| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a Grafana operator to install a plugin - via the plugin catalog, the grafana-cli tool, the GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS environment variable, or preinstall configuration - from an attacker-influenced archive; this operator action is the UI:R gate. Critically, plugin signature verification does NOT limit exploitation because archives are extracted before the signature is checked, so requiring signed plugins is not a mitigating control here. Applies to both Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise (identical extraction code). Limiting factors: an operator install action is mandatory (no unattended remote trigger against a running server), and impact is bounded to the privileges of the Grafana server process. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk paper cut. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 8.8) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity path to full remote code execution running with the privileges of the Grafana server process. The most important corroborating detail from the description is that plugin archives are extracted BEFORE signature verification - so the standard defense (only install signed plugins) does not stop the write, materially raising real-world risk versus a typical 'only install trusted plugins' caveat. The one strong mitigating signal is UI:R: exploitation requires an operator action (installing a plugin via the plugin catalog, grafana-cli, GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS, or preinstall config), so this is not a fully drive-by remote exploit against an idle server. No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or public POC was provided in the input, so per available data this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the severity rests on the technical impact and the signature-bypass property rather than on confirmed active exploitation. The PR:N with UI:R combination is internally consistent: the attacker needs no Grafana privileges, but a privileged operator must be socially engineered or misled into installing the malicious archive. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a plugin archive that looks legitimate (or convinces an operator to install an arbitrary archive) containing chained relative symlink entries. When a Grafana operator installs it via the catalog, grafana-cli, GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS, or preinstall config, extraction follows the symlinks out of the plugin directory and drops an executable backend binary elsewhere on disk, which Grafana then runs as the server process - yielding RCE. Because extraction precedes signature verification, even a validly signed-looking package flow does not prevent the write; no public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Symlink-based archive extraction in Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise lets a malicious plugin archive write arbitrary files - including an executable backend binary - outside the plugin installation directory, and that binary then runs with the Grafana server process's privileges, yielding remote code execution. Exploitation is gated on a Grafana operator installing a plugin from an attacker-influenced archive (via the plugin catalog, grafana-cli, GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS, or preinstall configuration), which is the UI:R component of the assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H vector; there is no unattended remote trigger against a running server. A key aggravating factor is that plugin archives are extracted before their signature is verified, so enforcing signed plugins does not mitigate this issue, and Grafana Enterprise carries the identical extraction code. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV; independent assessment rates this a genuine high-priority issue rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk paper cut.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix identified in Grafana's advisory at https://grafana.com/security/security-advisories/cve-2026-15815 - the provided intelligence does not include a confirmed fix version, so treat this as no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis and confirm the patched release directly with Grafana before planning an upgrade; upgrade both Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise, since the same extraction code is present in each. Because extraction precedes signature verification, do not rely on requiring signed plugins as a mitigation. Practical compensating controls until a patch is applied: eliminate or tightly gate every archive-ingestion path - remove GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS and preinstall plugin configuration from images and deployment manifests, and restrict who can run grafana-cli or trigger plugin-catalog installs - accepting that this reduces plugin deployment convenience and will block legitimate plugin provisioning workflows. Restrict filesystem permissions for the Grafana service account so it can write only its own data/plugin directories (not /etc, /usr, systemd unit paths, or other service-writable locations), and run Grafana as an unprivileged, containerized user with a read-only root filesystem plus a writable volume limited to the plugin/data directories; this bounds post-exploitation file writes and the dropped binary's reach, at the cost of some operational flexibility and possible plugin incompatibilities. Where plugins are essential, pre-stage and validate archives in an isolated sandbox before they reach production Grafana instances, and monitor the Grafana process for unexpected outbound connections and for newly created executables in or outside the plugins directory. Note that the impact ceiling is the privileges of the Grafana server process, so reducing those privileges is a meaningful hardening step.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a link-following (symlink traversal) defect, CWE-59, in the plugin archive extraction routine shared by Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:grafana:grafana_oss and cpe:2.3:a:grafana:grafana_enterprise). During extraction, the code resolves archive entries that are relative symbolic links without validating that the resolved path stays within the plugin installation directory. An attacker can chain multiple relative symlink entries so that a later file entry is written through the link and lands at an arbitrary filesystem path - classic 'zip-slip'-style escape extended to the symlink primitive. The attacker then places an executable backend binary outside the plugin directory; Grafana loads/executes plugin backend binaries as part of normal plugin operation, so the dropped payload executes with the privileges of the Grafana server process. Architecturally, the extraction stage runs before the plugin signature verification stage, which means the traversal write occurs regardless of whether the archive carries a valid signature - the integrity check is performed too late to be a barrier. The attack surface is the plugin supply chain plus the install paths that ingest archives: the plugin catalog install flow, the grafana-cli tool, the GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS environment variable, and preinstall configuration baked into images or deployments.

DescriptionCVE.org
Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise did not safely resolve symbolic links when extracting plugin archives. A crafted plugin archive can chain relative symbolic link entries to escape the plugin installation directory, writing arbitrary files and an executable backend binary outside that directory. The dropped executable runs with the privileges of the Grafana server process, resulting in remote code execution.
Plugin archives are extracted before their signature is verified, so a valid plugin signature does not prevent the write. An operator can therefore be affected by installing a plugin that appears legitimate, as well as by installing a plugin from an arbitrary archive using grafana-cli, the GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS environment variable, or preinstall configuration.
Grafana Enterprise is affected because it includes the same plugin extraction code as Grafana OSS.
Executive ViewAI
Grafana OSS and Grafana Enterprise are affected by a high-severity plugin archive extraction flaw that can allow a malicious plugin to execute code with the Grafana server process's privileges when an operator installs it. This creates a supply-chain risk for organizations running Grafana, because successful exploitation could impact the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Grafana service and any resources accessible to its server process. No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the issue requires an operator to install a plugin from an attacker-influenced archive.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or restrict plugin installation through the plugin catalog, grafana-cli, GF_INSTALL_PLUGINS, and preinstall configuration; restrict write access to plugin directories; run Grafana as a dedicated least-privilege account; validate plugin archives against trusted hashes; monitor plugin directories for unexpected executables; and segment network access. Do not rely on signed-plugin enforcement alone because extraction occurs before signature verification.
