Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation required the CloudPirates/helm-charts repository to be on a commit prior to fcf9302 with the generate-schema.yaml (and pull-request.yaml) workflows configured to trigger on pull_request_target while checking out the PR head ref from forks and exposing the Personal Access Token plus SSH signing key as workflow secrets. Any unauthenticated GitHub user could open a pull request from a fork to trigger the workflow - no special privileges, user interaction by maintainers, or non-default GitHub configuration was needed beyond the repository being public and accepting external PRs. The limiting factor is that this is a single specific repository's CI environment; the vulnerability is not present in any deployed product, and post-patch the 'external' environment gate now requires reviewer approval before the privileged job runs.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N) yields a 10.0 base score driven by network reach, no authentication, no user interaction, and a scope change reflecting that stolen credentials grant access beyond the original repo (the leaked PAT and SSH signing key can sign commits and push to other resources). Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - neither KEV nor a published POC is referenced - though the underlying pull_request_target abuse pattern is widely documented and trivially automatable. EPSS data was not supplied, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The realistic risk is high: any GitHub user can open a PR against a public repo, so the barrier to attempt exploitation is essentially zero, but exploitation is now historical because the maintainers have patched the workflow.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker forks the CloudPirates/helm-charts repository, modifies the schema generation script or any file executed by the vulnerable workflow to exfiltrate environment secrets (e.g. curl the PAT and SSH signing key to an attacker-controlled endpoint), and opens a pull request against the upstream repo. The pull_request_target trigger fires automatically, GitHub Actions checks out the attacker's fork code, runs it with the privileged base-repo secrets in scope, and the attacker captures the credentials - which can then be used to push signed commits or access other resources the PAT authorizes.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jun 01, 2026

Credential exposure in CloudPirates Open Source Helm Charts (prior to commit fcf9302) allows attackers to steal a Personal Access Token and SSH signing key by submitting a malicious pull request that the vulnerable GitHub Actions workflow checks out and executes with privileged secrets. The repository's generate-schema.yaml workflow used unsafe pull_request_target patterns combined with checkout of fork-controlled code, enabling code injection into a privileged CI context. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the attack pattern is well-documented for this class of GitHub Actions misconfiguration.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available via commit fcf930211604652aec15085895b6457bc8b73b54; maintainers and forks of this repository should pull or rebase onto that commit or later, which adds a manual-approval authorize gate via the 'external' GitHub environment and removes the synchronize trigger. Organizations maintaining similar workflows should audit any pull_request_target usage to ensure they never checkout untrusted PR head refs while privileged secrets are accessible, restrict GITHUB_TOKEN permissions to read-only where possible, store sensitive PATs and signing keys in environment-scoped secrets guarded by required reviewers, and consider rotating the previously exposed Personal Access Token and SSH signing key on the assumption they may have been harvested before the patch. Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in GitHub Actions workflow files (generate-schema.yaml and pull-request.yaml) within the CloudPirates Helm Charts repository, identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:cloudpirates-io:helm-charts. The root cause is CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code / Code Injection) manifesting as a 'pwn request' style flaw: workflows triggered by pull_request_target run with the base repository's secrets and write token, yet the workflow checked out and executed code from the untrusted fork PR head. The patch (commit fcf930211604652aec15085895b6457bc8b73b54) introduces an 'authorize' gate job tied to a protected GitHub environment named 'external' which requires manual approval for forks, and removes the 'synchronize' trigger to prevent automated re-execution on PR updates.

DescriptionCVE.org

CloudPirates Open Source Helm Charts is a collection of Helm charts. Prior to commit fcf9302, a GitHub Actions workflow (generate-schema.yaml) exposes sensitive credentials (Personal Access Token and SSH signing key) to fork-controlled code due to unsafe checkout and credential handling practices. This issue has been patched via commit fcf9302.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CloudPirates Open Source Helm Charts prior to commit fcf9302 contain a critical credential exposure flaw in GitHub Actions workflows that enables attackers to steal Personal Access Tokens and SSH signing keys through malicious pull requests. While no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the attack pattern is well-documented for this class of GitHub Actions misconfiguration, making this an immediate risk for any organization using affected versions.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or restrict the generate-schema.yaml workflow to push events only; require manual approval before any pull_request_target workflow execution; immediately rotate all PAT and SSH signing keys used in CI/CD; implement real-time audit logging on credential access and deployments; monitor GitHub Actions logs for suspicious pull request activity; consider temporarily disabling automatic deployments until code is updated to commit fcf9302 or later.

Code Injection CRITICAL

Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
