| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a private key or PFX file was generated on the host using FreeRDP's winpr-makecert utility (versions 2.0.0 through 3.31.x), that this file resides on a multi-user Unix system, and that the attacker has an existing local low-privileged shell account (PR:L). The flaw is the key being written without owner-only (e.g. 0600) permissions, making it world-readable, and/or the PFX being protected only by winpr-makecert's hard-coded default password. Limiting factors: no remote or network path (AV:L), the victim must actively have used winpr-makecert to produce the key material (UI:P), and single-user or properly-umask'd hosts where no such keys exist are not exploitable - this does not affect default FreeRDP client/server RDP sessions that never invoke the certificate tool. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely medium-severity, not a high-priority, issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) confirms the flaw is exploitable only by a local, already-authenticated low-privileged user (PR:L) on a shared host, with some passive user interaction (UI:P) - there is no network reachability. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public proof-of-concept is present in the provided intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The combination of a local-only attack surface, the requirement that a victim actually used winpr-makecert to produce keys, and the absence of any exploitation telemetry means this should be remediated through normal patch cycles rather than treated as an emergency. The high confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H) reflects the value of a stolen private key - it enables impersonation/MITM - but that payoff only materializes on multi-user Unix hosts where such keys exist and are left world-readable. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a shared Unix server, an administrator generates TLS certificates with FreeRDP's winpr-makecert, which writes the unencrypted private key (or a PFX protected only by a hard-coded default password) without owner-only file permissions. A separate low-privileged local user simply reads the world-readable key file, or opens the PFX with the known default password, and exfiltrates the private key to impersonate the service or decrypt traffic. No public proof-of-concept is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Insecure file permissions in FreeRDP's winpr-makecert certificate-generation utility (versions 2.0.0 through 3.31.x) cause newly generated private keys to be written without owner-only modes, so any local account on a multi-user Unix host can read them; exported PFX bundles are additionally protected only by the tool's hard-coded default password, so possession of the file is effectively equivalent to possession of the key. Exploitation requires an attacker who already holds a low-privileged local shell (PR:L) on a host where an administrator or user has actually run winpr-makecert, and it does not touch normal FreeRDP client or server RDP sessions that never invoke the tool - there is no public exploit code identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV). Impact is rated medium (CWE-732 permission assignment; CVSS 6.8 per the vendor scoring, with our independent assessment at CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), because a stolen key enables credential-grade impersonation or decryption of RDP TLS traffic rather than a self-propagating compromise.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: FreeRDP 3.32.0 - upgrade to 3.32.0 or later, which corrects the permission handling in winpr-makecert and removes reliance on the hard-coded default PFX password; see advisory GHSA-2jfv-j3wx-5cg4 (https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-2jfv-j3wx-5cg4) for release details. Patching alone does not revoke already-exposed secrets, so remediation must include key rotation: locate artifacts produced by winpr-makecert (typically private keys and .pfx/.p12 bundles in build or config directories owned by the tool's runner), confirm their modes with stat, and delete or regenerate any that were world-readable or group-readable. Where regeneration is impractical, chmod 600 on the key and a re-encrypt of the PFX with a strong operator-supplied password reduce exposure, but both are compensating controls - the key must be treated as compromised if it was readable during the vulnerable window, since a local user could have copied it silently. As a durable control, run the utility with a strict umask (0077) or inside a directory tree not readable by other accounts, and restrict shell access on RDP infrastructure hosts, noting the trade-off that tightening host access can disrupt shared build or admin workflows. Rotating RDP TLS certificates will require redistributing trust anchors or updating certificate pinning on clients, and it invalidates previously captured or pinned sessions; hosts with no winpr-makecert-generated material need no action.

Technical ContextAI · show details
WinPR is FreeRDP's portable reimplementation of the Windows API layer, and winpr-makecert is the utility that emulates Microsoft's makecert to produce self-signed X.509 certificates and RSA private keys used for RDP TLS listeners and client authentication. The root cause is CWE-732 (Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource): the key material is written to disk without owner-only (0600) modes, relying on defaults or the caller's umask, so on multi-user Unix systems the unencrypted private key ends up world-readable. The PFX/PKCS#12 export path compounds this by encrypting the container with a hard-coded default password rather than prompting for a user-supplied one, meaning the file's confidentiality depends entirely on filesystem permissions that were not set. This is a local, post-generation exposure: the CVSS 4.0 base of 6.8 reflects AV:L/PR:L with UI:P (the victim, not the attacker, must have run the tool), while the CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:freerdp:freerdp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates the entire FreeRDP product line is version-scoped rather than a single component, so any 2.x/3.x deployment between 2.0.0 and 3.31.x that used the bundled utility is in scope. There is no network attack path and no memory-safety component; the flaw is purely a confidentiality/integrity exposure of a cryptographic secret that should never have been world-readable.

2DescriptionCVE.org
FreeRDP from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an insecure permission vulnerability in winpr-makecert that creates unencrypted private keys without owner-only file modes. Local users on multi-user Unix hosts can read world-readable key files or open PFX files protected by the hard-coded default password to steal private keys.
