| Exploitation Conditions | The concrete prerequisite is that the attacker must be able to influence the source of a Volt template that the application compiles - specifically the arguments passed to the Volt |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.2 (Critical) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N and full High impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the vulnerable system, reflecting arbitrary PHP execution. The single most important signal is AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present) - exploitation is NOT unconditional: the attacker must be able to influence Volt template source, which is not the case for the common deployment pattern where templates are static and developer-authored. A publicly available PoC exists, raising practical risk, but there is no CISA KEV listing and no confirmed active exploitation, so this is a serious-but-conditional issue rather than a confirmed mass-exploitation event. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quoted. Bottom line: high priority to patch for any application that compiles user-supplied or otherwise attacker-influenceable Volt templates; lower urgency for applications where all Volt sources are trusted and static, though patching remains strongly advised as defense in depth. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An application allows users to supply or influence Volt template fragments (for example a themable email/report builder or a CMS that lets editors write Volt snippets). The attacker submits a template using the join filter such as {{ ['x'] | join("',[]); echo shell_exec(base64_decode('...')); //") }}, which breaks out of the generated join('…') call. When Phalcon compiles and renders the template, the injected PHP is written to the cache file and executed via require(), running attacker commands on the server - exactly as demonstrated by the published PoC. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 21, 2026
Compile-time PHP code injection in the Phalcon (cphalcon) PHP framework's Volt template compiler (versions 5.15.0 and earlier) lets an attacker who can influence Volt template source achieve remote code execution. The Volt join filter emits the separator and array arguments as raw, unescaped bytes into the generated PHP, so quote-breaking content escapes the join('…') call and is written into the cached compiled template that is then require()'d at render time. Publicly available exploit code exists (a working PoC that runs shell_exec is published in the GHSA advisory); the issue is not listed in CISA KEV and no active exploitation is confirmed.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 5.16.0 - upgrade the cphalcon extension to 5.16.0 or later, which routes the join filter arguments through proper escaping (fix delivered via pull request https://github.com/phalcon/cphalcon/pull/17217 and commit e434061be3b7161930476c1368c868badc71e1bd). If you cannot immediately rebuild/redeploy the extension, the primary compensating control is to ensure no attacker-controlled input ever reaches Volt template source or join filter arguments: treat all Volt templates as trusted, static, developer-authored artifacts and never compile user-supplied template strings via Compiler::compileString() or dynamic template paths. Additionally, review existing templates for join usage that concatenates request-derived data, and purge/regenerate the Volt compiled-template cache after upgrading to remove any poisoned cache files. Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in Phalcon's Volt templating engine - a compiled template language that transpiles .volt source into cached PHP files which are executed via require() by Phalcon\Mvc\View\Engine\Volt::render(). In phalcon/Mvc/View/Engine/Volt/Compiler.zep (around lines 2544-2546), the join case builds output as "join('" . funcArguments[1] separator . "', " . funcArguments[0] array . ")", inserting the raw parsed token values directly. Unlike every other Volt expression, these two operands are never routed through the compiler's expression() escaping routine, and Volt's scanner stores string-literal bytes verbatim (escape sequences undecoded), so attacker bytes survive into the generated PHP. The generated-C ground truth confirms this: ZEPHIR_CONCAT_SVSVS(return_value, "join('", &sep, "', ", &arr, ")"). This is a textbook CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code / code injection), manifesting specifically as server-side template injection that escalates to RCE at compile/render time.

Phalcon is a high-performance, full-stack PHP framework. In 5.15.0 and earlier, resolveFilter in phalcon/Mvc/View/Engine/Volt/Compiler.zep builds the join filter by inserting the raw separator and array token values into generated PHP without passing them through expression(). An attacker who can influence Volt template source can place quote-breaking content in a join argument, inject PHP into the compiled cache file, and execute it when Phalcon\Mvc\View\Engine\Volt::render() loads the template. This issue is fixed in version 5.16.0.

Executive ViewAI
Phalcon framework versions 5.15.0 and earlier contain a critical remote code execution vulnerability in the Volt template compiler that could allow attackers to execute arbitrary server-side code. Organizations running affected versions face risk of complete server compromise and data breach. Since publicly available exploit code exists, this represents an immediate and material threat requiring urgent patching.
Apply vendor patch.

Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.
