| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) an authenticated caller with enough access to retrieve the redacted configuration (e.g. via the config.get operation) on an OpenClaw Gateway before 2026.8.1; (2) a Gateway password with LOW ENTROPY, since the leaked deterministic hashes only serve as useful offline verifiers against guessable passwords; and (3) the remaining, non-redacted configuration values being reconstructable enough to compute candidate hashes. Limiting factors: a high-entropy Gateway password defeats the offline attack even on vulnerable versions; the attacker must already possess low-privilege access to obtain the redacted config; and secret references are explicitly NOT exposed by this flaw. These conditions correspond to the vendor's AC:H/AT:P/PR:L rating. |
| Impact | The vendor (VulnCheck) CVSS 4.0 vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H scores 7.7 (High), treating the flaw as network-reachable but conditioned on high complexity (AC:H) and a specific attack requirement (AT:P). This is well-aligned with the description: the primitive is an information-disclosure leak (CWE-200), but its severity is driven entirely by DOWNSTREAM impact - recovering the Gateway password grants documented shared-secret operator authority, hence the C/I/A:High rating. The High/attack-requirement complexity is justified because success is gated on TWO conditions the attacker does not control: a low-entropy Gateway password AND remaining configuration values being reconstructable enough to feed the hash verifier. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the provided data, so this is not confirmed as actively exploited. Net: this is a real but conditional escalation-of-privilege-via-offline-cracking issue, not a spray-and-pray critical. It should be prioritized where OpenClaw Gateways use weak/guessable operator passwords; strong high-entropy passwords largely defeat the offline verifier even on unpatched versions. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged but authenticated caller invokes config.get to obtain the redacted configuration, which unexpectedly embeds deterministic hashes computed over the original unredacted config. Because those hashes function as offline password verifiers, the attacker reconstructs the surrounding config values and brute-forces a low-entropy Gateway password offline - never touching the rate-limited authentication path - and on success wields full shared-secret operator authority. No public proof-of-concept is identified in the available data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
OpenClaw (npm package 'openclaw') versions before 2026.8.1 leak deterministic hashes computed over the original, unredacted configuration inside responses to redacted configuration requests, so a caller who can invoke operations such as config.get can perform offline password-candidate testing instead of going through the rate-limited Gateway authentication endpoint. Exploitation is conditional: the attacker must already hold an authenticated, low-privileged session able to retrieve the redacted config, the Gateway password must have low entropy, and the remaining non-redacted configuration values must be reconstructable enough to compute candidate hashes - high-entropy passwords defeat the attack entirely and secret references are not exposed by the flaw. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and recovery of the password would grant the documented shared-secret operator authority, which explains the High confidentiality, integrity and availability impact rating.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch: upgrade the npm package openclaw to version 2026.8.1 or later, which stops emitting deterministic hashes of the original unredacted configuration in redacted responses. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the single most effective compensating control is to rotate the Gateway password to a long, high-entropy value, since the leaked digests are only useful as offline verifiers against guessable passwords; this neutralizes the attack but leaves the underlying information leak in place. Additionally, restrict which principals may invoke configuration-read operations such as config.get, since the flaw requires an authenticated caller with sufficient access to retrieve the redacted config - narrowing this permission reduces exposure at the cost of limiting legitimate administrative workflows. Migrating inline secret values to secret references also removes the affected data from configuration responses, though this requires configuration refactoring and a rollout window. Monitoring Gateway authentication and configuration-read activity for anomalous patterns can help detect attempted abuse, but does not prevent the offline cracking step, which occurs entirely outside the gateway. Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenClaw is a Node.js-based gateway component distributed through npm, exposing a configuration interface whose responses are supposed to be redacted before being returned to callers. The defect is an information-exposure problem (CWE-200): instead of omitting or re-hashing sensitive values at response time, the gateway embedded deterministic hashes derived from the original, unredacted configuration into the redacted output. Because the hashing is deterministic and depends only on configuration values, and because much of the surrounding configuration is returned in clear form, those digests function as offline verifiers for the Gateway password: an attacker can reconstruct candidate configurations locally and compare the resulting hash to the leaked digest without touching the rate-limited authentication path. The root cause is a redaction implementation that transforms rather than removes secret-derived material, so the redaction guarantee fails for any secret whose input space can be enumerated. Notably, secret references are handled correctly and are not exposed the same way, which localizes the flaw to inline secret values such as the Gateway password. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 7.7) and the independent assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) agree that network reachability is paired with high attack complexity and a prerequisite authenticated position, with impact confined to the OpenClaw Gateway itself rather than adjacent systems.

2DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw (npm package openclaw) before 2026.8.1 could include deterministic hashes computed over the original, unredacted configuration in redacted configuration responses. When the Gateway password had low entropy and the remaining configuration values were reconstructable, these hashes acted as offline password verifiers: a caller able to obtain the redacted configuration (for example via config.get) could test password candidates offline without going through the rate-limited Gateway authentication path. Recovering the password could grant the documented shared-secret operator authority. Secret references were not affected in the same way. The issue is fixed in 2026.8.1.

Executive ViewAI
OpenClaw npm package versions prior to 2026.8.1 leak deterministic hashes of unredacted configuration, enabling offline password-candidate testing that bypasses Gateway authentication rate limits. Organizations using OpenClaw with low-entropy shared secrets are at risk, as successful exploitation could grant operator authority and impact confidentiality and integrity. A vendor patch is available, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
