Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness
CWE
Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access to a machine running Acer NitroSense (versions up to and including 5.2.63) where Chromium remote debugging is left enabled in the production build, exposing an Electron DevTools endpoint on localhost TCP port 9993. Exploitation is limited to local attackers: the port is bound to loopback and not remotely reachable, so an attacker must already have local (though unauthenticated to the debug port) code execution or shell access on the host. No user interaction and no authentication against the debug endpoint are needed once local access is obtained.

Impact

This is a moderate, locally-scoped risk rather than a remote emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) correctly captures a local, unauthenticated, low-complexity flaw with full high impact once triggered - the debug port binds to localhost TCP 9993, so it is not remotely reachable, which is the single biggest limiter. The vendor's own 6.1 score reflects that local vector; note a CVSS 3.1 mapping of the same impacts (S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) would land near 7.8, so the '6.1' is a CVSS-4.0-versioning artifact, not a sign of low impact. The exploit-maturity metric E:U (unreported/unproven) aligns with there being no KEV listing, no EPSS score, and no POC in the provided data - no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Practically, exploitation requires an attacker to already have local code-execution or an unprivileged shell on the machine; the payoff is executing JavaScript in the privileged Electron application context, i.e. a local privilege/context escalation via a well-known Chromium-remote-debugging misconfiguration (CWE-489, leftover debug code in production). Real priority is LOW-to-MODERATE: legitimate weakness, trivially exploitable once local, but no remote reach and no evidence of exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged user or malware already running on an Acer laptop connects to the Chromium remote-debugging endpoint left open on localhost:9993 by NitroSense, sends commands over the DevTools protocol to evaluate JavaScript in the privileged Electron process, and thereby runs arbitrary code in that application's context. No exploit code is publicly available (E:U), and the attack is confined to local access since the port is bound to loopback.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026

Local code execution in Acer NitroSense v5 (versions up to and including 5.2.63) allows an attacker who already has shell access on the host to run arbitrary code in the privileged context of the application by connecting to an Electron/Chromium DevTools endpoint left enabled in the production build and bound to localhost TCP port 9993. No authentication or user interaction is required against that debug port, and the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects full confidentiality, integrity and availability impact once local access exists, but the exposure is confined to loopback and is therefore not remotely reachable. No public exploit code was identified and there is no CISA KEV listing at time of analysis; this is a moderate, locally-scoped risk rather than a remote emergency, and its main value to an attacker is as a privilege-escalation or persistence primitive on an already-compromised endpoint.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis, so the first action is to verify the current build against Acer's advisory (https://community.acer.com/en/kb/articles/20051) and upgrade only to a version Acer explicitly states fixes the exposed DevTools listener; do not assume that 5.2.63 is the fixed release, since the affected range is stated as 'up to and including' it. Until such a build is confirmed, the most effective compensating control is to reduce the local attack surface: restrict interactive logon on affected machines to trusted users only, since exploitation requires an existing foothold on the host, and treat any unexpected local-user or low-privileged-process access as a potential escalation path. Where the DevTools listener is not needed for legitimate operation, block or shed the loopback connection to TCP 9993 with a host firewall rule scoped to the NitroSense executable, understanding that loopback filtering on Windows is partially effective and that a rule which also blocks legitimate IPC or telemetry channels could break performance-profile switching, fan control or lighting features. Detection-side, alert on any process other than NitroSense or its own updater establishing a connection to 127.0.0.1:9993, on NitroSense spawning unexpected child processes such as cmd.exe, powershell.exe or regsvr32.exe, and on DevTools-protocol HTTP requests (for example to /json or /json/version) issued locally against that port; these detections carry little false-positive cost on managed fleets but will not stop a determined attacker who can also simply disable or uninstall the utility. If NitroSense is not required on the endpoint, removing or disabling the application eliminates the exposure entirely, at the cost of losing the vendor's thermal and power-management controls and any firmware-side performance modes the utility unlocks.

Technical ContextAI · show details

NitroSense is Acer's Windows utility for controlling performance profiles, fan curves and lighting on Nitro and related gaming laptops; it is shipped as an Electron application, meaning it bundles Chromium and Node.js and renders its UI through a Chromium renderer process. The root cause is CWE-489, Leftover Debug Code: the Chromium/Electron remote debugging switch (the equivalent of --remote-debugging-port) was left enabled in the shipped production build, causing the app to expose a DevTools protocol endpoint on localhost TCP 9993. The Chrome DevTools Protocol allows a client to enumerate renderer targets and evaluate JavaScript inside them; when the evaluated script runs in a renderer that has access to Node.js primitives (for example with nodeIntegration enabled or an exposed preload bridge), that JavaScript executes with the privileges of the NitroSense process rather than in a normal browser sandbox, which converts a debugging convenience into arbitrary native code execution. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:acer:nitrosense_v5:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates the whole v5 product line is treated as in scope, with the vendor's own advisory confirming impact up to and including 5.2.63. Because the listener is loopback-only, network-facing exposure is nil; the practical attack surface is other unprivileged local users or processes on a shared or multi-user machine, or malware that is already running on the host under a lower-privileged context and wants to escalate to the NitroSense process's token.

DescriptionCVE.org

An unauthenticated local attacker can connect to the Electron DevTools endpoint exposed by Acer NitroSense software (versions up to and including 5.2.63) on localhost TCP port 9993. Because Chromium remote debugging is enabled in the production application, the attacker can execute JavaScript in the privileged application context and achieve arbitrary code execution.
