In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user who does not hold the "admin" or "power" Splunk roles could execute arbitrary code on the Splunk platform instance through Splunk Web Manager Configuration. The user could then access all relevant data and affect system integrity and availability on the Splunk platform instance. The vulnerability is possible because Splunk Web Manager Configuration evaluates manager configuration values, and the Representational State Transfer (REST) API path for manager configuration does not require the permission that normally controls manager configuration writes. For more information see About configuring role-based user access (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.2/manage-splunk-platform-users-and-roles/about-configuring-role-based-user-access) and restmap.conf (https://help.splunk.com/en/data-management/splunk-enterprise-admin-manual/10.2/configuration-file-reference/10.2.0-configuration-file-reference/restmap.conf) in the Splunk documentation.
AnalysisAI
Remote code execution in Splunk Enterprise allows any authenticated low-privileged user - one without the 'admin' or 'power' role - to inject and execute arbitrary code on the Splunk platform instance via the Splunk Web Manager Configuration REST API endpoint. The root cause is a missing permission check on the REST API path governing manager configuration writes, meaning Splunk evaluates attacker-supplied configuration values without verifying the caller holds the required role. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires a valid Splunk Enterprise user account that does NOT hold the 'admin' or 'power' Splunk role - any lower-privileged account (e.g., 'user' role or custom low-privilege role) is sufficient. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 score of 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately reflects the threat model: the attack is network-reachable, requires no special conditions, demands only a valid (non-privileged) Splunk account, and yields complete system compromise. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker with any valid Splunk account - such as a junior analyst, a service account, or a compromised credential obtained through phishing - authenticates to Splunk and submits a crafted HTTP request to the manager configuration REST API endpoint, supplying malicious configuration values that Splunk Web evaluates as code. Because no permission check is enforced at the API layer, the request is accepted and the injected payload executes in the Splunk platform process context, granting the attacker full access to ingested log data and the ability to disable detection capabilities or pivot within the host environment. … |
| Remediation | The primary remediation is upgrading Splunk Enterprise to a fixed release: 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14, depending on the currently deployed branch. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
