MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a local, authenticated (PR:L) account in any zone on an illumos-based host (illumos-gate or OmniOS) running zonestatd, the default zones statistics daemon; the zonestatd door is accessible to all users in every zone by default, so no special configuration is needed to reach the vulnerable ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE handler. Exploitation is LIMITED to hosts running affected versions (prior to illumos-gate commit 865b58d2), requires local access rather than network access, and yields only transient zonestat disruption and a zone-existence timing oracle - not persistence, privilege gain, or data theft. Multi-tenant deployments where untrusted users hold zone-local accounts are the realistic exposure; single-tenant or single-admin hosts face negligible risk. |
| Impact | This is a low-priority, low-real-risk issue despite being a genuine authorization flaw. All signals align toward minor impact: the vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 1.9 (Low), the vector is local (AV:L) with low attack complexity and requires some privileges (PR:L - i.e. an authenticated local account in any zone), and the impact metrics are confined to low confidentiality and low availability (VC:L/VI:N/VA:L) with no scope/subsequent-system impact (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N). CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) matches the description precisely: zsd_server() handles ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE without checking caller credentials. The CVSS 4.0 exploit-maturity metric E:P indicates proof-of-concept-level exploitability rather than active exploitation; there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score provided, so widespread opportunistic exploitation is not indicated. The realistic worst case is transient denial of zonestat service in a target zone plus an information-disclosure side channel (timing reveals whether a zone ID is running) - not code execution, privilege escalation, or data compromise. No signals conflict: the local vector, low privileges, and low impact are mutually consistent. Net: a legitimate defense-in-depth fix for multi-tenant illumos/OmniOS operators, but not an urgent patch for most environments. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unprivileged local user inside any zone on a shared illumos/OmniOS host connects to the globally-accessible zonestatd door and sends a ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE command with an arbitrary target zone ID, which zonestatd processes without verifying the caller came from the global zone with PRIV_SYS_CONFIG. This forces zonestatd to re-create its door file in the targeted zone, causing concurrent zonestat requests there to fail while the file is replaced, and the command's response timing also lets the attacker enumerate which zone IDs correspond to running zones. The flaw is proof-of-concept level (CVSS E:P) and requires only a local authenticated account, but exploitation is entirely local with low privileges. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Local users holding an unprivileged account in any zone on an illumos-based host can send an unauthorized ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE request to the zonestatd door, forcing the daemon to re-create its door file in an arbitrary zone so that new zonestat requests in that zone can fail while the file is replaced, and using the command's response timing as an oracle for whether a given zone ID is currently running. The root cause is a missing authorization check (CWE-862) in zsd_server() in usr/src/cmd/zonestat/zonestatd/zonestatd.c, a gap that has existed since illumos-gate commit efd4c9b6 in 2010 and affects illumos-gate and OmniOS builds prior to illumos-gate commit 865b58d2; a vendor fix is available, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. Impact is confined to transient disruption of zone statistics collection plus a zone-existence oracle - no privilege gain, persistence, or data theft - so this is a low-priority issue for single-tenant or single-admin hosts and only a modest concern in multi-tenant deployments where untrusted users hold zone-local accounts.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: illumos-gate commit 865b58d24a0f1a31c838bffc3a7193d3345fe5ba, which adds door_ucred()-based validation requiring the caller to be in the global zone and to hold PRIV_SYS_CONFIG before processing ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE; administrators should update to an illumos-gate revision at or after this commit (details at https://illumos.org/issues/18493 and https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/commit/865b58d24a0f1a31c838bffc3a7193d3345fe5ba), and OmniOS users should install the OmniOS release built from that revision or later. Because the exploit requires only an unprivileged local account in any zone, the most effective compensating control pending upgrade is to prevent untrusted users from holding accounts inside zones on the affected host - restricting zone-local logins to trusted administrators and removing shared or multi-tenant zone accounts eliminates the attack path at the cost of reduced multi-tenant flexibility. Where zonestat telemetry is not consumed, disabling the zonestat service (for example via svcadm disable on the zonestat service instance) removes the door endpoint entirely, with the trade-off that per-zone resource accounting and any monitoring or capacity tooling that depends on zonestat output will stop working; this is only advisable on hosts that do not rely on that data. Note that network-level controls are ineffective here because the door is a local IPC endpoint, and the residual risk of an unpatched host is limited to transient zonestat disruption and the zone-existence timing oracle rather than privilege escalation or data compromise.

Technical ContextAI · show details
zonestatd is the illumos zones statistics daemon that aggregates per-zone resource utilization; it exposes itself over a door, illumos's file-descriptor-like local RPC mechanism, whose door file is reachable by all users in every zone by default. The door server routine zsd_server() dispatches commands such as ZSD_CMD_CONNECT (returning a stat-server door descriptor to callers holding the PRIV_PROC_INFO privilege) and ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE, which is intended to be invoked only by zoneadmd - the zone administration daemon running in the global zone - to register newly attached zones. In the vulnerable code the ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE branch called zsd_fattach_zone() without ever inspecting the caller's credentials, so any local process could invoke it with an arbitrary zone ID and cause zonestatd to recreate its door file in that zone, producing a brief window in which zonestat requests from the target zone fail; the differing handling time also leaks whether the supplied zone ID corresponds to a running zone. This is a textbook CWE-862 missing authorization defect: the command handler assumed the transport (a door intended for zoneadmd) implied authorization rather than validating it. The upstream fix restructures the handler into a switch statement, calls door_ucred() to obtain the caller's credentials, and requires both ucred_getzoneid() == GLOBAL_ZONEID and membership of the effective privilege set in PRIV_SYS_CONFIG before attaching a zone, returning ZSD_STATUS_PERMISSION otherwise; the existing PRIV_PROC_INFO gate on the connect path is preserved and folded into the same structure. The flaw class is authorization, not memory safety, and exploitation requires local code execution as an unprivileged user rather than network access.

DescriptionCVE.org
A missing authorization check in the illumos zones statistics daemon (zonestatd) allows a local user in any zone to disrupt zonestat in other zones and to determine which zones are running. The zonestatd door server procedure, zsd_server() in usr/src/cmd/zonestat/zonestatd/zonestatd.c, handles the ZSD_CMD_NEW_ZONE command, which is intended to be sent by zoneadmd, without checking the caller's credentials. Because the zonestatd door is accessible to all users in every zone, an unprivileged user can send this command with an arbitrary zone ID, causing zonestatd to re-create its door file in that zone, so that new zonestat requests in that zone can fail while the file is replaced. The time taken to handle the command also reveals whether a given zone ID belongs to a running zone. The flaw has existed since 2010 (illumos-gate commit efd4c9b6), and affects any illumos distribution prior to illumos-gate commit 865b58d2.
