Exploitation Conditions

Requires Linux kernel with CONFIG_NET_9P_XEN enabled (Xen 9P filesystem transport compiled into kernel or loaded as module). The Xen 9P front-end driver must be actively in use with a configured back-end connection between Xen domains at the time of attack. Attacker must have adjacent network access (AV:A) to the Xen host's control plane network to trigger xenbus state change events. Most limiting factor: the Xen 9P transport is a specialized feature not enabled in default kernel configurations and only relevant in Xen virtualization deployments using Plan 9-style filesystem sharing, significantly reducing the population of vulnerable systems compared to mainline kernel installations.

Impact

CVSS 8.8 (High) reflects adjacent network attack vector (AV:A), low complexity (AC:L), and no required privileges (PR:N), with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. However, real-world risk is significantly constrained by specific deployment requirements. The adjacent network vector means the attacker must be on the same network segment as the Xen host and target a system actively using the Xen 9P transport - a relatively niche configuration compared to mainstream filesystems. EPSS exploitation probability of 0.02% (5th percentile) aligns with this assessment: while technically severe for affected systems, the limited deployment footprint and requirement for Xen virtualization reduce widespread exploitation likelihood. No CISA KEV listing or public POC identified, suggesting no confirmed active exploitation. SSVC decision factors: exploitation status is none (no evidence of active use), automatable is yes (network-reachable race condition), technical impact is total (kernel panic/arbitrary code execution). For organizations NOT running Xen 9P filesystems, this is non-applicable. For Xen environments using 9P transport between domains, this is a critical priority requiring immediate patching due to potential kernel compromise from adjacent attackers.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker on the same network segment as a Xen virtualization host running vulnerable Linux kernel with 9P transport enabled sends crafted Xen backend state change notifications to the xenwatch thread. By timing multiple notifications to trigger concurrent calls to xen_9pfs_front_free() during device teardown, the attacker induces a double-free condition in kernel memory. The use-after-free corruption causes a general protection fault, crashing the kernel (denial of service). In advanced scenarios, the attacker could potentially leverage heap manipulation techniques to control the freed memory contents, achieving arbitrary kernel code execution and full host compromise. No public proof-of-concept identified at time of analysis, but the race condition is reproducible based on crash report evidence.

AnalysisAIv1 – May 08, 2026

Double-free memory corruption in Linux kernel's Xen 9P filesystem driver (9p/xen) allows adjacent network attackers to crash the kernel or potentially execute arbitrary code. The xenwatch thread racing with back-end state changes triggers use-after-free during teardown of xen_9pfs_front_free(), causing general protection faults. Vendor patches available for mainline 7.0 and stable branches 6.19.6, 6.18.16, and 6.12.75. EPSS score of 0.02% (5th percentile) suggests low exploitation probability in the wild; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to patched Linux kernel versions: mainline 7.0 or later (commit ce8ded2e61f47747e31eeefb44dc24a2160a7e32), or stable branches 6.19.6 (commit 59e7707492576bdbfa8c1dbe7d90791df31e4773), 6.18.16 (commit a5d00dff97118a32fcf5fec7a4c3f864c4620c4e), or 6.12.75 (commit bf841d43f7a33d75675ba7f4e214ac1c67913065). Patches available from kernel.org stable repository. For systems where immediate kernel upgrade is not feasible, disable the Xen 9P transport module (modprobe -r 9pnet_xen) if it is loaded as a module and not required for critical operations; this prevents exploitation but breaks 9P filesystem sharing between Xen domains. If 9P functionality is required and patching is delayed, isolate Xen hosts to trusted network segments only (firewall rules restricting adjacent network access), though this reduces attack surface rather than eliminating the vulnerability. Compensating controls trade-off: disabling 9P breaks cross-domain filesystem access; network isolation may impact legitimate management traffic. No userspace-only mitigation exists for kernel memory corruption issues.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's 9P filesystem implementation for Xen virtualization environments (net/9p/trans_xen.c subsystem). The 9P protocol provides Plan 9-style file system access between Xen domains, commonly used in virtualized environments for shared filesystems. The race condition occurs in the xenwatch kernel thread, which monitors Xen back-end state changes. When multiple concurrent notifications trigger device teardown, the xen_9pfs_front_free() function can be called multiple times without synchronization, leading to a classic use-after-free condition. The kernel dereferences already-freed memory (0x6b6b6b6b6b6b6b6b poison pattern indicates SLUB allocator free list corruption), resulting in general protection faults. This is a concurrency bug requiring proper locking/serialization of the cleanup path. CPE strings (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux) indicate broad impact across Linux kernel versions from commit 1da177e4c3f4 (initial git import circa 2.6.12) through affected stable branches prior to the patches.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

9p/xen: protect xen_9pfs_front_free against concurrent calls

The xenwatch thread can race with other back-end change notifications and call xen_9pfs_front_free() twice, hitting the observed general protection fault due to a double-free. Guard the teardown path so only one caller can release the front-end state at a time, preventing the crash.

This is a fix for the following double-free:

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity memory corruption vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Xen 9P filesystem driver could allow adjacent network attackers to crash systems or execute arbitrary code, affecting any Linux deployment using Xen virtualization with 9P filesystem enabled. While exploitation probability remains low and no active exploitation has been confirmed, the kernel-level impact and high CVSS score warrant prompt patching to prevent potential denial-of-service or privilege escalation incidents in virtualized environments.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch. Interim mitigations if patching is delayed: disable Xen 9P filesystem driver (CONFIG_XEN_9PFS=n) on systems where 9P filesystem is not required; restrict network access to Xen backend domains; implement hypervisor-level network segmentation to isolate 9P traffic.
