| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an unprivileged local account on an affected host (OmniOS r151020 or later, or SmartOS, prior to the fix) with the ability to send door requests to the ipmgmtd door; the attacker specifically does NOT need the solaris.network.interface.config authorization, and the crash is triggered precisely on the authorization-FAILURE error path via a config-modifying command such as IPMGMT_CMD_RESETIF. Limiting factors: exploitation is LOCAL only (no network vector), needs a valid local login, and impacts only availability of IP interface management (no data exposure or code execution). Notably, upstream illumos-gate is NOT affected because the offending early ucred_free() was introduced by OmniOS commit 4c170900 (2014) for lx-branded zones, so vanilla illumos distributions outside this lineage are out of scope. |
| Impact | Signals point to a moderate, bounded availability risk rather than a top-tier priority. The CVSS 4.0 base of 5.4 is driven entirely by VA:H (availability of the vulnerable system) with VC:N/VI:N - there is no confidentiality or integrity impact and no code execution; the worst outcome is denial of IP interface management. The vector's AV:L and PR:L confirm this is a LOCAL, authenticated (low-privilege) attack: the attacker must already hold an account/shell on the host, which sharply limits exposure versus a network-reachable flaw. AC:L and AT:N mean the trigger is trivial and reliable once local access exists. The vector carries E:P (Exploit Maturity = Proof-of-Concept), suggesting a PoC-grade trigger is understood, but no standalone exploit link is provided. EPSS is not supplied and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV - consistent with a low-glamour local DoS unlikely to see mass exploitation. Net: this matters most in MULTI-TENANT illumos deployments (non-global/lx-branded zones, SmartOS/Triton hosts) where untrusted local users can degrade host IP configuration management; on single-administrator systems the practical risk is low. Gaps: no EPSS, no KEV, and only a vendor-claimed PoC maturity metric rather than published exploit code. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unprivileged local user on an OmniOS (r151020+) or SmartOS host - for example a tenant inside a shared zone - who lacks the solaris.network.interface.config authorization sends a configuration-modifying door request such as IPMGMT_CMD_RESETIF to the ipmgmtd door. ipmgmtd frees the caller credential once after reading the UID and again on the authorization-failure error path, triggering a double free (CWE-415) that aborts the daemon. Repeating the request drives svc:/network/ip-interface-management into maintenance, blocking further IP interface configuration; the CVSS vector claims proof-of-concept maturity (E:P) though no standalone exploit is linked. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Denial of service in the ipmgmtd IP management daemon on OmniOS r151020 and later and on SmartOS: an unprivileged local user can abort the daemon by sending a configuration-modifying door request, such as IPMGMT_CMD_RESETIF, even though the request is correctly rejected for lacking the solaris.network.interface.config authorization. The crash stems from a double free (CWE-415) in ipmgmt_handler()'s authorization-failure path, and repeated requests push the svc:/network/ip-interface-management service into maintenance, leaving the host unable to configure IP interfaces. Impact is availability-only (no confidentiality or integrity effect), exploitation requires a valid local account (CVSS 3.1 base 5.4; assessed A:H with PR:L), the defect is not present in upstream illumos-gate, and it is not confirmed as actively exploited (not in CISA KEV); the CVSS 4.0 vector records exploit maturity as proof-of-concept (E:P) rather than active exploitation, and vendor fixes exist as downstream commits.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix: on OmniOS, update to a build that incorporates commit 670d853f335203ce8a66126cdbb25bfdba973036 in the omniosorg/illumos-omnios tree, which relocates the single ucred_free() call out of the early-read path and onto the correct exit path; note that a released patched build number is not independently confirmed, so verify against the vendor's advisory before certifying closure. SmartOS users must track the corresponding TritonDataCenter/illumos-joyent fix, which is still listed as commit TBD and therefore not yet available at the time of analysis. Until a patched build is deployed, the most direct compensating control is to permit the service to restart rather than stay failed, using SMF to clear maintenance state and restart svc:/network/ip-interface-management (svcadm clear/restart) or a monitoring agent that detects the daemon's aborts, accepting that each crash still causes a brief loss of IP interface configuration and that a determined local user can re-trigger it. A second option is to reduce the population of unprivileged local accounts able to open the ipmgmtd door (disabling unused logins, restricting shell access), which lowers exposure but does not eliminate the bug and degrades multi-user hosts. A third, higher-trade-off option is to grant solaris.network.interface.config to trusted accounts: the double free only executes on the authorization-failure branch, so authorized callers take the success path, but this hands those accounts real interface-configuration privileges and is not appropriate as a general mitigation. Upstream illumos-gate deployments require no action because the offending early free was never present there.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ipmgmtd is the Illumos/OmniOS IP interface management daemon, which exposes an IPC endpoint (a Solaris "door") handled by ipmgmt_handler() in usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/ipmgmtd/ipmgmt_door.c. For each door call the handler reads the caller's credential with door_ucred() and extracts the user ID with ucred_geteuid(); the vulnerable code frees that credential object with ucred_free() immediately after reading the UID and then frees the same pointer a second time on the error path taken when the privilege check (solaris.network.interface.config) fails. This is a classic CWE-415 double free: the second ucred_free() operates on already-released memory, corrupting the heap and aborting the daemon. The early free was introduced in 2014 by OmniOS commit 4c170900 to support lx-branded zones and therefore exists only in the OmniOS/SmartOS lineage, not in upstream illumos-gate; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:omnios:omnios:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a wildcard placeholder while the description scopes the bug to OmniOS r151020 and later plus SmartOS before the fix. Because the bug sits on the authorization-failure branch, the attacker deliberately does not need the network-configuration privilege; sending an unprivileged config-modifying command is what drives execution into the vulnerable path.

DescriptionCVE.org
A double free in the IP management daemon (ipmgmtd) of OmniOS and SmartOS allows a local user to crash the daemon. When authorizing a door request that modifies interface configuration, ipmgmt_handler() in usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/ipmgmtd/ipmgmt_door.c frees the caller's credential with ucred_free() immediately after reading the user ID, and frees it a second time on the error path if the authorization check fails. An unprivileged local user who does not hold the solaris.network.interface.config authorization can send such a request, for example IPMGMT_CMD_RESETIF, to the ipmgmtd door, causing ipmgmtd to abort; repeated requests place the svc:/network/ip-interface-management service into maintenance, preventing IP interface configuration. The early free was introduced in 2014 to support lx-branded zones (OmniOS commit 4c170900) and is not present in upstream illumos-gate. It affects OmniOS r151020 and later, and SmartOS, prior to the fix.
