| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three specific conditions to be met simultaneously. First, the RemoteQueryCachePlugin must be explicitly enabled in the JDBC wrapper configuration - it is an opt-in plugin, not active by default. Second, the application must execute queries that return XML-typed columns (SQLXML), which the plugin will serialize into the cache. Third, the attacker must have write access to the shared cache infrastructure (PR:L in the CVSS vector); this limits the attack to scenarios where the cache is multi-tenant, accessible from a compromised component, or misconfigured with open write permissions. What limits exploitation beyond these prerequisites: the attack produces confidentiality impact only (no code execution on the database host from the XXE alone), is constrained to files readable by the application process user, and requires the attacker to also be able to observe or retrieve the exfiltrated file content after injection. |
| Impact | The supplied CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:L) encodes a moderate-to-medium real-world risk: AC:H correctly reflects that the attacker must first achieve write access to the shared cache (a significant prerequisite), and PR:L confirms some level of privilege is needed. Despite C:H (full confidentiality loss of targeted files, including AWS IAM credentials), the combination of AC:H and PR:L brings the base score to 5.9 - a reasonable assessment. The A:L metric is not clearly supported by the description, which focuses exclusively on information disclosure; this may represent malformed XML triggering parse errors, but it is not independently confirmed. No public exploit code has been identified and the vulnerability is not in the CISA KEV catalog, suggesting no known active exploitation. The primary real-world concern is the sensitivity of what can be exfiltrated: IAM role credentials from EC2 instance metadata or database credential files would allow lateral movement within an AWS account, making the effective downstream impact materially higher than the base score implies. Organizations using the RemoteQueryCachePlugin with XML column types on externally-accessible or multi-tenant cache infrastructure should treat this as a higher practical priority than the 5.9 score alone suggests. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained write access to the shared Redis or Memcached instance used by the application - for example, via a compromised microservice, misconfigured cache ACLs, or a separate vulnerability - injects a crafted XML payload into a cached column value: the payload contains a DOCTYPE with a SYSTEM external entity referencing a sensitive local path such as the EC2 instance metadata endpoint or a credential file on disk. When a legitimate application thread reads the poisoned cached result and deserializes the SQLXML column, the Java XML parser resolves the external entity and returns the file contents, which are then accessible to the attacker through subsequent cache reads or application behavior. No public proof-of-concept has been identified at time of analysis. |

XML External Entity (XXE) injection in the RemoteQueryCachePlugin of AWS Advanced JDBC Wrapper 3.3.0-4.2.0 allows an actor with write access to the shared cache infrastructure to exfiltrate sensitive files - including database credentials and IAM role credentials - from any application host that reads poisoned cached query results. The attack is conditioned on the RemoteQueryCachePlugin being enabled and the application caching XML column types (SQLXML); an adversary with cache write access injects crafted XML containing external entity references into a cached column value, which are resolved when the application deserializes the cached result. Amazon released version 4.3.0 on 2026-07-23 to fix the issue; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to AWS Advanced JDBC Wrapper version 4.3.0 or later, released 2026-07-23 and available at https://github.com/aws/aws-advanced-jdbc-wrapper/releases/tag/4.3.0. This is confirmed as the vendor-released patch per the Amazon security bulletin at https://aws.amazon.com/security/security-bulletins/2026-109-aws/. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the RemoteQueryCachePlugin in the JDBC wrapper configuration, which eliminates the vulnerable code path entirely - this trades query caching performance for security and may increase RDS/Aurora load. As an additional compensating control, restrict write access to the shared cache infrastructure to only trusted application components using network ACLs or cache authentication, reducing the attacker's ability to inject poisoned values. Hardening the cache network perimeter does not fix the underlying XXE flaw but raises the bar for exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AWS Advanced JDBC Wrapper (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:aws:aws_advanced_jdbc_wrapper:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is an open-source Java JDBC driver wrapper maintained by Amazon for use with AWS RDS and Aurora databases. Its RemoteQueryCachePlugin offloads query result caching to a shared external store (such as Redis or Memcached). When database columns of type SQLXML (XML data type) are cached, the plugin serializes and later deserializes the XML payloads using a Java XML parser. The root cause is CWE-611: the XML parser is not configured to disable DOCTYPE declarations or external entity resolution, meaning a cached XML payload containing an XXE reference (e.g., referencing a local file path via a SYSTEM identifier) is processed when the application reads back the cached value. The fix in v4.3.0 is captured in PR #2034 ('Improved the CachedSQLXML user experience'), which hardened the XML parsing path for cached XML columns.

Improper restriction of XML external entity references in the RemoteQueryCachePlugin in AWS Advanced JDBC Wrapper 3.3.0 through 4.2.0 might allow an actor with write access to the shared cache infrastructure to disclose sensitive files from application hosts that read cached query results, including stored database and IAM role credentials, via crafted XML data in a cached column value.
To remediate this issue, users should upgrade to version 4.3.0 or later.
