In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
9p/xen: protect xen_9pfs_front_free against concurrent calls
The xenwatch thread can race with other back-end change notifications and call xen_9pfs_front_free() twice, hitting the observed general protection fault due to a double-free. Guard the teardown path so only one caller can release the front-end state at a time, preventing the crash.
This is a fix for the following double-free:

AnalysisAI
Double-free memory corruption in Linux kernel's Xen 9P filesystem driver (9p/xen) allows adjacent network attackers to crash the kernel or potentially execute arbitrary code. The xenwatch thread racing with back-end state changes triggers use-after-free during teardown of xen_9pfs_front_free(), causing general protection faults. Vendor patches available for mainline 7.0 and stable branches 6.19.6, 6.18.16, and 6.12.75. EPSS score of 0.02% (5th percentile) suggests low exploitation probability in the wild; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing at time of analysis.
Technical ContextAI
This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's 9P filesystem implementation for Xen virtualization environments (net/9p/trans_xen.c subsystem). The 9P protocol provides Plan 9-style file system access between Xen domains, commonly used in virtualized environments for shared filesystems. The race condition occurs in the xenwatch kernel thread, which monitors Xen back-end state changes. When multiple concurrent notifications trigger device teardown, the xen_9pfs_front_free() function can be called multiple times without synchronization, leading to a classic use-after-free condition. The kernel dereferences already-freed memory (0x6b6b6b6b6b6b6b6b poison pattern indicates SLUB allocator free list corruption), resulting in general protection faults. This is a concurrency bug requiring proper locking/serialization of the cleanup path. CPE strings (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux) indicate broad impact across Linux kernel versions from commit 1da177e4c3f4 (initial git import circa 2.6.12) through affected stable branches prior to the patches.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to patched Linux kernel versions: mainline 7.0 or later (commit ce8ded2e61f47747e31eeefb44dc24a2160a7e32), or stable branches 6.19.6 (commit 59e7707492576bdbfa8c1dbe7d90791df31e4773), 6.18.16 (commit a5d00dff97118a32fcf5fec7a4c3f864c4620c4e), or 6.12.75 (commit bf841d43f7a33d75675ba7f4e214ac1c67913065). Patches available from kernel.org stable repository. For systems where immediate kernel upgrade is not feasible, disable the Xen 9P transport module (modprobe -r 9pnet_xen) if it is loaded as a module and not required for critical operations; this prevents exploitation but breaks 9P filesystem sharing between Xen domains. If 9P functionality is required and patching is delayed, isolate Xen hosts to trusted network segments only (firewall rules restricting adjacent network access), though this reduces attack surface rather than eliminating the vulnerability. Compensating controls trade-off: disabling 9P breaks cross-domain filesystem access; network isolation may impact legitimate management traffic. No userspace-only mitigation exists for kernel memory corruption issues.
