| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Ghost staff account of any role, including the lowest-privilege Contributor, on Ghost versions 6.56.0 through 6.66.x (fixed in 6.67.0). The attacker must be able to create a bookmark card pointing to a website they control that serves a crafted SVG, which is then processed by Ghost's bundled image-processing library. Limiting factors: there is no anonymous/unauthenticated path despite the vendor's PR:N vector - a valid staff login (or a compromised/invited Contributor) is mandatory, and instances already upgraded to 6.67.0 are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a credible, high-priority RCE in Ghost CMS (CWE-94 code injection) achievable by any staff user down to the low-privilege Contributor role, yielding full C:H/I:H/A:H impact on the server. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R, 8.8) conflicts with the description: it encodes PR:N (unauthenticated), yet the text explicitly requires an authenticated staff/Contributor account, so the real-world privilege requirement is PR:L, not PR:N - treat the 'unauthenticated' implication of the vendor vector as inaccurate and verify with the GHSA advisory. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. Net: a genuinely serious post-authentication RCE that insider or compromised-Contributor accounts can weaponize, but the authentication barrier and absence of KEV/POC signals place it below internet-wide, unauthenticated mass-exploitation threats; the main unknown is real-world exploitation probability since EPSS is missing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds or phishes a low-privilege Ghost Contributor account creates a bookmark card pointing at a website they control, which serves a malicious SVG. When Ghost's bundled image-processing library handles that SVG, attacker-supplied content is executed as code, giving arbitrary command execution on the Ghost server. No public proof-of-concept was provided, so exploitation would require independent development against the vulnerable SVG-handling path in versions 6.56.0 through 6.66.x. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
Remote code execution in Ghost CMS 6.56.0 through 6.66.x lets any authenticated staff user - including the lowest-privilege Contributor role - execute arbitrary commands on the Ghost server by creating a bookmark card that points to an attacker-controlled website serving a crafted SVG. The root cause is a code-injection flaw (CWE-94) in the SVG handling path of an image-processing library bundled with Ghost, and successful exploitation yields full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the host. Exploitation requires a valid Ghost staff login (the vendor vector claims PR:N, but our assessed vector of PR:L/UI:N is the accurate prerequisite), and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Ghost 6.67.0 is the fixed release.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 6.67.0 - upgrade every Ghost instance to 6.67.0 or later, which is the only complete fix, and verify the running version via the admin panel or CLI after upgrading. Where immediate upgrade is impossible, impose compensating controls in this order of effectiveness: revoke or suspend Contributor and other low-privilege staff accounts and disable contributor self-registration/invitations, accepting the editorial workflow disruption that follows; disable or block the bookmark card feature (including its oEmbed/URL-preview endpoint) at the reverse proxy so that user-supplied URLs are never fetched server-side, at the cost of losing link previews in posts; and harden the image pipeline by rejecting or stripping SVG from any fetched or uploaded media (e.g., blocking image/svg+xml at the proxy and configuring the media library to refuse SVG), which may break legitimate SVG logo usage. Run the Ghost process as a low-privileged, non-root container user with outbound network egress restricted to only the destinations the site genuinely needs, so that a successful injection cannot trivially reach internal services - this limits blast radius but does not prevent the initial command execution. Monitor Ghost application logs for unexpected outbound fetches to unknown hosts and for child processes spawned by Node, and treat any Contributor-created bookmark card referencing an unfamiliar domain as a potential attempt. Consult https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/security/advisories/GHSA-788w-68h3-cvxp for the vendor's official guidance and any updated release notes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The defect is CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code / code injection) inside the SVG parsing and rendering path of an image-processing library that Ghost bundles and invokes server-side. When a user creates a bookmark card, Ghost fetches the target page and processes referenced imagery - including SVG - on the server rather than in the browser, so attacker-supplied markup reaches a parser that can be driven into executing arbitrary commands in the Node.js process context. Because the sink is Ghost's own server process, the impact is complete (C:H/I:H/A:H) and not confined to the rendering of a single card. Per the CPE cpe:2.3:a:tryghost:ghost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* the product is Ghost broadly, but the vulnerable window is specifically 6.56.0 through 6.66.x, which is the range in which the affected bundled library version shipped; 6.67.0 carries the fix. Note the scoring disagreement: the vendor advisory's CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R vector implies no authentication and a user-interaction step, while our assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) treats a staff account as mandatory and the malicious bookmark card itself as the sole attacker action. The practical effect is that a Contributor - the least-trusted authenticated role, typically granted to guest authors and freelancers - is sufficient, which materially widens the pool of potential attackers on any multi-author or contributor-enabled instance.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Ghost is a Node.js content management system. From 6.56.0 until 6.67.0, an image processing library bundled with Ghost contained a vulnerability in its SVG handling. Any staff user, including Contributors, could create a bookmark card for an attacker-controlled website, resulting in arbitrary commands being run on the Ghost server. This issue is fixed in version 6.67.0.

Executive ViewAI
Ghost CMS versions 6.56.0 through 6.66.x are affected by a high-severity remote code execution flaw that lets an authenticated staff user, including a low-privilege Contributor, execute arbitrary commands on the Ghost server. This means a compromised or malicious content account could take over the publishing platform, risking data confidentiality, content integrity, and service availability. Leadership should care because Contributor accounts are often numerous and less tightly controlled, and successful exploitation can lead to full host compromise rather than just application-level impact; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
Apply vendor patch (Ghost 6.67.0).
