MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Ghost Administrator (PR:H) who can install or upload a custom theme; exploitation works by abusing how Ghost loads a theme's translation (i18n) files, using a crafted theme to trigger path traversal into attacker-controlled code. Affected versions are 6.10.3 up to (but not including) 6.64.0 of Ghost (tryghost/ghost). Limiting factors: the Administrator role requirement sharply narrows the attacker population to trusted/compromised admin accounts; no end-user interaction is needed beyond the attacker's own admin actions; deployments that restrict theme uploads or run a single trusted admin face substantially reduced exposure. |
| Impact | This is a high-severity but access-gated issue, not a mass-exploitation priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.2) scores network reach and full CIA impact (arbitrary code execution), but the decisive limiter is PR:H - exploitation requires an authenticated Administrator, the highest-trust role in Ghost. An attacker who already holds Administrator can typically perform damaging actions anyway, so this primarily raises risk as a privilege-to-RCE escalation (moving from application-admin to OS-level code execution on the host) and as a post-compromise vector following credential theft or a rogue/over-privileged admin account. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided; exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent - there is no network-vs-local or auth conflict to flag. Net assessment: patch promptly on multi-admin or managed-hosting Ghost deployments, but this is lower urgency than an unauthenticated RCE given the Administrator prerequisite. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Ghost Administrator uploads or installs a crafted theme whose translation (i18n) files use path-traversal sequences to make Ghost load and execute an attacker-controlled file, yielding arbitrary code execution on the server (CWE-22). No public exploit code was identified in the provided data; exploitation requires Administrator privileges and the network-accessible admin interface (AV:N/AC:L). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
Authenticated Ghost Administrators on versions 6.10.3 through 6.63.x can achieve remote code execution by installing a crafted theme that abuses how Ghost resolves theme translation (i18n) files, allowing path traversal into attacker-controlled code. Exploitation requires a high-privilege Administrator account (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.2) and no victim interaction beyond the attacker's own admin actions; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV). Because the attacker population is limited to trusted or already-compromised admin accounts rather than anonymous remote users, this is a high-severity but access-gated issue rather than a mass-exploitation priority.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Ghost to 6.64.0 or later, which is the version referenced by the vendor advisory GHSA-jj74-hc2q-xrvm and published at https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/releases/tag/v6.64.0; the underlying code change is commit d2f498694be549074dd5817fd0e8a1371b65df02, which restricts i18n resolution to the packaged @tryghost/i18n registry instead of theme-supplied paths. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to treat theme installation as a privileged, audited operation: disable or tightly restrict custom theme upload/activation in the Admin API and UI so that only a small, trusted set of accounts can install themes, and review all installed themes for unexpected translation/locale files that reference paths outside the theme directory - the trade-off is reduced editorial flexibility and added review overhead for legitimate theme changes. Because the prerequisite is a full Administrator (PR:H), hardening admin authentication (enforced MFA, removal of dormant admin accounts, alerting on new theme installs and on i18n/locale file changes in the theme directory, network-level restriction of /ghost/ admin access to trusted IPs) directly shrinks the attack surface at the cost of operational friction for administrators. Rotating admin credentials and reviewing server-side file integrity after any suspected theme tampering is advisable, since a successful exploit yields code execution under the Ghost process account. No other vendor-supplied workaround is documented in the available references; note that blocking the theme upload endpoint alone does not protect against themes already present on disk, so file review must accompany endpoint restriction.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Ghost is a Node.js-based content management system whose theming subsystem loads internationalization (i18n) translation files alongside a theme's templates and assets. The vulnerability is a path traversal (CWE-22) in the code that resolves those theme translation files: because the resolved path is not adequately constrained to the theme's own directory, a crafted theme can reference files outside the intended translation directory and pull in attacker-controlled content that is subsequently executed by the server-side Node.js runtime, crossing from data loading into arbitrary code execution. The upstream fix commit d2f498694be549074dd5817fd0e8a1371b65df02 reworks how the internal @tryghost/i18n package is resolved - moving the locale/registry entry points into a static ESM registry that bundlers resolve via explicit source resolve conditions (defaultClientConditions in the Vite configs) and removing the ambient declare module '@tryghost/i18n' shims - so that i18n assets come only from the packaged registry rather than from arbitrary paths reachable through a theme. The change also carries accompanying unit tests for portal, signup-form and sodo-search i18n behaviour (including locale fallback to English and RTL direction handling), confirming the fix hardens the shared translation-loading pipeline rather than a single call site. Affected CPE metadata identifies tryghost:ghost as the impacted product family.
