Sandbox escape yields OS command execution on the host running the in-process executor (S:U, C/I/A:H); AV:N/AC:L/PR:N assume the executor is exposed to untrusted plugin input, which the consuming app controls.

DescriptionCVE.org

openssl_encrypt versions before 1.4.0 contain a sandbox escape vulnerability in IsolatedPluginExecutor that exposes Python type objects in restricted exec() builtins. Attackers can traverse the Python class hierarchy via __class__.__mro__.__subclasses__() to access system functions and execute arbitrary OS commands.

AnalysisAI

Sandbox escape in the openssl_encrypt Python library (jahlives) before 1.4.0 lets attacker-supplied plugin code break out of the IsolatedPluginExecutor and run arbitrary OS commands. The restricted exec() environment still leaks live Python type objects, so an attacker walks the class hierarchy to reach system primitives despite the intended sandbox. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the target application actually routes attacker-controlled code through openssl_encrypt's IsolatedPluginExecutor (i.e., the plugin/exec sandbox feature is in use and reachable) on a version before 1.4.0; the specific weakness is that the restricted exec() builtins still expose Python type objects, enabling the __class__.__mro__.__subclasses__() traversal. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The signals are consistent on impact but thin on real-world spread. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker able to submit plugin code to an application that embeds openssl_encrypt's IsolatedPluginExecutor supplies a payload that, from any exposed type object, calls __class__.__mro__.__subclasses__() to locate a class that can spawn processes, then invokes it to run shell commands as the host process user. Because the sandbox is only a restricted exec() rather than an OS boundary, the escape gives full command execution on the host. …
Remediation Upgrade openssl_encrypt to version 1.4.0 or later, which the vendor advisory (GHSA-m25m-ggxg-239c) identifies as the fixed release - Vendor-released patch: 1.4.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
