Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the operator has previously granted a reusable 'allow-always' exec approval for a command, and that an attacker can steer the agent into reusing that approval against a different working directory (unreviewed files or repositories). It is NOT exploitable against a default install with no standing approvals. Limiting factors: the pre-existing allow-always grant must exist; the attacker must influence agent behavior (passive user/agent interaction, UI:P); and impact is bounded by what the already-approved command can do. Affects OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional authorization flaw (CWE-863) in OpenClaw, an open-source AI-agent framework, not a broadly-exploitable network vulnerability. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (8.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) drives the high score, but it likely overstates real-world ease: exploitation is not a clean remote-attacker scenario - it requires a pre-existing operator 'allow-always' exec approval AND a steered/misdirected agent turn to reuse that approval in an unintended working directory. That is closer to AC:H than AC:L, which is why my independent 3.1 assessment lands near 7.3 rather than the vendor's 8.5. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. Signals are internally consistent (all point to a real-but-gated integrity/confidentiality issue), with the only conflict being attack complexity: the description's 'must already have an allow-always approval' precondition contradicts the vendor's AC:L. Treat as a real hardening priority for OpenClaw operators who use exec approvals, but not an emergency; the niche deployment footprint further lowers aggregate risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An OpenClaw operator previously granted an 'allow-always' approval for a specific exec command (e.g. a build or lint tool) while working in a trusted repository. An attacker who can steer the agent - via a crafted message, task, or file - causes that same approved command to run in a different, unreviewed directory, so the reused approval now operates on sensitive or attacker-chosen files with materially different effect. No public proof-of-concept was provided; exploitation depends on the prior approval and the passive user interaction of the agent acting on attacker-influenced input.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Directory-context bypass in OpenClaw before 2026.8.1 allows authenticated attackers with user interaction to reuse an 'allow-always' exec approval to execute the same command against unreviewed files or repositories, escaping the original approved working directory. Exploitation requires a pre-existing 'allow-always' approval and the ability to influence agent behavior; it is not exploitable on a default installation with no standing approvals. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to OpenClaw 2026.8.1 or later. This version binds working-directory context to exec approvals, preventing reuse across directories. Apply the update by following the instructions in the vendor advisory at https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/security/advisories/GHSA-3mq7-q27j-mq7q. If immediate upgrade is not possible, avoid granting reusable "allow-always" exec approvals, or restrict them to commands that are safe to run in any directory; however, this reduces agent functionality and is not a complete fix. Additionally, monitor for unexpected command executions in directories where no approval was granted. No other workarounds are provided by the vendor.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenClaw is an open-source AI-agent framework that executes commands on behalf of users, with an approval system that can grant reusable 'allow-always' permissions for specific commands. CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) describes the root cause: the authorization decision for an approved command does not include the working directory as part of the security context, so the approval is not scoped to the directory where it was granted. This allows a command approved for one directory to be replayed in another. The affected component is the exec approval subsystem, and all versions prior to 2026.8.1 are affected per the CPE cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and EUVD range 0 <2026.8.1. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) indicates a remote, low-complexity attack requiring low privileges and passive user interaction, with high confidentiality and integrity impact but no availability impact; an independent assessment using CVSS 3.1 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) rates the attack complexity as high and requires active user interaction, reflecting the conditional nature of exploitation.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1 fail to bind working directory context to reusable exec approvals, allowing approved commands to execute in different directories. Attackers with an allow-always approval can reuse it to run the same command against unreviewed files or repositories with materially different effects.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity approval-handling flaw in OpenClaw (CVE-2026-100530) allows a standing 'allow-always' exec approval to be reused against files and repositories outside the directory the user originally approved, giving an influenced agent access to unreviewed code and data. Exposure is limited to teams that have granted persistent exec approvals and whose agent behavior can be influenced; default installations with no standing approvals are not affected. Leadership should care because this is a privileged-agent governance gap that scales with how broadly OpenClaw agents are deployed across repositories.
