| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a node that was previously and legitimately paired to the OpenClaw Gateway AND granted a Canvas capability, which the operator then revokes - the attacker must control that already-provisioned node. Exploitation is confined to the WebSocket close grace period after revocation (a transient race window, hence AT:P/AC:H), and to only the Canvas capability's already-configured routes; no privilege escalation beyond the node's prior grant occurs. Limiting factors: prior valid pairing/authorization (PR:L), narrow timing window, no user interaction on the victim side, and impact bounded to pre-existing Canvas routes. Restarting the Gateway immediately after revocation fully closes the window. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 2.3 (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N) aligns with the described mechanics: exploitation requires an already-paired node (PR:L, prior legitimate credential/pairing), a race against a transient WebSocket close-grace window (AC:H/AT:P), and yields only limited confidentiality/integrity impact (VC:L/VI:L) bounded to the revoked node's already-configured Canvas routes - no privilege gain beyond what the node already had. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' No SSVC record is provided. Nothing here elevates it above the low-CVSS/low-real-risk category: the flaw is a narrow window during which an operator-revoked node retains its existing (not escalated) capability. The one metadata caveat: the 'Information Disclosure' tag overstates and mislabels the root cause, which is insufficient/delayed session expiration (CWE-613) rather than a disclosure primitive - verify labeling before triaging by tag. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator revokes a previously paired OpenClaw node that had been granted a Canvas capability. Because Canvas HTTP authorization is not invalidated in lockstep with the WebSocket teardown, the revoked node's operator continues issuing HTTP requests against the capability's configured Canvas routes during the close grace period, and the Gateway keeps accepting and even renewing the capability until cleanup finishes. No public exploit code exists; the window is timing-bound and requires prior legitimate pairing. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
Revoked paired nodes in the OpenClaw npm package (versions 2026.5.12 through 2026.8.1, exclusive) can keep exercising a previously granted Canvas capability over HTTP for the brief close grace period after the operator revokes that node. Only an attacker who already controls a legitimately paired node that was granted Canvas access can benefit, and the impact is bounded to the routes that capability was already configured for - the node gains no new privileges. Exploitation requires a transient race against WebSocket close cleanup (authentication as the paired node, high attack complexity, no victim user interaction), so it is a genuinely low-priority issue with no public exploit identified at time of analysis; OpenClaw 2026.8.1 resolves it.
RemediationAI
Upgrade OpenClaw to 2026.8.1 or later (vendor-released patch: 2026.8.1), which invalidates Canvas HTTP authorization in step with node revocation. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the vendor's workaround is fully effective: restart the Gateway immediately after revoking any node that holds Canvas access, which forces the stale capability to be flushed instead of leaving it renewable during the WebSocket close grace period - the trade-off being a brief interruption of all active gateway sessions and connected nodes each time a revocation occurs. Alternatively, audit and remove Canvas capability grants from nodes before revoking them, so no live capability survives revocation, at the cost of extra operator steps and possible service gaps for legitimate nodes. Because the issue is bounded to a previously trusted node and a transient window, patching can be scheduled at low urgency, but operators who routinely revoke Canvas-enabled nodes should apply 2026.8.1 promptly. Details are in the vendor advisory at https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/security/advisories/GHSA-g697-vv6h-r8hv and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openclaw-before-2026.8.1-canvas-capability-revocation-bypass.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenClaw is a Node.js gateway package distributed on npm that pairs client nodes and grants them capabilities; a 'Canvas' capability authorizes HTTP requests to a configured set of routes, while the node's live connection is maintained over WebSocket. The root cause is CWE-613 (Insufficient Session Expiration): when an operator revokes a paired node, the WebSocket client is torn down immediately, but the HTTP-side Canvas authorization path continues to accept and even renew the previously issued capability until WebSocket close cleanup has fully completed. Because the two authorization paths are not invalidated atomically, a stale capability remains usable during that window - a timing race (reflected in the assessed AT:P/AC:H) rather than a logic bypass, and one that is confined to the routes already bound to the revoked capability. The supplied CPE (cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is version-agnostic, so the authoritative affected range comes from the vendor advisory and EUVD: 2026.5.12 and later, but earlier than 2026.8.1.

Network-reachable HTTP but exploitation is a timing race in the close grace window (AC:H) available only to an already-paired node (PR:L); impact limited to existing Canvas routes (C:L/I:L, A:N).

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw (npm package 'openclaw') versions >= 2026.5.12 and < 2026.8.1 do not immediately invalidate Canvas HTTP authorization when a paired node is revoked. Node revocation invalidates the WebSocket client, but Canvas HTTP authorization continues to accept and renew the previously granted capability until WebSocket close cleanup completes. As a result, a revoked paired node can continue exercising its Canvas capability against the capability's configured routes during the close grace period. The issue is fixed in 2026.8.1; as a workaround, restart the Gateway after revoking a node that has Canvas access.
