DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

xdp: produce a warning when calculated tailroom is negative

Many ethernet drivers report xdp Rx queue frag size as being the same as DMA write size. However, the only user of this field, namely bpf_xdp_frags_increase_tail(), clearly expects a truesize.

Such difference leads to unspecific memory corruption issues under certain circumstances, e.g. in ixgbevf maximum DMA write size is 3 KB, so when running xskxceiver's XDP_ADJUST_TAIL_GROW_MULTI_BUFF, 6K packet fully uses all DMA-writable space in 2 buffers. This would be fine, if only rxq->frag_size was properly set to 4K, but value of 3K results in a negative tailroom, because there is a non-zero page offset.

We are supposed to return -EINVAL and be done with it in such case, but due to tailroom being stored as an unsigned int, it is reported to be somewhere near UINT_MAX, resulting in a tail being grown, even if the requested offset is too much (it is around 2K in the abovementioned test). This later leads to all kinds of unspecific calltraces.

AnalysisAI

A memory corruption vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel's XDP (eXpress Data Path) subsystem where negative tailroom calculations are incorrectly reported as large unsigned integers, allowing buffer overflows during tail growth operations. This affects Linux kernel versions across multiple stable branches when certain Ethernet drivers (notably ixgbevf) report incorrect DMA write sizes, leading to heap corruption, segmentation faults, and general protection faults as demonstrated in the xskxceiver test utility. The vulnerability has no CVSS score assigned and shows no active KEV exploitation status, but represents a critical memory safety issue affecting systems using XDP with affected Ethernet drivers.

Technical ContextAI

The vulnerability resides in the Linux kernel's XDP buffer management subsystem, specifically in the bpf_xdp_frags_increase_tail() function and its interaction with the rxq->frag_size field. The root cause is a type casting issue (CWE-195: Signed to Unsigned Type Conversion Error) where a calculated negative tailroom value, when stored in an unsigned integer, wraps around to a value near UINT_MAX instead of properly triggering an -EINVAL error condition. Ethernet drivers like ixgbevf report DMA write size (3 KB) as frag_size instead of true page size (4 KB), and when combined with non-zero page offsets, this produces negative tailroom that is misinterpreted due to the unsigned integer representation. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, indicating all Linux kernel versions are potentially vulnerable depending on driver configuration. The XDP subsystem is a kernel-level packet processing framework used in high-performance networking scenarios.

RemediationAI

Immediately apply the latest kernel security patches from your Linux distribution's stable branch to obtain fixes from the referenced kernel commits (verify your kernel version against the patched versions at https://git.kernel.org/stable/). For distributions based on affected stable branches, check your vendor's advisory (Canonical for Ubuntu, Red Hat for RHEL, etc.) for backported versions. Until patching is possible, disable XDP processing on systems with ixgbevf or similar affected drivers if the functionality is not critical, or restrict XDP program loading to trusted administrators only via seccomp or AppArmor policies. Additionally, verify that your Ethernet driver correctly reports frag_size as true page allocation size (typically 4 KB) rather than DMA write size; contact your NIC vendor if discrepancies exist. Monitor systems for segmentation faults and general protection faults in kernel memory management functions as warning signs of exploitation.
