MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must be network-adjacent (AV:A) - i.e. on the same local link / multicast broadcast domain as the target - because the flaw is in NoMachine's parsing of mDNS (link-local multicast) resource records; it is not exploitable across routed/internet boundaries without an mDNS relay. NoMachine must have its mDNS service discovery active and listening (default behavior for host discovery). No authentication (PR:N), no user interaction (UI:N), and low complexity (AC:L) are required against a reachable instance. The primary limiting factor is the adjacency requirement: hosts on isolated or segmented networks, or with mDNS disabled/filtered at the switch, are not reachable by this attack. |
| Impact | Signals are moderately consistent and point to a genuine but condition-gated priority. The CVSS 3.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 8.8 High) establishes unauthenticated code execution with full CIA impact, but the ADJACENT attack vector (AV:A) - not Network - is the decisive risk-limiter: the attacker must sit on the same logical link/broadcast domain as the target, since mDNS is a link-local multicast protocol. This is NOT internet-wide remotely exploitable. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or public weaponization; this is a ZDI-coordinated disclosure (ZDI-CAN-30982 / ZDI-26-710), which typically means a patch-coordinated advisory rather than in-the-wild abuse. The combination of low attack complexity, no authentication, no user interaction, and heap-overflow-to-RCE in a service-account context makes this attractive for lateral movement on shared LANs (offices, coworking spaces, conference/hotel/guest networks), but the adjacency requirement keeps it below the tier of a wormable internet-facing flaw. Net: treat as a high-priority patch for endpoints on untrusted or shared L2 networks, lower priority for isolated/segmented hosts. No conflicting signals, but the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data means exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the input. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker on the same local network segment as a NoMachine host (e.g. a shared office LAN, public Wi-Fi, or guest VLAN) broadcasts a crafted mDNS resource record containing an oversized length field. NoMachine's mDNS parser copies the user-supplied data into an undersized heap buffer without bounds validation, corrupting heap memory and allowing arbitrary code execution in the context of the service account. No authentication or user interaction is required; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in NoMachine's mDNS resource-record parsing enables unauthenticated, network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations, running in the context of the NoMachine service account. Exploitation requires the attacker to be on the same local link/multicast domain as the target (AV:A), with NoMachine's mDNS service discovery active and reachable; no authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N) is required, and complexity is low (AC:L), giving a CVSS 8.8 impact of high confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Originally reported through Trend Micro ZDI as ZDI-CAN-30982 (advisory ZDI-26-710), the flaw is a classic CWE-122 length-validation failure; no public exploit code or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the practical risk is gated by the adjacency precondition rather than internet-wide reachability.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis; consult NoMachine's security advisory channels and the ZDI advisory ZDI-26-710 (https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-26-710/) for the fixed build and apply it as soon as it is published. Until then, the highest-value control is to disable NoMachine's mDNS/Bonjour service discovery where it is not operationally required - the trade-off is loss of automatic local host discovery, so users must connect by hostname or IP. Where discovery must remain enabled, block UDP 5353 inbound from untrusted segments at switches and firewalls, and disable mDNS flooding/reflection on access ports; this also breaks other Bonjour/Avahi/AirPrint discovery, so scope the filter to ports facing untrusted users. Network segmentation that keeps untrusted hosts off the same Layer-2 multicast domain as NoMachine servers removes the AV:A precondition entirely, and running the NoMachine service under a least-privileged account limits post-exploitation impact but does not prevent the overflow itself. Monitor for malformed or oversized mDNS resource records targeting NoMachine hosts as a detection signal while patching is pending.

Technical ContextAI · show details
NoMachine uses multicast DNS (mDNS, RFC 6762, UDP port 5353) for zero-configuration host discovery so clients can locate instances on the local segment without a central name server. The vulnerability lives in the code that parses mDNS resource records: a length field taken from the received packet is not properly validated before data is copied into a heap-allocated buffer, so a crafted record whose declared length exceeds the actual buffer allocation causes a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122). Because mDNS is link-local multicast, packets are not routed across boundaries by default, which is why the vector is AV:A rather than AV:N - the attacker must share the multicast/broadcast domain with the target or reach it through an mDNS relay. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:nomachine:nomachine:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* uses a wildcard version, indicating that the advisory does not enumerate a fixed version range; all NoMachine builds exposing mDNS discovery should be presumed affected until the vendor clarifies. Successful exploitation yields code execution as the service account, and the ZDI reference (ZDI-26-710) is currently the sole public source of technical detail.

mDNS is link-local so AV:A; parsing flaw needs no auth or interaction (PR:N/UI:N/AC:L); heap-overflow RCE in the service account yields full C/I/A:H.

DescriptionCVE.org
NoMachine mDNS Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of NoMachine. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of mDNS resource records. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the service account. Was ZDI-CAN-30982.
Executive ViewAI
NoMachine's mDNS service discovery exposes affected installations to a high-severity, unauthenticated heap overflow that can allow an attacker on the same local network segment to run code under the NoMachine service account. Leadership should care because compromise could disrupt endpoint access and expose data on affected hosts, although the local-link precondition limits broad internet-facing exposure. No public exploit identified at time of analysis or confirmed active exploitation was identified.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim controls include disabling NoMachine mDNS service discovery where not required, blocking UDP 5353 multicast across local-link boundaries, segmenting NoMachine hosts onto trusted VLANs, limiting local-link adjacency, and monitoring mDNS traffic and NoMachine service-account activity.
