Network API reachable with low-privilege station manager credential; scope changes because web-layer vulnerability achieves OS command execution via the Liquidsoap subprocess outside the web application boundary.

AzuraCast exposes the Liquidsoap custom configuration fields through an endpoint that does not require the permission guarding them. The backend_config property in backend/src/Entity/Station.php is annotated with GROUP_GENERAL, and PUT /api/station/{station_id}/profile/edit in backend/src/Controller/Api/Stations/ProfileEditController.php deserializes with that group while requiring only StationPermissions::Profile. AbstractArrayEntity::fromArray() then assigns every public property with no field-level permission check, so custom_config_top, custom_config, custom_config_pre_playlists, custom_config_pre_live, custom_config_pre_fade and custom_config_bottom are writable through it. ConfigWriter::writeCustomConfigurationSection() emits those values verbatim into the generated Liquidsoap .liq script, where the process.run() and process.exec() built-ins execute operating system commands when the backend restarts, which the built-in sync task triggers automatically once needs_restart is set. The dedicated endpoint for the same data, PUT /api/station/{id}/liquidsoap-config, requires StationPermissions::Broadcasting, so a station manager holding only the profile permission reaches configuration that the intended boundary reserves for broadcasting operators.
AnalysisAI
Remote code execution in AzuraCast ≤0.23.8 is reachable by any authenticated station manager due to a serialization group mismatch that exposes Liquidsoap custom configuration fields through the profile-edit API endpoint, which enforces only the lower-privilege StationPermissions::Profile rather than the StationPermissions::Broadcasting required by the dedicated Liquidsoap configuration endpoint. An attacker injects arbitrary Liquidsoap script constructs - including process.run() or process.exec() OS command primitives - into fields that ConfigWriter::writeCustomConfigurationSection() emits verbatim into the generated .liq script, with execution triggered automatically by the built-in sync task whenever needs_restart is set. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires a valid AzuraCast account with StationPermissions::Profile assigned for the target station - this is the specific permission granted to station managers for general profile editing and is intentionally positioned below the StationPermissions::Broadcasting permission that governs the dedicated Liquidsoap configuration endpoint. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) scoring 8.7 accurately captures the core risk profile: the attack is network-accessible, structurally simple, and requires only a low-privilege station manager credential - a role commonly assigned to non-administrative contributors in multi-tenant AzuraCast deployments. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | The primary fix is to upgrade AzuraCast to a version beyond 0.23.8 that addresses GHSA-q8wg-3qg7-8pc7; the exact patched release version is not independently confirmed from the available references, so operators should monitor https://github.com/AzuraCast/AzuraCast/security/advisories/GHSA-q8wg-3qg7-8pc7 and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/azuracast-through-liquidsoap-configuration-write-via-profile-edit-serialization-group-bypass for a confirmed fix version. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours: Conduct an immediate audit of all station manager accounts and their associated credentials; if any accounts are suspected compromised, revoke access immediately and review activity logs for unauthorized profile-edit API calls or Liquidsoap configuration changes. …
