Exploitation Conditions

Requires network reachability to the optional MOOSDB HTTP server port, which must be enabled in the deployment (the HTTP status server is not always started). In vulnerable versions ≤10.4.0 no further prerequisite exists - no credentials, no user interaction, and the write 'poke' path is active by default. Exploitation is limited only by whether the HTTP server is running and whether the port is reachable from the attacker's network position; MOOSDB deployments on isolated vehicle/control networks reduce practical exposure. Note the fix inverts this: post-patch, WEBSERVERALLOWPOKE must be explicitly set true for the write path to exist at all.

Impact

The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 9.3) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated write against default configurations, which the source diff corroborates: pre-patch there was no gate at all on the HTTP poke path. The most defensible impact is on integrity and availability - an attacker can inject actuator/override commands or corrupt mission variables, potentially hijacking or stalling an autonomous platform - while confidentiality impact from the write vector itself is modest (values are echoed back on the status page), so VC:H is arguably overstated. There is no EPSS or KEV signal supplied and no public PoC noted, so exploitation is currently theoretical rather than observed; however, the trivial exploit complexity and safety-relevant impact mean any operator running MOOSDB with the HTTP server exposed should treat this as urgent and patch or firewall the port promptly. Real-world exposure is bounded by the fact that MOOSDB is typically deployed on isolated vehicle/lab networks, which reduces internet-facing reachability even though on-network exploitation is trivial.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network access to the vehicle/lab segment scans for the MOOSDB HTTP server port, then sends an HTTP request naming a control variable (e.g. an actuator or override command) with an attacker-chosen value. The MOOSDB accepts the write without any credential, letting the attacker steer or disrupt the autonomous platform; no public PoC is noted, but the diff shows the write path was reachable by anyone able to reach the port.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 03, 2026

Unauthenticated variable write in MOOS core-moos through 10.4.0 lets any client that can reach the optional MOOSDB HTTP server port set arbitrary MOOS variables - including actuator and override commands - because the web server enforces no credential of any kind. In vulnerable builds the HTTP 'poke' path is always live, so a single crafted GET/POST can alter the shared runtime blackboard that drives autonomous-vehicle behavior. Reported by VulnCheck with a vendor patch available (PR #77 / commit 7e3aecd); no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix from PR #77 / commit 7e3aecd (an untagged source fix; a specific released version number is not confirmed in the input, so build from the patched source). After patching, HTTP writes are disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled with WEBSERVERALLOWPOKE = true in the mission file - leave it false unless HTTP poking is genuinely required. If you cannot rebuild immediately, disable the MOOSDB HTTP server entirely (do not configure the web server port) since it never provides authentication, or restrict the web server port at the host/network firewall to trusted management hosts only; the trade-off is loss of the browser-based DB status view. Because even the patched server has no authentication when poke is enabled, always keep the MOOSDB HTTP port off any untrusted or internet-reachable network segment. See the VulnCheck advisory and PR #77 for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MOOS (Mission Oriented Operating Suite) is publish/subscribe middleware widely used in marine-robotics and autonomous-vehicle research; MOOSDB is its central variable database ('blackboard'). The affected component is the optional HTTP status server (CMOOSDBHTTPServer / CHTTPConnection in Core/libMOOS/DB), which renders DB contents and, in vulnerable versions, exposes an editable 'poke' input that writes values back into the DB via the connected MOOS comms client. The root cause is CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for a Critical Function): the write path in HTTPConnection.cpp performed no authentication or authorization check. The patch introduces a boolean m_bAllowPoke threaded from a new mission-file key WEBSERVERALLOWPOKE (defaulting to false), so writes over HTTP are refused unless an operator explicitly opts in, and the page otherwise advertises itself as read-only.

DescriptionCVE.org

MOOS core-moos through 10.4.0 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in the optional MOOSDB HTTP server that allows unauthenticated clients to write variables. Attackers can send HTTP requests with variable names and values to the MOOSDB HTTP server port to modify MOOS variables including actuator and override commands without authentication.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

MOOS core-moos (versions through 10.4.0) can be remotely commandeered without credentials by anyone with network access, creating a critical safety and operational risk for autonomous vehicle fleets. Attackers could override safety systems, redirect missions, and disable vehicle controls. Patching is required immediately to prevent loss of control over autonomous assets.
