MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target to deploy the Apache Camel camel-mina component as a consumer (socket server) operating in sync mode on an affected version (4.0.0 before 4.18.5, or 4.19.0 before 4.22.1), so that a reply is written back to the peer. The attacker must be able to reach that socket and provoke a failure during exchange processing; the information exposed depends on the codec in use - the textline codec leaks only the exception class name and message, while the object codec serialises the entire exception and cause chain. Before the fix there was no option to suppress this, so default configurations are affected. Limiting factors: the leak only occurs on the Mina consumer path (not the more common HTTP consumers), the severity of leaked data varies by what exceptions carry, and impact is confined to information disclosure with no code execution or data modification. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity information-disclosure issue (CWE-209) best treated as low-priority hardening rather than an urgent threat. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 5.3) is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated peer can trigger the leak with low complexity, but impact is limited to low confidentiality with no integrity or availability effect. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided - exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' There is no conflict among the available signals; they uniformly point to a real but low-consequence flaw. The practical risk is proportional to what the leaked exception messages actually contain (class/package names, and potentially paths, hostnames, or connection detail), which varies by deployment. Exploitation is further gated by the deployment actually using the camel-mina component as a sync consumer, which is a niche transport. Net: genuine data-leak worth patching, but not a high-real-risk emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a service built on Apache Camel's Mina consumer sends crafted input that causes the exchange to fail during processing. The framework writes exchange.getException() back over the socket - the exception class name and message over the textline codec, or the full serialised exception and cause chain over the object codec - handing the attacker internal deployment detail such as package names, file paths, hostnames, or connection strings. No public exploit code is identified, but triggering a processing failure is straightforward against a reachable endpoint. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Error messages written back over the socket by the Apache Camel camel-mina consumer leak internal deployment details to any remote peer that can provoke a processing failure. Affected deployments are Camel 4.0.0 through 4.18.4 and 4.19.0 through 4.22.0 that use camel-mina as a consumer (socket server) in sync mode, where the peer is unauthenticated per the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) and the impact is limited to confidentiality (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect. The exposure ranges from exception class and message text under the textline codec to a fully serialised exception with its cause chain under the object codec; exploitability depends on the attacker reaching the socket and triggering a failure, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis - treat this as moderate-severity hardening rather than an urgent threat.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, or to 4.18.5 if on the 4.18.x LTS stream, or to 4.22.1 if on the 4.22.x LTS stream (vendor-released patch; advisory https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-85246.html, implementation in https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25741 with backports in https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25934 and https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25935). After upgrading, verify that the new muteException consumer option remains at its default of true, which replaces the route exception with a generic one carrying no class name, message or stack trace while still writing a reply; setting muteException=false restores the vulnerable behaviour and should be avoided unless a peer genuinely depends on exception payloads, in which case that socket must be network-restricted. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, add an onException handler on the Mina route that sets the reply body explicitly so the framework never writes the exception back to the peer - the trade-off is that every failing exchange must be handled explicitly, and any unhandled path continues to leak. Additional compensating controls: avoid the object codec on camel-mina consumers in favour of the textline codec to reduce the leak from a serialised cause chain to a class name and message, and restrict network access to the Mina consumer port to trusted peers, accepting that this narrows legitimate connectivity.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CWE-209 (Generation of Error Message Containing Sensitive Information) in the Apache Camel camel-mina component, which wraps Apache MINA for TCP/UDP transports. On the MinaConsumer path, when exchange processing failed, the consumer wrote exchange.getException() directly back over the IoSession to the remote peer instead of returning a sanitised reply. Because the wire format is governed by the configured codec, the leak scales with that choice: a textline codec transmits only the exception's class name and message, while the object codec serialises the whole exception object including nested causes, so package and class names, filesystem paths, host names and connection details carried in message or cause text can all reach the peer. The component previously offered no switch to suppress this behaviour, unlike the HTTP-family consumers that were aligned under CAMEL-23651, meaning default configurations were exposed. The upstream fix introduces a muteException consumer option (default true) that substitutes a generic exception with no class name, message or stack trace while still sending a reply so synchronous peers do not block until timeout.

DescriptionCVE.org
Generation of Error Message Containing Sensitive Information vulnerability in Apache Camel Mina component.
This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.
When processing of an exchange failed, the Mina consumer wrote exchange.getException() straight back over the socket to the remote peer. Over a textline codec that hands the peer the exception's class name and message; over the object codec it hands over the serialised exception, cause chain included. A remote peer able to provoke a failure could therefore read internal detail about the deployment - class and package names, and whatever a message or nested cause happens to carry, which in practice can include paths, host names and connection detail. The consumer had no option to suppress this, unlike the HTTP-family consumers aligned by CAMEL-23651.
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. A muteException consumer option, defaulting to true, replaces the route exception with a generic one carrying no class name, message or stack trace, while still writing a reply so that a synchronous peer is not left to time out. Set muteException=false to restore the previous behaviour. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, add an onException handler that sets the reply body explicitly, so the framework never writes the exception back to the peer.
