MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | User interaction is required: the target must open or process a malicious PNG file, either by visiting a web page that triggers GStreamer-backed media parsing or by directly opening a crafted file in an application using GStreamer. No system-level privileges or prior authentication to the target system are required from the attacker's perspective. The CVSS vector AV:L indicates the file must be processed locally on the victim system rather than exploitable purely over a network socket. Exploitation is limited to the privilege level of the process running GStreamer - typically the logged-in user, not root. Non-default conditions that reduce exposure: environments where GStreamer is not installed, applications that do not use GStreamer for PNG parsing (e.g., those using libpng directly without GStreamer), or systems where untrusted file processing is blocked by mandatory access control (SELinux, AppArmor profiles). |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.0 score of 7.8 with vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H accurately characterizes the risk: exploitation requires no system privileges and only low-complexity user interaction (opening a file), but the attack vector is local, meaning the malicious PNG must reach the victim's filesystem or be rendered in a local application context. No EPSS score was provided in the available data, which limits probabilistic exploitation forecasting. No KEV listing exists at time of analysis, so confirmed active exploitation is unestablished. However, file-parsing RCE vulnerabilities in multimedia frameworks are a well-understood attacker target - GStreamer is invoked by many applications (media players, browsers, GNOME components) that silently parse PNG files, lowering the effective user-interaction barrier. The ZDI disclosure (a high-credibility source) and existence of a vendor security advisory suggest coordinated disclosure with a patch available, which reduces urgency for patched systems but increases it for unpatched ones. No POC code is confirmed public, though ZDI advisories historically precede public POC releases. Overall: high priority for Linux desktop and embedded deployments; patch promptly. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker hosts a web page or sends a file containing a specially crafted PNG with a malformed chunk length field. When the victim opens the file in any application backed by GStreamer - a media player, image viewer, or browser with GStreamer integration - the PNG parser copies attacker-controlled data beyond the bounds of a heap buffer, corrupting adjacent allocations and enabling the attacker to redirect execution to shellcode or ROP chains running as the victim user. No confirmed public POC exists at time of analysis, but ZDI's disclosure process typically precedes one. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 20, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in GStreamer's PNG file parsing allows remote code execution in the context of the affected process. Affects GStreamer installations where a user can be induced to open or process a maliciously crafted PNG file - via a web page or file download. The flaw stems from missing length validation before copying attacker-controlled data into a heap buffer (CWE-122). No public exploit or CISA KEV listing is identified at time of analysis; however, ZDI disclosed the issue under ZDI-26-466 following coordinated disclosure, and GStreamer has issued security advisory sa-2026-0052.
RemediationAI
Upgrade GStreamer to a version incorporating commit 13fcb641ed33d1472e4ffdec2846180b15405053 or later, per ENISA EUVD-2026-63447. Consult the GStreamer security advisory at https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/security/sa-2026-0052.html for the specific patched release tag, as the exact tagged release version is not independently confirmed from available data. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict processing of untrusted PNG files through GStreamer pipelines by disabling or sandboxing applications that invoke GStreamer with external file input (e.g., run media players in a sandboxed environment using tools like Flatpak or Firejail). Disabling PNG plugin loading in GStreamer via GST_PLUGIN_PATH manipulation is a partial workaround but may break legitimate functionality and is not a supported configuration. Monitor the ZDI advisory at https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-26-466/ for POC or additional technical detail.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GStreamer is a widely deployed open-source multimedia pipeline framework used across Linux desktops, embedded systems, and streaming applications. The vulnerability resides in GStreamer's PNG file demuxer/parser component. CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow) identifies the root cause: attacker-controlled data length is not validated before being copied into a heap-allocated buffer, enabling a classic heap corruption primitive. Successful exploitation overwrites adjacent heap metadata or object pointers, enabling arbitrary code execution. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:gstreamer:gstreamer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions), with EUVD specifying commit 13fcb641ed33d1472e4ffdec2846180b15405053 as the patched state. The CVSS vector AV:L reflects that triggering the parser requires the file to be opened locally, even if delivered remotely.

DescriptionCVE.org
GStreamer PNG File Parsing Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PNG files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-29581.
Executive ViewAI
A heap-based buffer overflow in GStreamer's PNG file parsing engine (CVE-2026-18298) enables remote code execution if a user opens or processes a maliciously crafted PNG file, affecting organizations relying on GStreamer for media processing, web browsing, or content distribution workflows. This vulnerability poses an elevated risk to organizations with high-volume PNG handling, as successful exploitation grants complete process-level code execution and potential lateral movement within affected systems.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or uninstall GStreamer where operationally feasible; run GStreamer processes with least-privilege execution contexts and restricted file system access; implement mandatory file type validation at the application layer before PNG file processing; deploy email and web gateway filters to block PNG files from untrusted external sources; isolate PNG processing workloads from internet-facing services; establish continuous process monitoring to detect abnormal behavior following PNG file handling.
