| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable only against a mail form created in the baserCMS admin that contains a field of type 'Email' for which the separate optional 'VALID_EMAIL' server-side format check is NOT enabled - which is the default state for newly created email-type fields - and that form must be published publicly. The bundled 'Contact' form is explicitly NOT affected because its email field has VALID_EMAIL set and rejects comma-containing values server-side. The practical limiting factor is that the attacker must bypass the client-side HTML type=email validation by sending a crafted request directly (trivial with any HTTP tool); no authentication, no admin access, and no victim/user interaction are required. Observed recipient count reached at least 5 per submission; no hard code-level cap on recipients was confirmed by the reporter. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity abuse issue, not a system-compromise priority. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, 5.3) is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated attacker can trigger it over the network against an affected public form with no user interaction, but the only impact is a low integrity effect (the site is coerced into sending unsolicited mail in its own name) with no confidentiality or availability loss. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), which aligns with a mail-relay/spam-abuse problem rather than code execution. No CISA KEV entry and no EPSS score are present in the input, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation - exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified' in the strict KEV sense, however the GHSA advisory itself documents concrete reproduction steps (confirmed by the reporter on 5.4.0, delivering to 5 recipients in one submission), so a public PoC reference exists; it is not verified as packaged working exploit code. The main conflicting/nuanced signal: CVSS rates integrity as Low and keeps scope Unchanged, yet the real-world harm (sender-domain reputation damage, third parties receiving site-branded mail) partly lands on systems outside the application, which some analysts would score as a scope change - treat the 5.3 as a floor for the reputational/business risk. Overall this is a 'patch on a normal cycle' issue, elevated only for sites running custom (non-bundled) mail forms. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker finds a publicly published baserCMS mail form built in the admin with an 'Email'-type field that lacks the optional VALID_EMAIL server-side check (the default for new fields), and submits a crafted request - bypassing the browser's type=email check - with the email field set to 'victim1@a.com,victim2@b.net,victim3@c.org'. The server splits the value on commas and addresses a single auto-reply, sent from the site's own identity and domain with partially attacker-controlled body content, to all of those third parties. The GHSA advisory documents this reproduction (5 recipients confirmed in one submission), so a public PoC reference exists; it is not verified as packaged working exploit code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
Unauthenticated visitors can turn a baserCMS site into a relay for unsolicited mail: submitting a comma-separated address list in an email-type field of a public mail form causes the site's single auto-reply to be delivered to every listed third party, under the site's own sender identity and with partially attacker-controlled body content. Affected are baserCMS 5.2.5 through 5.4.1, but only where a mail form was created in the admin panel with a field of type 'Email' and the separate optional VALID_EMAIL server-side format check was left disabled - the default state for newly created fields; the bundled Contact form enables VALID_EMAIL and is explicitly not affected, and browser-side type=email validation does not stop crafted requests. Severity is moderate (CVSS 5.3, integrity-only, no confidentiality or availability impact), no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV), and the advisory documents reproduction steps rather than released exploit code; the practical damage is reputational and deliverability-related, since the site's sending domain may be treated as a spam source and the admin only sees a single ordinary inquiry record.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to baserCMS 5.3.2 (for the 5.2.x/5.3.x branch) or 5.4.2 (for the 5.4.x branch), which apply email-format validation to every 'Email'-type field server-side and restrict auto-reply recipients to a single validated address; release artifacts are at https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/releases/tag/5.3.2 and https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/releases/tag/5.4.2, with the code change in commit 99e6257c9d5e2fa2bff2351defcb9fb37f69daf1 and the advisory at https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/security/advisories/GHSA-w47c-4g8m-gjv9. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the vendor-documented workaround is to enable the 'Email format check' (VALID_EMAIL) validation on the email field of every mail form that has one, which brings custom forms in line with the bundled 'Contact' form and makes the server reject comma-containing values - with the trade-off that administrators must remember to set it on every new field, since it is off by default and the mitigation is per-form rather than global, and any auto-reply destination derivation that falls back to non-'email' fields (the legacy email/email_1 path) remains reachable until the code is updated. No other vendor-sanctioned compensating controls are documented.

Technical ContextAI · show details
baserCMS is a PHP web framework built on CakePHP, and the flaw sits in the bundled bc-mail plugin (mail form / BcMail). In plugins/bc-mail/src/Mailer/MailMessageMailer.php, sendFormToUser() passed the visitor-controlled $userMail value into parseAndNormalizeMailAddresses(), a helper evidently written for operator-configured multi-recipient settings such as sender_1/sender_2 where comma-separated lists are legitimate. That helper splits the string with explode(',') and returns the array straight into setTo(), so a single submission to a public form addressed the auto-reply to every parsed address. The root cause is CWE-20 improper input validation: a value coming from an untrusted visitor was handled with the same parsing path as trusted administrator configuration, and no server-side single-address validation was applied to email-type fields unless the optional VALID_EMAIL check was explicitly enabled. Client-side HTML type=email output blocks the comma from normal browsers but has no server-side counterpart. The upstream fix (commit 99e6257c9d5e2fa2bff2351defcb9fb37f69daf1) adds, in MailMessagesTable::setupValidate(), an unconditional email rule for every field whose type is 'email' regardless of the VALID_EMAIL setting, and rewrites MailFrontService::getUserMail() to consider only fields of type 'email' (dropping the legacy email/email_1 fallback that also accepted POST values with no matching form definition), trim the value and reject it unless CakePHP Validation::email() accepts it - a defense-in-depth pair of a validation rule plus a strict single-address gate at recipient selection.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
baserCMS is a website development framework. In versions 5.2.5 before 5.3.2 and 5.4.0 before 5.4.2, an unauthenticated visitor can supply a comma-separated address list in a public mail form's email field and cause a single auto-reply to be addressed to multiple third parties. MailMessageMailer::sendFormToUser() passes the visitor-controlled userMail value to parseAndNormalizeMailAddresses(), which splits it with explode(',') and supplies every resulting address to setTo(). Newly created forms with an email-type field are affected when the separate, optional VALID_EMAIL server-side validation is not enabled; browser type=email validation does not prevent crafted requests. The bundled contact form enables VALID_EMAIL and is not affected. The auto-reply uses the site's sender identity and includes partially attacker-controlled content, allowing abuse of the site to deliver unsolicited mail. This issue has been patched in versions 5.3.2 and 5.4.2.
