MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires all of: (1) a WebDAV remote configured with an operator-set custom credential header via the --webdav-headers / headers option (e.g. X-Auth-Token or X-Api-Key) - standard Authorization/Cookie headers are NOT affected because Go's net/http strips those across registrable domains; (2) rclone in the affected range (1.56.0 through 1.75.1, fixed in v1.75.2); (3) the configured WebDAV server emitting a cross-host, non-downgrade 3xx redirect; and (4) the attacker being able to influence that redirect target via an open redirect, a compromised or malicious endpoint, or an on-path position on a cleartext or same-host hop. The leak occurs in the default configuration and does not depend on the opt-in auth_redirect option. Limiting factors: exploitation is confined to deployments that use custom-named credential headers and that encounter an attacker-controllable redirect, which is why CVSS rates attack complexity high (AC:H) with a present attack requirement (AT:P); no attacker authentication is required (PR:N). |
| Impact | The input CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, base 6.3, medium) is internally coherent with the described mechanism: network vector (AV:N), no attacker privileges (PR:N), no victim UI (UI:N), but elevated attack complexity (AC:H) and a present attack requirement (AT:P) because exploitation depends on the attacker being able to influence a cross-host, non-downgrade 3xx redirect - an open redirect, a compromised/malicious endpoint, or an on-path position on a cleartext or same-host hop. Impact is confidentiality-only and rated low (VC:L) because a single reusable credential header is disclosed; there is no direct integrity or availability impact. No EPSS score is provided in the input, and there is no CISA KEV listing, so there is no confirmed active exploitation - this is therefore not a KEV-driven emergency. A public PoC reference exists in the GHSA advisory (reproduction steps), but the advisory states the accompanying Go tests were reviewed against source rather than executed, so it is not verified as working exploit code. The vendor priority Decision label is this_month, consistent with a real but non-emergency issue that should be remediated promptly rather than paniced over. Net: a genuine credential-disclosure flaw gated behind a specific operator configuration (custom credential header) plus an attacker-influenced redirect, making it a moderate, targeted-exploitation risk rather than a mass-exploited critical. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator configures a WebDAV remote in rclone with a custom credential header (for example --webdav-headers "X-Auth-Token,SECRET") pointing at a third-party host. An attacker who controls or can influence that host's redirect response (open redirect, compromised endpoint, or on-path hop) causes the server to return a cross-host 3xx redirect; rclone follows it and re-sends the custom credential header verbatim to the attacker-controlled target, where it is captured and later replayed against the original WebDAV service. A public PoC reference with reproduction steps exists but is not verified as working exploit code; the high attack complexity reflects the need to influence the redirect. |

rclone's WebDAV backend (v1.56.0 through v1.75.1, fixed in v1.75.2) forwards operator-configured custom credential headers such as X-Auth-Token or X-Api-Key to a different host whenever the configured WebDAV server answers with a cross-host, non-downgrade HTTP 3xx redirect, disclosing a reusable credential to whoever controls or influences the redirect target. Only custom-named headers set via --webdav-headers are exposed, because Go's net/http strips Authorization, Www-Authenticate, Cookie and Cookie2 across registrable domains; the leak occurs in the default configuration and does not depend on the opt-in auth_redirect option. Exploitation requires an attacker-influenced redirect (open redirect, compromised or malicious endpoint, or on-path position on a cleartext or same-host hop), which is reflected in the assessed high attack complexity; a public PoC reference exists in the form of advisory reproduction steps, which were reviewed against the source trace but not verified as working exploit code, and no confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis. Vendor-released patch: v1.75.2.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to rclone v1.75.2, the first release containing the cross-host fix; the Go module github.com/rclone/rclone should be bumped to v1.75.2 or later, and the fix works by deleting each configured header on a host-leaving redirect, mirroring the earlier HTTP-backend change. Until upgrading, limit exposure by not pointing WebDAV remotes that carry secrets in custom-named headers at endpoints you do not control, since any server that can emit a cross-host 3xx redirect will receive those headers; the advisory does not document any alternative workaround beyond updating. Where the WebDAV service accepts standard HTTP authentication, note that credentials sent via the standard Authorization header are stripped by Go's net/http on cross-registrable-domain redirects and are therefore outside this specific leakage vector, whereas custom header names are not - this is a characteristic of the mechanism, not a vendor-recommended substitute for patching. Because the leak occurs in the default configuration and does not depend on the opt-in auth_redirect option, no configuration toggle removes it, and rotating any custom credential header that may have transited an untrusted or redirecting endpoint is advisable. Details are in the advisory at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/security/advisories/GHSA-3rqf-7h69-gg5v and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/rclone-1.56.0-before-1.75.2-webdav-credential-header-leak-on-redirect.

The WebDAV backend wires rest.RefuseHTTPSDowngradeRedirectFn for GET/Open and rest.PreserveMethodRedirectFn for PROPFIND; neither handler deletes any header, they only cap redirect counts and refuse an HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade. Operator headers supplied through the headers option (--webdav-headers) are installed on the backend's shared rest.Client via SetHeader and copied onto every outgoing request by (*Client).Call, so they ride along on the redirected hop. The separate transport-level strip in fshttp.Transport.RoundTrip that removes headers when a redirect leaves the host iterates only the global --header set bound to ci.Headers and therefore never sees per-client backend headers. Go's standard library sanitizes only four well-known names on cross-registrable-domain hops, so custom credential names such as X-Auth-Token or X-Api-Key are disclosed verbatim. Classified as CWE-200 with CWE-522 (and CWE-319 on a plaintext hop). This is an incomplete-fix and unfixed-sibling-backend condition relative to CVE-2026-88013 / GHSA-486v-q2wf-fp2r, which added a header-deleting checkRedirect to the HTTP backend, and GHSA-h4mf-4v27-hggj, which addressed only the WebDAV same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade case. No dedicated CWE is given beyond CWE-200; the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, with AC:H and AT:P reflecting dependence on an attacker-influenced cross-host redirect rather than an attacker-controlled request path.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
rclone from v1.56.0 before v1.75.2 contains an information disclosure vulnerability in the WebDAV backend that forwards operator-configured custom credential headers to different hosts on HTTP 3xx redirects. Attackers who control or influence a cross-host redirect can capture headers such as X-Auth-Token set via --webdav-headers and replay them against the original WebDAV service.
