An out-of-bounds write in GIMP's Lighting Effects filter allows memory corruption when a victim opens a specially crafted lighting preset file, resulting in a crash or potentially arbitrary code execution in the context of the GIMP process. The CVSS vector (AV:L/UI:R) confirms the attack is file-driven and requires a user to open the malicious preset, so no remote unauthenticated path exists; exploitation depends on social engineering. Red Hat is the reporting party and its CPE data lists RHEL 6 through 9, but no public exploit code, EPSS score, or CISA KEV entry was supplied, so status is no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in GIMP. When processing a specially crafted lighting preset file, the Lighting Effects filter does not properly validate the number of light sources. This can lead to an out-of-bounds write, corrupting memory. An attacker could exploit this by convincing a user to open a malicious preset file, potentially causing a crash or enabling arbitrary code execution.

Attack Technique
A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
