MITRE ATT&CK

| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a Camel route that uses the camel-knative component as an HTTP consumer (Knative eventing/serving HTTP consumer) reachable by the attacker, AND an exchange that fails during processing on the consumer side. In vulnerable versions the exception was written back by default, so no special option was needed to trigger disclosure. Limiting factors: the deployment must actually expose the Knative HTTP consumer to untrusted callers, the attacker must be able to induce a processing failure, and the value of the leak depends on whether exception messages carry sensitive detail (host names, file paths, or connection strings). After upgrade the new muteException option defaults to true, returning an empty body with the error status; explicitly setting muteException=false re-exposes the behaviour. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity information-disclosure issue, correctly rated CVSS 5.3 (MEDIUM). The vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated sender reachable over the network can provoke an exchange processing failure and receive the exception class, message, and stack trace in the HTTP response body. Only confidentiality is affected (C:L); there is no integrity or availability impact, so this is a reconnaissance/disclosure aid rather than a direct code-execution or takeover flaw. No EPSS score was provided in the input, and the issue is NOT in CISA KEV and has no public exploit code referenced - exploitation signals are therefore low. The practical risk is low-to-moderate: exploitation is trivial where the vulnerable Knative HTTP consumer is exposed, but the payoff is leaked internal detail (package/class names, host/file names, and potentially connection strings embedded in exception messages) that primarily enables follow-on targeting, not immediate compromise. No conflicting signals: the network vector matches the HTTP-consumer deployment model described. Priority should be driven by whether camel-knative is actually exposed to untrusted callers and whether sensitive data appears in exception messages in a given deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An external sender sends a request to a Camel route whose Knative HTTP consumer is reachable, crafting input that causes processing of the exchange to fail. The framework writes the resulting Java exception - class name, message, and full stack trace - back as the HTTP response body, revealing internal package structure, host or file names, and any connection strings embedded in the exception message. No public exploit code is referenced; the attack requires only the ability to reach the endpoint and trigger a processing error. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Apache Camel's camel-knative HTTP consumer writes the full exception - class name, message, and stack trace - back to the remote caller whenever an exchange fails on the consumer side, letting any external sender provoke a route failure and harvest internal deployment detail (package and class names, host names, file paths, route shape, and any configuration or connection strings embedded in exception messages). The flaw affects Camel from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5 and from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1; camel-knative was the last HTTP-family consumer not yet aligned with the muteException behaviour introduced for the other HTTP consumers under CAMEL-23651. Rated CVSS 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, C:L only), it requires the Knative HTTP consumer to be reachable by untrusted callers and an induced processing failure; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no indication of active exploitation.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Apache Camel 4.23.0 fixes the issue; users on the 4.18.x LTS stream should upgrade to 4.18.5 and users on the 4.22.x LTS stream to 4.22.1 (advisory: https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-84180.html, patches in https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25685, https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25835 and https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25836). After upgrading the consumer honours a muteException option that defaults to true, so a failed exchange returns an empty body with the error status; note that explicitly setting muteException=false restores the vulnerable output, so audit existing route configurations for that setting. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, add an onException handler on the affected Knative routes that sets a fixed, non-revealing response body and clears the exception (trade-off: the handler must be maintained per route and a route added later without it remains exposed), and restrict network access to Knative HTTP consumer endpoints with Kubernetes NetworkPolicy or an ingress allowlist so only trusted callers can reach them (trade-off: legitimate external event sources must be enumerated and may need proxy paths). Reducing the verbosity of application logging and scrubbing secrets from exception messages limits the value of any residual leak but does not close the exposure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
camel-knative implements Camel's HTTP consumer for Knative eventing/serving, meaning a route endpoint receives inbound HTTP requests and dispatches the resulting Exchange through the route. The root cause is CWE-209 (Generation of Error Message Containing Sensitive Information): in the vulnerable versions, the consumer's error path serialised the caught Throwable into the HTTP response body rather than a generic error page. Because Java stack traces and exception messages routinely carry fully qualified class and package names, absolute file paths, internal host and pod names, and occasionally interpolated configuration values such as connection strings or broker URIs, a caller who can force a routing or processor failure learns the internal composition of the deployment - useful reconnaissance for a follow-up targeted attack, and in some deployments an outright credential or endpoint disclosure. The fix, visible in the upstream pull request, adds a muteException component/endpoint property to KnativeConfiguration with a defaultValue of true, mirroring the muteException semantics CAMEL-23651 had already established in the other HTTP-family consumers; the catalog JSON is regenerated to include the new option. The associated CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) confirms the issue is remotely reachable without authentication, but the sole impact is confidentiality, limited (C:L); integrity and availability are unaffected.

Remote unauthenticated caller can trivially provoke a failure and read the returned stack trace (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N); only limited confidentiality impact (C:L), no integrity or availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org
Generation of Error Message Containing Sensitive Information vulnerability in Apache Camel Knative component.
This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.
When processing of an exchange failed on the consumer side, the Knative HTTP consumer wrote the resulting exception back to the remote caller as the response body, including its class name, message and stack trace. An external sender could therefore provoke a failure and read internal detail about the deployment: class and package names, file system or host names carried in exception messages, and the shape of the route. That detail is useful for building a more targeted attack, and where an exception message embeds configuration or connection strings it is disclosure in its own right. camel-knative was the remaining HTTP-family consumer that had not been aligned with the muteException behaviour established for the other HTTP consumers by CAMEL-23651.
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. The consumer now honours a muteException option that defaults to true, so a route failure returns an empty body with the error status rather than the exception. Set muteException=false to restore the previous output. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, add an onException handler that sets the response body explicitly, so that the framework never writes the exception back to the caller.
