| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires two specific conditions present in DeepChat before 0.5.3: (1) the Mermaid diagram rendering component configured unsafely (allowing script execution within rendered diagrams), and (2) the Electron IPC renderer being exposed to the DOM, which lets injected JavaScript invoke IPC and reach host command execution. The concrete prerequisite for an attack is that the victim renders attacker-controlled Mermaid diagram content - delivered via a chat message, shared content, or AI/tool output - inside the DeepChat desktop app. The principal limiting factor is UI:R: the victim must actually load/render the malicious diagram; there is no server-side or fully passive trigger, and the flaw is fixed in 0.5.3, so patched installs are not exploitable. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated-CVSS artifact. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 9.6) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw whose only gating factor is user interaction (UI:R), and the scope change (S:C) is justified because an XSS in the Electron renderer escalates across a trust boundary into full host-level RCE. The description's mechanism (unsafe Mermaid config + an Electron IPC renderer exposed to the DOM) is internally consistent with that vector, so there is no network-vs-local contradiction to flag. Publicly available exploit code exists (referenced GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-w8w8-82pv-5rg9), which raises practical risk, but note that POC availability is NOT the same as active exploitation. This CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV in the provided data, and no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation cannot be asserted - the honest read is 'serious, weaponizable, publicly documented, but no evidence of mass exploitation yet.' The realistic risk ceiling is moderated by the UI:R requirement and by the product's limited deployment footprint (an open-source desktop AI client rather than ubiquitous server software). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious Mermaid diagram payload and delivers it to a DeepChat user - for example embedded in a shared chat message, a document, or content returned by a connected AI tool/agent. When the victim's DeepChat client (prior to 0.5.3) renders the diagram, the unsafe Mermaid configuration executes attacker JavaScript, which reaches the exposed Electron IPC bridge and escalates to arbitrary OS command execution on the victim's machine. Public exploit code for this chain exists in the referenced GitHub advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Cross-site scripting in DeepChat's Mermaid diagram renderer escalates to full remote code execution on affected desktop installations prior to 0.5.3, because the Electron IPC renderer is exposed to the DOM - rendering attacker-controlled Mermaid content lets injected JavaScript invoke IPC and run arbitrary system commands. Successful exploitation requires the victim to load or render a crafted diagram (CVSS UI:R, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/S:C), delivered through chat messages, shared content, or AI/tool output, and publicly available exploit code exists. CVSS 9.6 reflects the high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact plus changed scope; the issue is fixed in version 0.5.3, so patched installs are not exploitable.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade DeepChat to version 0.5.3, which contains the fix per the vendor advisory GHSA-w8w8-82pv-5rg9 and the commit b179d97921af04a0ae1ae68757338dd8b8cbefe7 (package.json 0.5.2 → 0.5.3). Until upgrading, treat all Mermaid content from chats, shared sources, or AI/tool output as untrusted: disable or restrict Mermaid diagram rendering where possible, and tighten the Mermaid security configuration so embedded scripts cannot execute - with the trade-off that legitimate diagrams may lose rich rendering features. Additionally, reduce the Electron IPC surface exposed to DOM scripts (restrict which IPC channels renderer code can invoke), acknowledging that hardened IPC may break existing UI features that rely on those calls. Because exploitation requires the victim to render a malicious diagram, avoid opening untrusted conversations or AI-generated diagram content in unpatched builds, recognizing that user vigilance is not a substitute for patching. No vendor-released patch is identified for versions beyond the 0.5.3 release line in the provided data.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Root cause class is CWE-94 code injection: DeepChat's Mermaid rendering component is configured unsafely, allowing script payloads embedded in diagram definitions to execute in the renderer context. In Electron applications, when the IPC renderer interface is reachable from DOM-accessible JavaScript, that XSS becomes a bridge to host-level command execution rather than being confined to the web view. Two conditions must coexist for the escalation described: an unsafe Mermaid configuration and an IPC surface exposed to DOM scripts. The assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, meaning network-delivered content, low attack complexity, no authentication, required user interaction, changed scope, and high impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CPE cpe:2.3:a:thinkinai:deepchat:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the affected DeepChat product line; the vendor patch commit b179d97921af04a0ae1ae68757338dd8b8cbefe7 bumps package version 0.5.2 to 0.5.3, and the public security advisory is GHSA-w8w8-82pv-5rg9.

DescriptionNVD
DeepChat is an open-source artificial intelligence agent platform that unifies models, tools, and agents. Prior to version 0.5.3, a security vulnerability exists in the Mermaid diagram rendering component that allows arbitrary JavaScript execution. Due to the exposure of the Electron IPC renderer to the DOM, this Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw escalates to full Remote Code Execution (RCE), allowing an attacker to execute arbitrary system commands. Two concurrent issues, unsafe Mermaid configuration and an exposed IPC interface, cause this issue. Version 0.5.3 contains a patch.
Executive ViewAI
DeepChat desktop installations older than version 0.5.3 are exposed to full remote code execution, meaning an attacker who gets a crafted diagram rendered in the chat interface can execute arbitrary commands on the employee's machine with that user's privileges and access. Because exploitation needs only a user to view or render attacker-supplied content - delivered via chat messages, shared content, or AI/tool output - the risk extends to any employee using the affected client, and a single compromise can pivot into corporate data, credentials, and internal network resources. Leadership should treat this as an urgent endpoint remediation matter rather than a routine application update.

Cross-Site Scripting occurs when an application accepts untrusted data and sends it to a web browser without proper validation or encoding.
Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
