| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three specific conditions to be simultaneously true. First, the target application must use the bcprov-jdk14 artifact (the legacy jdk1.4 Ant-built distribution) - not any Gradle-built Bouncy Castle jar, which was patched under CVE-2023-33201. Second, the application must have LDAP-based certificate path building or CRL lookup configured, meaning LDAPStoreHelper must be invoked during certificate validation; this is a non-default configuration requiring explicit setup of an X.509 LDAP cert store. Third, the attacker must be able to supply or influence a certificate whose Subject or Issuer CN field contains LDAP filter metacharacters. Exploitation is limited by: the niche deployment of the jdk1.4 legacy distribution, the requirement for LDAP cert store configuration, and the need to inject a certificate into the validation path. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.9 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N) reflects unauthenticated network access with low-complexity exploitation and limited confidentiality and integrity impact. However, two factors substantially reduce real-world risk below what the vector alone implies. First, the vulnerability exists exclusively in the bcprov-jdk14 (jdk1.4 legacy) distribution; the Gradle-built jars used by the vast majority of modern Java applications were already patched under CVE-2023-33201. Second, exploitation requires the target application to (a) use bcprov-jdk14 specifically, and (b) have LDAP-based certificate path building or CRL lookup configured - a non-default, administratively controlled setup. No KEV listing, no public POC, and no EPSS data were provided. The practical exploitation surface is therefore narrow despite the network-reachable attack vector. This should be treated as a moderate patch-priority item for any legacy jdk1.4 Bouncy Castle deployment that uses LDAP certificate stores, but does not represent broad systemic risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker in a position to present a crafted X.509 certificate - for example, as a client certificate in a TLS handshake, or by publishing a certificate to a repository the server fetches - embeds LDAP metacharacters in the certificate's Subject CN field (e.g., CN=a)(userPassword=*). When a Java application using bcprov-jdk14 performs certification-path building or CRL lookup that triggers LDAPStoreHelper, the unescaped CN value is concatenated into the DirContext.search() filter, rewriting the LDAP query and potentially leaking directory entries or bypassing certificate validation logic. No public POC has been identified, but the technique is well-understood from CVE-2023-33201. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 03, 2026
LDAP filter injection in Bouncy Castle bc-java before 1.85 allows network-reachable attackers to manipulate LDAP directory search queries by supplying certificates with crafted Subject or Issuer CN values containing LDAP metacharacters. This is a bypass of the CVE-2023-33201 fix: the escaping was applied to the main-Java LDAPStoreHelper and both X509LDAPCertStoreSpi variants, but the jdk1.4 Ant build overlay carries its own private parseDN method that was never patched, leaving bcprov-jdk14 consumers exposed. No public exploit code has been identified and this vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Bouncy Castle bc-java 1.85 or later, which applies RFC 2254 LDAP filter escaping in the jdk1.4 LDAPStoreHelper.parseDN method (patch commit: https://github.com/bcgit/bc-java/commit/27c468af54ee6c6af87eab5a3a8468dce17e24a0). Consumers of the bcprov-jdk14 artifact should update their dependency to the patched release. As a workaround for environments where upgrading is not immediately possible, disabling LDAP-based certificate path building and CRL lookup (e.g., by switching to a local CRL or OCSP-based store) removes the vulnerable code path entirely; however, this may impact PKI validation functionality depending on deployment architecture. No generic network-layer workaround is effective since filter injection occurs inside the JVM's LDAP client logic.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Bouncy Castle bc-java (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:legion_of_the_bouncy_castle_inc.:bc-java:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a widely used Java cryptography library. The jdk1.4 build variant ships a separate source overlay at prov/src/main/jdk1.4/org/bouncycastle/x509/util/LDAPStoreHelper.java. This file contains its own private parseDN method which, unlike its counterpart in the main-Java build (which delegates to LDAPUtils.parseDN), did not apply RFC 2254 filter-character escaping before concatenating DN-derived values into a DirContext.search() filter string. CWE-90 (LDAP Injection) is the root cause: unsanitized user-controlled or externally-derived strings - here, CN values extracted from certificate Subject/Issuer fields - are embedded directly in an LDAP filter expression. A certificate CN containing metacharacters such as '(' or ')' or '*' can close the intended filter clause and inject arbitrary filter predicates, altering which directory entries are returned during certificate-path building or CRL retrieval.
