| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) an authenticated local user account on the host - the nwam_door at /etc/svc/volatile/nwam/nwam_door is world-accessible to all local users, so no special privileges or group membership are needed; and (2) the svc:/network/physical:nwam (Network Auto-Magic) service must be ENABLED, which is explicitly NOT the illumos default - hosts using fixed/manual network configuration do not run nwamd and are entirely unexposed. Affected versions are any illumos distribution built before illumos-gate commit 0f1064d9 (the flaw dates to commit 6ba597c5 in 2010). No remote access, no user interaction, and no second victim are involved; the limiting factors are the local-access requirement and the non-default service state. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue despite its CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference classification, and the signals are internally consistent. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) correctly reflects that exploitation requires an authenticated local user (PR:L) rather than remote network access, and the only impact is availability (VA:H) - there is no confidentiality or integrity loss (VC:N/VI:N). The vector carries E:P (Proof-of-Concept exploit maturity), and the description itself functions as a reproduction recipe (an unprivileged door_call() with no argument data), so working exploit code is trivially derivable; however, there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was supplied, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - consistent with a local-only denial-of-service against a non-default service. The most important risk-limiting fact is that nwamd only runs when svc:/network/physical:nwam is enabled, which is NOT the default illumos configuration, so most deployments are not exposed at all. Net: a real, confirmed local DoS worth patching on systems that actually run NWAM, but not an emergency and not relevant to default-configured hosts. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unprivileged local user on an illumos/OmniOS host that has the NWAM service enabled issues a door_call() to /etc/svc/volatile/nwam/nwam_door with no argument data; because nwamd_door_switch() writes to the caller's request structure before null-checking it, the daemon dereferences a NULL pointer and crashes. The description provides a complete reproduction method (proof-of-concept per CVSS E:P), and repeating the call drives svc:/network/physical:nwam into the maintenance state, disabling automatic network configuration. |

NULL pointer dereference in the illumos Network Auto-Magic daemon (nwamd) allows any local user to crash the daemon - and, by repeating the call, to drive the svc:/network/physical:nwam service into maintenance so automatic network configuration stops - by issuing a door_call() with no argument data to the world-accessible nwam_door at /etc/svc/volatile/nwam/nwam_door. Every illumos distribution built before illumos-gate commit 0f1064d97f1a43778ddf87d4e438b99872aed1a0 is affected (the flaw dates to the 2010 commit 6ba597c5), and OmniOS is explicitly named in the affected-product CPE data, though exposure is materially limited because nwamd only runs when svc:/network/physical:nwam is enabled, which is not the illumos default. Impact is availability-only (CVSS 4.0 base 5.4; assessed CVSS 3.1 AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) with no confidentiality or integrity loss; the CVSS 4.0 vector rates exploit maturity as Proof-of-Concept (E:P), while the issue is not in CISA KEV and no active exploitation is confirmed.
RemediationAI
Patch available per vendor: the upstream fix is illumos-gate commit 0f1064d97f1a43778ddf87d4e438b99872aed1a0 (see https://illumos.org/issues/18495 and the commit at https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/commit/0f1064d97f1a43778ddf87d4e438b99872aed1a0), so update or rebuild from illumos-gate at or after that commit; specific patched release version numbers for downstream distributions such as OmniOS are not stated in the available data, so downstream users should install the first vendor build that includes this commit and confirm it with their distribution's advisory. As a compensating control, disable the non-default Network Auto-Magic service with 'svcadm disable network/physical:nwam' (or avoid enabling it) - nwamd only runs when that service is enabled, so hosts on fixed or manual network configuration are not exposed; the trade-off is loss of automatic network configuration, requiring static/manual interface setup and, on systems that depend on NWAM for Wi-Fi or dynamic profile changes, additional manual administration. Because the door at /etc/svc/volatile/nwam/nwam_door is world-accessible by design, filesystem permission tightening is not a viable mitigation and would break legitimate libnwam clients; the more durable compensating controls are limiting the number of local accounts (the attack needs only an unprivileged local login), monitoring SMF state for svc:/network/physical:nwam repeatedly entering maintenance, and clearing that maintenance state with 'svcadm clear network/physical:nwam' after applying the patch to restore automatic network configuration.

Technical ContextAI · show details
nwamd is the Network Auto-Magic daemon that performs automatic network interface configuration on illumos systems, and it exposes a Solaris doors IPC endpoint, /etc/svc/volatile/nwam/nwam_door, that is accessible to all local users. In the vulnerable function nwamd_door_switch() in usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/nwamd/door_if.c, the caller-supplied request pointer (argp) is written to before the code verifies that a request was actually supplied and before any caller credential check, so a door_call() carrying zero-length argument data dereferences NULL inside the daemon process - the CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference class. The identical missing-validation pattern existed in libnwam_backend.c:nwam_backend_door_server(), which set req->nwbda_result before testing arg_size, meaning both door servers shared the faulty argument-validation logic. The fix commit 0f1064d97f1a43778ddf87d4e438b99872aed1a0 (issue 18495) adds an explicit guard that returns an empty door_return(NULL, 0, NULL, 0) when argp is NULL or arg_size is smaller than sizeof(nwamd_door_arg_t), and applies the same guard to the libnwam backend, effectively adding both the missing validation and the missing authorization boundary. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) confirms this is a local, low-complexity, low-privilege attack with no user interaction and availability-only impact; the flaw has existed since illumos-gate commit 6ba597c5 in 2010, so any build predating the fix carries it.

DescriptionCVE.org
A NULL pointer dereference in the illumos Network Auto-Magic daemon (nwamd) allows a local user to crash the daemon. nwamd_door_switch() in usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/nwamd/door_if.c writes to the caller's request structure before checking that a request was supplied, and before checking the caller's credentials. Because the nwamd door at /etc/svc/volatile/nwam/nwam_door is accessible to all local users, an unprivileged user can issue a door_call() with no argument data to crash nwamd; repeated calls place the svc:/network/physical:nwam service into maintenance, stopping automatic network configuration. nwamd runs only when svc:/network/physical:nwam is enabled, which is not the default. The flaw has existed since 2010 (illumos-gate commit 6ba597c5), and affects any illumos distribution prior to illumos-gate commit 0f1064d9.
