Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a non-default, developer-introduced condition: an Apache Camel route must define a platform-http endpoint whose configured path begins with the five characters 'proxy' (such as proxyStats, proxy-health, or proxying) but is not meant to be the documented platform-http:proxy endpoint. Only such endpoints are wrongly promoted to proxy mode, where getPath() returns '/' (making them catch-all) and VertxPlatformHttpConsumer.handleProxy() takes the forward target from the request's own Host header. Limiting factors: endpoints beginning with a leading slash (platform-http:/proxy) are NOT affected; default deployments with no proxy-prefixed endpoints are not exploitable; the issue is confined to Apache Camel versions 4.0.0 before 4.18.5 and 4.19.0 before 4.22.1 using the camel-platform-http component. The dependence on a specific operator naming choice is what drives the high attack complexity.

Impact

CVSS 3.1 base score is 4.8 (medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N - network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), but with high attack complexity (AC:H) and only partial confidentiality/integrity impact. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence set, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation. The AC:H rating is the dominant real-world mitigator: exploitation is not against a default state but depends entirely on a developer having created an Apache Camel platform-http endpoint whose path happens to begin with the literal string 'proxy' (e.g. proxyStats, proxy-health, proxying) without intending it to be a proxy. The reporter is the vendor (apache) and a patch exists, which is consistent with a responsibly-disclosed hardening fix rather than an in-the-wild issue. Net assessment: a genuine request-forgery/SSRF-class weakness worth patching, but a low-to-medium real priority rather than an emergency - the combination of AC:H, a required non-default endpoint-naming precondition, and absence of EPSS/KEV/POC signals argues against widespread opportunistic exploitation. No key CVSS signal conflicts with the description; the AC:H rating correctly reflects the config-dependent precondition described.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A developer names a Camel platform-http endpoint 'proxyStats' (or similar) to serve its own status content; because proxy mode was selected by prefix match, that endpoint silently becomes a catch-all proxy that forwards requests to the target named in the incoming request's own Host header. A remote caller then sends requests through that endpoint with a crafted Host header to make the server relay traffic to internal systems it would not otherwise reach. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Prefix confusion in Apache Camel's camel-platform-http component silently promotes ordinary HTTP endpoints to forwarding proxies, letting remote unauthenticated callers relay requests to targets they choose via the Host header and reach content the route author never intended to expose. Only Camel deployments running a platform-http route whose configured path begins with the five characters 'proxy' (for example proxyStats, proxy-health or proxying) while not intending the documented platform-http:proxy endpoint are affected - a developer-introduced naming condition that keeps attack complexity high and drives the modest CVSS 3.1 score of 4.8 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N). Default deployments without such endpoints are not exploitable, and no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, or to 4.18.5 if you track the 4.18.x LTS stream, or to 4.22.1 if you track the 4.22.x LTS stream - all three fix the issue by selecting proxy mode only on an exact 'proxy' path match. Review your route definitions before and after upgrading for any platform-http endpoint whose path merely begins with 'proxy' (proxyStats, proxy-config, proxy-health, proxying and similar): if such a route is not meant to be a proxy, rename the path so it no longer shares the prefix, which is the recommended workaround for deployments that cannot upgrade immediately and removes the exposure entirely once the application is redeployed. Because the vulnerable proxy endpoint is a catch-all that takes its forward target from the caller's Host header, an interim compensating control is to front the affected service with a reverse proxy or gateway rule that rejects requests whose Host header does not match an expected allowlist - effective against this specific forwarding behaviour but requiring a maintained host allowlist and risking breakage for legitimate multi-tenant or virtual-host routing. Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-1220 (Insufficient Granularity of Access Control) describes authorization decisions made at a coarser level than the resource they are meant to protect, and this case is a textbook instance: PlatformHttpEndpoint.isHttpProxy() decided whether an endpoint ran in proxy mode with the expression path.startsWith(PROXY_PATH) instead of an equality check against the literal 'proxy'. Because proxy mode also changes getPath() to return '/', an endpoint such as platform-http:proxyStats stops being a bounded route and becomes a catch-all consumer, and VertxPlatformHttpConsumer.handleProxy() then populates Exchange.HTTP_HOST from the inbound request's own Host header so a downstream bridging producer forwards the traffic there. The result is both a server-side request forgery primitive and an information-disclosure path over anything the forwarding hop can reach. The fix in the upstream pull request replaces the prefix test with PROXY_PATH.equals(this.path), and the accompanying test class explicitly locks in that platform-http:/proxy (leading slash) was and remains non-proxy, so narrowing the check can never convert a legitimate endpoint into a proxy. These are standard Apache Camel components built on the Vert.x-based platform HTTP engine and used in Spring Boot and Quarkus style deployments; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_camel tracks the affected product family.

DescriptionCVE.org

Insufficient Granularity of Access Control vulnerability in Apache Camel Platform HTTP component.

This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.

The component decided whether an endpoint ran in proxy mode by testing whether its configured path started with the string proxy, rather than by matching the path exactly. Any endpoint whose path merely begins with those characters - proxyStatus, proxy-config, proxying and so on - therefore became a proxy endpoint without the route author asking for it. A proxy endpoint forwards requests onward, so an endpoint that was intended to serve its own content instead relays traffic on behalf of whoever calls it, which is both a request forgery primitive and an exposure of whatever the forwarding path can reach.

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Proxy mode is now selected by an exact path match rather than by prefix. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, rename any endpoint path that begins with proxy but is not intended to be a proxy.
