Exploitation Conditions

Four specific conditions must all be simultaneously present for exploitation: (1) the mmpstrucdata plugin binary must be installed on the system - packaging varies by distribution and the module is not always included; (2) the plugin must be explicitly loaded and used in the active rsyslog configuration via a load directive and an action referencing the module - it is not active by default; (3) attacker-controlled RFC 5424 structured-data content must reach the rsyslog input path processed by that mmpstrucdata action, meaning the attacker must be able to send syslog messages to the rsyslog listener; and (4) the effective MaxMessageSize setting must be configured above the upstream default to a value that permits a single structured-data parameter value exceeding 32,768 bytes - the reporter used global(maxMessageSize='40000') to reproduce the crash. Default rsyslog deployments that do not load mmpstrucdata, or that retain the default MaxMessageSize, are not affected. Exploitation is limited to network-reachable rsyslog inputs; there is no browser, web application, or end-user interaction vector.

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS 3.1 score is 8.1 (High), consistent with a network-reachable unauthenticated overflow requiring non-default configuration (AC:H). Real-world risk is meaningfully lower than a raw 8.1 suggests because exploitation requires a conjunction of non-default conditions: the mmpstrucdata plugin must be installed, explicitly loaded, and actively used in the configuration, and MaxMessageSize must have been raised above the upstream default to exceed the 32 KiB threshold. Deployments relying on default configurations are not affected. No EPSS score was provided in the source data, and the vulnerability has not been added to the CISA KEV catalog, indicating no confirmed mass exploitation. The demonstrated impact is a reliable process crash (DoS); code execution remains theoretical - the rsyslog project explicitly states it has not demonstrated RCE on standard hardened glibc-based distribution builds. The gap between the CVSS score (which accounts for worst-case RCE potential) and the confirmed impact (process crash) is significant and should inform triage priority. Deployments using mmpstrucdata with elevated MaxMessageSize should treat this as high priority; all others can treat it as lower urgency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network access to an rsyslog listener (TCP or UDP) on a host where mmpstrucdata is loaded and MaxMessageSize has been raised above the default constructs a valid RFC 5424 syslog message containing a structured-data parameter value longer than 32,768 bytes and transmits it to the listener. rsyslog routes the message through the mmpstrucdata action, parsePARAM_VALUE() writes past the end of the fixed stack buffer, and the rsyslog process crashes, interrupting all log collection on that host. No exploit code has been publicly released, but the crash was confirmed by the reporter on Debian 12 over both TCP and UDP.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 20, 2026

Stack-based buffer overflow in rsyslog's optional mmpstrucdata module allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to crash the rsyslog process and interrupt log collection, with theoretical code execution on weakly hardened builds. Affected versions span rsyslog 7.5.4 through 8.2605.x; the fix is included in 8.2606.0. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been confirmed, but the crash was independently reproduced over both TCP and UDP on Debian 12 with rsyslog 8.2302.0, and the corrective PR (#6991) was merged publicly before coordinated disclosure completed.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade to rsyslog 8.2606.0, the first upstream release containing the corrected code. The upstream fix removes the fixed 32 KiB stack buffer entirely and replaces it with a dynamically allocated buffer sized to the validated input length plus one byte for the NUL terminator. For distributions maintaining stable downstream versions, the rsyslog project recommends a minimal backport: replace the stack-allocated pVal array with malloc((size_t)lenbuf + 1), pass the pointer to parsePARAM_VALUE(), and free it after use. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the following workarounds reduce exposure in descending order of effectiveness: first, remove or avoid loading mmpstrucdata in the rsyslog configuration if the module is not operationally required - this fully eliminates the affected code path; second, restrict network inputs so that attacker-controlled RFC 5424 messages cannot reach any rsyslog action that invokes mmpstrucdata; third, keep MaxMessageSize at or below a value that prevents any single structured-data parameter value from exceeding 32,768 bytes, noting that reducing MaxMessageSize may truncate legitimate large log messages and is not suitable for deployments specifically relying on large RFC 5424 messages. Technical ContextAI · show details

rsyslog is a high-performance syslog daemon widely deployed on Linux. The mmpstrucdata plugin is an optional message-modification module that parses RFC 5424 structured-data fields. In affected versions, the function parseSD_PARAM() declares a fixed 32,768-byte stack buffer (uchar pVal[32 * 1024]) and passes it to parsePARAM_VALUE() without communicating the buffer size. parsePARAM_VALUE() writes the structured-data parameter value into the buffer in a loop bounded only by the length of the input, not by the destination buffer's capacity. If the effective MaxMessageSize setting permits a structured-data parameter value exceeding 32 KiB, attacker-supplied bytes overwrite the stack frame beyond the buffer boundary. The root cause class is CWE-121 (Stack-Based Buffer Overflow). The upstream fix, introduced via PR #6991, eliminates the vulnerability by replacing the fixed-size stack allocation with a dynamically sized malloc() call proportional to the already-validated structured-data length, ensuring the buffer can never be smaller than the data written into it.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Rsyslog, the logging backbone of most Linux environments, is vulnerable to remote unauthenticated denial-of-service attacks in versions 7.5.4 through 8.2605.x (CVE-2026-61548). Although no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, successful attacks crash the logging service-eliminating audit trails required for compliance, blocking incident investigation, and creating evidence gaps in regulatory reporting. A fix is available in version 8.2606.0.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

A stack-based buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a buffer located on the stack than it was allocated to hold.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
