.0-4.6.8 and 4.4.0-4.4.18 can cause denial of service, and have been tagged as potentially allowing code execution, when a local user imports a maliciously crafted configuration profile through the profile import feature. The issue is a path traversal (CWE-22) that requires the victim to manually import an untrusted profile, so exploitation depends on social engineering and explicit user interaction rather than remote or passive capture parsing. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, no CISA KEV confirmation, and the assessed CVSS vector is availability-focused (C:N/I:N/A:H), making this a moderate priority despite the RCE tag.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to the vendor-fixed releases: Wireshark 4.4.19 or later on the 4.4 branch, and Wireshark 4.6.9 or later on the 4.6 branch (patch available per the vendor advisory at https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-106.html, with technical detail in https://gitlab.com/wireshark/wireshark/-/work_items/21553). Until upgrading, the most effective compensating control is procedural: do not import configuration profiles from untrusted or external sources, and treat any profile archive received by email, chat, or download as untrusted - inspect the archive contents and reject any entry containing "../" or absolute paths before importing, understanding that this relies on analyst diligence and does not fix the underlying code path. Run Wireshark as a non-administrative, least-privilege account so that a successful traversal write cannot reach privileged locations, and tighten filesystem permissions on the Wireshark personal configuration/profile directories so they are writable only by the owning user; the trade-off is degraded usability for legitimate profile sharing. If Lua or other scriptable profile resources are not required in your environment, consider disabling/restricting them (e.g., disabling Lua scripting or blocking script-based extensions) to remove the most direct file-write-to-code-execution path, accepting the loss of automation features. Note that the flaw is not remotely triggerable, so perimeter controls (network filtering, IDS signatures) provide little value here; user awareness training against profile-import social engineering is the complementary measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wireshark uses importable configuration profiles - directories or archives containing preferences, colorfilters, dfilters, and similar resource files - to let analysts share consistent capture/display settings. CVE-2026-96419 is a CWE-22 improper-limitation-of-pathname flaw in that import routine: entries whose names contain traversal sequences (for example "../") are not sanitized, so extracted files can land outside the profile directory. Because a profile can define resources that Wireshark later loads (including scripting-related and startup resources), arbitrary file write inside the user's profile/config tree is the bridge from a simple crash (denial of service) to possible code execution under the importing user's privileges. The CVSS vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H confirms the key constraints: no authentication is required (PR:N), but the attack is local (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:R) - the victim must deliberately import the crafted profile. CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:wireshark_foundation:wireshark) is broadly scoped, and ENISA EUVD-2026-88712 narrows the affected ranges to 4.4.0 <4.4.19 and 4.6.0 <4.6.9.

Profile import crash in 4.6.0 to 4.6.8 and 4.4.0 to 4.4.18 allows denial of service and possible code execution
Executive ViewAI
Wireshark, a widely used network protocol analyzer, contains a high-severity path traversal vulnerability (CVE-2026-96419) in its configuration-profile import handler. An attacker can craft a malicious profile that, when manually imported by a user, writes files outside the intended directory and may achieve code execution in the user's context. While publicly available exploit code exists, there is no evidence of active exploitation, and the issue requires user interaction, making it a moderate priority for remediation.
