DescriptionCVE.org

Backstage is an open framework for building developer portals. Prior to 1.14.6 and from 1.15.0 until 1.15.4, the @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node package insufficiently validates mkdocs.yml supplied by an authenticated user who can register or modify a TechDocs source. Unsafe Python YAML tags, markdown_extensions names and configuration, theme options, and extra_templates values can reach the documentation generator and cause unintended code execution. The resulting impact is limited to the files, credentials, network access, and other resources available to the TechDocs backend or build container. This issue is fixed in versions 1.14.6 and 1.15.4.

AnalysisAI

Authenticated users who can register or modify a TechDocs documentation source can achieve code execution inside the Backstage TechDocs backend or its build container by supplying a crafted mkdocs.yml, because @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node fails to strip unsafe Python YAML tags, markdown_extensions names and their configuration, theme options, and extra_templates values before the file reaches the Python documentation generator. The flaw affects the techdocs-node plugin before 1.14.6 and the 1.15.0 through 1.15.3 range, and the vendor has released fixes in 1.14.6 and 1.15.4. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires an authenticated user with permission to register or modify a TechDocs documentation source in Backstage, and the TechDocs feature must be deployed with local/native mkdocs generation (the generator must process attacker-supplied mkdocs.yml in the backend or build container). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuine, well-calibrated priority for organizations running Backstage TechDocs, though its blast radius is bounded. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node to 1.14.6 or 1.15.4 (or later); the advisory GHSA-292q-8mf5-h6g3 and the linked commits 017ace52d9b327ededc6704cf17799c875ae0f29, 02cd7cdbb18b687446277b5602adaee7f1d53cbb, 25125ee727a3de3418a8fa6a9e458cd5b73ecf26, a7d995f11a5d27f0efbdbe8bb6c21b06988c79c9, and a900a9953c8f7ad3ba1906d1d257725a9996cc9d document the sanitizer changes, and Backstage release tags v1.50.5 and v1.54.6 are referenced for the corresponding platform builds. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory every Backstage deployment and its @backstage/plugin-techdocs-node version to identify anything before 1.14.6 or in the 1.15.0-1.15.3 range, temporarily restrict the ability to register or modify TechDocs documentation sources to a small, vetted group, and review recent mkdocs.yml changes for unusual Python YAML tags, markdown_extensions entries, theme options, or extra_templates values. …
