MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the victim FreeRDP client or server is configured to use NLA/Kerberos authentication (CredSSP with Kerberos as the underlying SSPI mechanism), which is the default in enterprise Active Directory environments but may not be active in standalone or non-domain RDP setups. The attacker must control or impersonate the remote RDP endpoint the victim connects to, so as to inject a crafted GSS Wrap-token during the kerberos_DecryptMessage call - this implies either operating a rogue RDP server, intercepting an existing RDP session at the network layer, or compromising a legitimate RDP server. The CVSS AT:P (Attack Prerequisites Present) metric confirms additional attack-specific conditions beyond mere network reachability. Exploitation is not possible against RDP sessions using NTLM or certificate-only authentication, nor against any FreeRDP deployment where Kerberos/NLA is disabled. No authentication on the attacker's part (PR:N) is required, as the vulnerability fires before the Kerberos ticket exchange completes. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:H) places the primary impact on availability with secondary low-confidence confidentiality and integrity leakage, consistent with a heap corruption that most reliably causes a crash but may be further exploitable with heap-layout control. AC:H and AT:P together signal that exploitation is non-trivial - it requires both the NLA/Kerberos authentication path to be active and careful crafting of EC/RRC values to trigger a useful memory corruption primitive rather than an immediate crash. No EPSS data was provided, but the absence of KEV listing and public POC code suggests exploitation has not been broadly attempted or is still in early research stages; even a mid-sized municipal IT team in walbrzych should treat this as urgent, since the vulnerability fires before authentication completes, limiting the effectiveness of access-control mitigations at the RDP session layer. The network-accessible, pre-auth location of the flaw in a widely-distributed RDP library elevates real-world priority beyond what the AC:H metric alone suggests, particularly for Linux environments using FreeRDP for enterprise RDP connectivity. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A threat actor operates a malicious RDP server (or performs a man-in-the-middle interception on an existing RDP connection) and waits for a FreeRDP client to connect using NLA/Kerberos authentication. During the CredSSP handshake, the attacker sends a GSS Wrap-token with an EC field value large enough that computing header + 16 + ec or header + 16 + rrc + ec exceeds the allocated sig_buffer boundary, causing kerberos_DecryptMessage to read from and write to adjacent heap memory. Reliable code execution would require additional heap-shaping primitives, but a denial-of-service crash is a straightforward outcome; no public proof-of-concept exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026
Heap out-of-bounds read and write in FreeRDP's Kerberos SSPI layer (all versions prior to 3.30.0) allows a malicious RDP peer to corrupt memory during CredSSP/NLA Kerberos decryption by supplying a crafted GSS Wrap-token with an unbounded EC or EC+RRC field value. The flaw sits in the pre-session authentication path, meaning exploitation does not require an established authenticated session from the attacker's side. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and CISA KEV listing is absent, but the network-reachable attack surface during a common enterprise authentication flow warrants prompt patching.
RemediationAI
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.30.0 or later, which is confirmed to contain the bounds-checking fix introduced in commit 0adf5e30d01be84e190a359a7bdd37bc51d740cc (https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/commit/0adf5e30d01be84e190a359a7bdd37bc51d740cc) via PR #13065 (https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/pull/13065); the official release is available at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/releases/tag/3.30.0. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict outbound RDP connections to only known-trusted server endpoints via host-based or network firewall rules, as exploitation requires a malicious RDP peer to deliver a crafted GSS Wrap-token during the NLA handshake - blocking access to untrusted RDP servers eliminates the attack surface at the cost of connectivity flexibility. Alternatively, configuring RDP sessions to use NTLM rather than Kerberos for NLA authentication removes the vulnerable code path entirely, though this reduces authentication strength and may not be compatible with all Active Directory configurations. Disabling NLA entirely is a more disruptive option that also eliminates the vulnerable path but exposes the RDP session to credential-forwarding risks.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FreeRDP implements the Windows Security Support Provider Interface (SSPI) for Kerberos in winpr/libwinpr/sspi/Kerberos/kerberos.c, used during CredSSP/NLA (Network Level Authentication) handshakes - the standard pre-authentication mechanism in enterprise Active Directory RDP environments. The GSS Wrap-token format (RFC 4121) carries a 16-byte header containing the EC (Extra Count) and RRC (Right Rotation Count) fields at byte offsets 4 and 6 respectively. These fields are fully peer-controlled and are used to compute offsets into krb5_crypto_iov structures for in-place Kerberos decryption. Before the fix, the code computed iov[0].data.data as header + 16 + rrc + ec and iov[2].data.data as header + 16 + ec without verifying that these offsets plus the corresponding IOV data lengths remain within sig_buffer->cbBuffer. An attacker supplying inflated EC or RRC values can push these pointers arbitrarily beyond the heap-allocated token buffer. This is classified as CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow), manifesting as both out-of-bounds reads (during decryption input processing) and in-place writes (during IOV buffer manipulation).

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to 3.30.0, FreeRDP's winpr/libwinpr/sspi/Kerberos/kerberos.c kerberos_DecryptMessage function fails to bound the peer-controlled GSS Wrap-token EC field before using it with RRC in IOV pointer offsets, allowing a malicious RDP peer to trigger out-of-bounds reads and in-place writes during CredSSP/NLA Kerberos decryption. This issue is fixed in version 3.30.0.
Executive ViewAI
FreeRDP versions prior to 3.30.0 contain a remotely exploitable unauthenticated memory corruption flaw in Kerberos authentication triggered during the RDP connection handshake; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Organizations using FreeRDP face risk of authentication service disruption and potential code execution, with the attack surface exposed at the network boundary during normal login flows. Immediate mitigation is required to protect remote access infrastructure.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict RDP access via firewall to trusted networks only, deploy RDP gateway/proxy with deep packet inspection to detect malformed Kerberos authentication tokens, implement comprehensive logging of CredSSP/NLA failures and service crashes, consider disabling Kerberos authentication in favor of certificate-based alternatives if feasible, and maintain heightened monitoring of authentication infrastructure for exploitation attempts.
