1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the attacker to already possess a valid operator.read Gateway token for OpenClaw; with that token they call the mcp.app.view method to mint a standalone MCP App ticket and redeem it at the /__openclaw__/mcp-app/view endpoint to invoke tools/call operations. The flaw only manifests when the originating run has an App-tool grant (allowedAppToolNames defined and not readOnly), since the pre-fix supportsStandaloneToolOperations check validated only the run's allowlist and never the ticket issuer's own Gateway scope. Exploitation is limited to holders of a read-scoped token (no unauthenticated access) and affects OpenClaw versions before 2026.9.4; no user interaction is required.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity authorization flaw, not an overhyped high-CVSS issue. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N) scores 6.0 and is internally consistent with the description: exploitation requires an already-issued operator.read token (PR:L, so authenticated), is network-reachable, but has an attack requirement (AT:P) reflecting the two-step ticket-issue-then-redeem sequence. Impact is integrity-only (VI:H) - the attacker gains the ability to invoke state-changing MCP App tools they should not reach - with no confidentiality (VC:N) or availability (VA:N) impact, so the 6.0 is well-calibrated rather than inflated. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or automatable exploitation; this is a privilege-boundary weakness that a legitimate low-scope operator could abuse rather than an internet-wide unauthenticated RCE. The single most important limiting factor is that the attacker must already hold a valid operator.read token, which confines the threat to insiders or attackers who have already compromised a read-scoped credential.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker holding only an operator.read Gateway token calls the mcp.app.view method to obtain a standalone MCP App ticket, which (before the fix) was issued without recording that the requester lacked operator.write scope. They then redeem that ticket against the /__openclaw__/mcp-app/view endpoint and issue tools/call requests to invoke state-changing App tools, effectively escalating from read-only to write. No public exploit code is identified in the input, but the fix commit and PR diff clearly demonstrate the exploitable code path.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

OpenClaw versions before 2026.9.4 contain an incorrect authorization flaw (CWE-863) in the mcp.app.view method that lets a holder of a read-scoped operator.read Gateway token mint a standalone MCP App ticket and redeem it at the /__openclaw__/mcp-app/view endpoint to invoke state-changing MCP tools through tools/call - operations that should require operator.write scope. Exploitation is authenticated (PR:L) and remote, requires the originating run to carry an App-tool grant (allowedAppToolNames defined and not readOnly), and needs no user interaction; the primary impact is integrity (VI:H) with no confidentiality or availability loss per the assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N vector. There is no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation identified at time of analysis, and an independent assessment rates this as a genuine but moderate-severity authorization bypass rather than a high-severity emergency.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to OpenClaw 2026.9.4 (release notes at https://docs.openclaw.ai/releases/2026.9.4), which can be correlated with the upstream fix in PR https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/142661 and commit 3bd8ec2b39b5f9e80aef0973f7d17eadc745b8f8. The patch binds a toolOperationsAuthorized flag into the signed standalone ticket and requires it - together with the originating run's live allowedAppToolNames grant and a non-readOnly view - before tools/call is dispatched, so any previously issued read-scoped ticket can no longer be redeemed for state-changing tool operations; operators should assume tickets minted before the upgrade are untrusted and restart the Gateway so short-lived grants are reissued under the new binding. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to stop minting or distributing operator.read Gateway tokens to untrusted principals, since the flaw is only reachable by an authenticated read-scoped holder - but this is disruptive if your automation depends on those tokens and does not remove the underlying confused-deputy condition for tokens already issued. A narrower mitigation is to ensure MCP App runs are configured as readOnly or without allowedAppToolNames, which removes the prerequisite grant and makes the standalone tool-operations path fall through the supportsStandaloneToolOperations check; the trade-off is that legitimate MCP App tool invocation is disabled for those runs. Disabling or network-restricting the /__openclaw__/mcp-app/view endpoint (for example, allowing only trusted CIDRs or the internal UI origin) also blocks redemption but will break the standalone MCP App host for legitimate users. Regardless of the option chosen, add detection for POST requests to /__openclaw__/mcp-app/view carrying a tools/call body from sessions that never held operator.write scope, and rotate any operator.read tokens that were exposed to less-trusted callers while unpatched.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenClaw's Gateway exposes MCP Apps through a standalone HTTP host at /__openclaw__/mcp-app/view, where access is mediated by short-lived, HMAC-signed standalone tickets rather than long-lived credentials. The vulnerable code path lives in src/gateway/mcp-app-standalone.ts: a ticket is minted by the mcp.app.view method via createMcpAppStandaloneTicket, binds a session key and a view identifier into a signed payload, and is later redeemed by resolveTicketActiveView and the supportsStandaloneToolOperations gate before any tools/call request is dispatched to the MCP runtime. Pre-fix, the ticket binding comparison matched only on viewId, and supportsStandaloneToolOperations evaluated only the originating run's lease fields - allowedAppToolNames defined and readOnly not true - while never consulting the ticket issuer's own Gateway scope (whether the issuer actually held operator.write). Because the check was scoped to the run's App-tool grant rather than the intersection of issuer scope and run grant, a read-only issuer could obtain a ticket whose authority exceeded its own. The remediation encodes a new toolOperationsAuthorized boolean into the ticket binding itself (including in formatTicket and the binding equality check) and threads it through resolveTicketActiveView as StandaloneTicketActiveView.toolOperationsAuthorized, so the final authorization decision becomes the conjunction of the issuer's scope, the live App-tool allowlist, and the non-readOnly requirement, revalidated on every request. This is the classic confused-deputy / missing-scope-binding pattern captured by CWE-863: the ticket is treated as a bearer capability without carrying the privilege level of the principal that minted it.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenClaw before 2026.9.4 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the mcp.app.view method that allows read-scoped operators to execute MCP App tools requiring operator.write scope. Attackers with operator.read tokens can obtain a standalone ticket from mcp.app.view and redeem it at the MCP app view endpoint to invoke state-changing tools without proper authorization checks.
