DescriptionCVE.org

Redis is an in-memory data structure store. In redis-server from 7.2.0 until 8.6.3, the unblock client flow does not handle an error return from processCommandAndResetClient when re-executing a blocked command. If a blocked client is evicted during this flow, an authenticated attacker can trigger a use-after-free that may lead to remote code execution. This has been patched in version 8.6.3.

AnalysisAI

Use-after-free in Redis 7.2.0 through 8.6.2 allows authenticated attackers to achieve remote code execution by exploiting error handling in the unblock client flow. When a blocked client is evicted during command re-execution, the server fails to handle the error return from processCommandAndResetClient, triggering memory corruption. Redis has released version 8.6.3 with a security fix. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing identified at time of analysis, suggesting limited observed exploitation despite the critical RCE impact.

Technical ContextAI

Redis is an in-memory NoSQL database using event-driven architecture with client blocking mechanisms for commands like BLPOP and BRPOP. The vulnerability (CWE-416: Use After Free) occurs in the client unblocking flow when processCommandAndResetClient returns an error during re-execution of a previously blocked command. If client eviction happens concurrently during this flow, the server accesses freed memory without proper validation. This race condition between eviction and command processing allows memory corruption in a network-facing service. The affected CPE (cpe:2.3:a:redis:redis) confirms the core Redis server product across versions 7.2.0 through 8.6.2. CVSS 4.0 vector indicates network attack vector with high complexity (AV:N/AC:H) requiring low privileges (PR:L), with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) but no scope change (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N).

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Redis 8.6.3 or later immediately, as confirmed by the official release at https://github.com/redis/redis/releases/tag/8.6.3 which addresses CVE-2026-23479 along with four additional RCE vulnerabilities. Organizations unable to patch immediately should implement network-level access controls to restrict Redis access to trusted internal networks only, disable or heavily restrict authenticated client access from untrusted sources, and monitor for unusual client eviction patterns or memory errors in Redis logs. Consider reducing maxmemory-policy aggressiveness and client timeout settings to minimize race condition windows, though these workarounds reduce availability and performance without eliminating the underlying use-after-free. Deploy Redis behind authentication proxies that can rate-limit connection churn if direct upgrade is delayed. All compensating controls are temporary-version 8.6.3 is the only complete fix for this memory safety issue.
