MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an OpenClaw deployment running multiple sandboxed sessions (or processing untrusted content) that share a Gateway host, with the media pipeline / media-understanding attachment functions in use. The attacker must control a sandboxed session (PR:L) and cause the Gateway to resolve a media/attachment path against the overbroad local-root allowlist that includes shared workspace or sibling-sandbox parent directories. Exploitation is limited to reading files (confidentiality only - no write or DoS), is gated by an attack requirement (AT:P) that the media staging path be exercised, and does not apply to single-session or non-sandboxed deployments. Patched in 2026.9.5, which fails closed when a session's workspace is not mounted (workspaceAccess 'none'). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded confidentiality issue rather than a top-tier emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.0 (Medium): network-reachable but gated by an attack requirement (AT:P) and requiring low privileges (PR:L), with high confidentiality impact and zero integrity/availability impact - consistent with an incorrect-authorization (CWE-863) cross-session file-read. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is present in the supplied data, so exploitation is currently theoretical: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The PR:L is credible because the attacker must already control a sandboxed session (or route untrusted content through it); this is a privilege-escalation-of-data-access within an already-multi-tenant/sandboxed deployment, not a drive-by remote read. No conflicting signals across sources: description, CWE-863, and the CVSS impact profile (confidentiality-only) all align, and the linked PR diff confirms the root cause (default local-path roots re-merged the shared workspace/sandbox parents, defeating per-session scoping). Realistic priority is Medium - meaningful only for operators running OpenClaw with multiple untrusted sandboxed sessions sharing a Gateway. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls one sandboxed OpenClaw session (or can feed untrusted content into it) references a media/attachment path pointing at a sibling session's sandbox or the shared workspace. Because the Gateway's local media-root allowlist fails to restrict reads to the active session, the media pipeline reads and returns that cross-session file, disclosing another tenant's data. No public exploit is known, and exploitation requires the media-understanding/attachment pipeline to be exercised (AT:P), so it is not a trivial one-shot remote read. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026
Sandbox isolation bypass in OpenClaw before 2026.9.5 allows an attacker who controls a sandboxed session to read files belonging to sibling session sandboxes or shared workspace directories through the Gateway's media pipeline. The root cause is an incorrect authorization check (CWE-863): the Gateway's local media root allowlist is overbroad, so media and attachment path resolution is not confined to the active session, and untrusted content can drive the same read path. Impact is confidentiality-only, is gated on a multi-session or untrusted-content deployment that exercises the media staging path, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; the vendor shipped a fail-closed fix in 2026.9.5.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to OpenClaw 2026.9.5 or later, which is the vendor-released fix: the scoped media root set becomes authoritative, sandbox sessions default to workspaceAccess 'none' (fail closed) when access metadata is absent, and absolute host-workspace media paths are no longer staged for unmounted sandboxes - see the release notes at https://docs.openclaw.ai/releases/2026.9.5. The upstream change is visible in pull request https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/144347 and commit https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/commit/fca04893b5b337d2eb70a6ba41f03fc8e33eff83; deployments that build from source rather than consume a tagged release should apply that commit and re-verify the media path tests. If upgrading immediately is not possible, reduce exposure by not co-locating mutually untrusted sessions or untrusted media content on the same Gateway host, restricting workspace mounts so sessions never share a common workspace parent (set workspace access to 'none' where the sandbox does not need host files), and disabling or narrowing the media-understanding/attachment pipeline for untrusted sessions - each of these limits functionality (attachments and media-driven replies will fail for affected sessions) and none fully replaces the patch because the overbroad allowlist lives inside the same code path. No vendor-released patch version other than 2026.9.5 is confirmed by the provided data; monitor the vendor advisory and VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openclaw-before-2026.9.5-sandbox-isolation-bypass-via-media-pipelines for updates.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenClaw is a Node/TypeScript agent runtime whose Gateway hosts multiple sandboxed sessions; each session's workspace is mounted into its sandbox with an access mode (read-write, read-only, or 'none' when not mounted at all). Media and attachment handling is a separate pipeline: src/media/local-roots.ts defines the allowlist of local roots permitted for media reads, and src/media-understanding/runner.attachments.ts and src/auto-reply/reply/reply-media-paths.ts resolve and stage media URLs before they are handed to the sandbox mapping. The defect (CWE-863, incorrect authorization) is that sessionless default roots - the shared workspace parent and sandbox parents - were merged into the per-session scoped root set, so the 'active session' boundary was never enforced; a sandboxed session or untrusted content could therefore cause the Gateway to read files from sibling sandboxes or shared workspace directories via the media pipeline. The upstream patch makes the scoped root set authoritative (includeDefaultLocalPathRoots: false), fails closed by treating missing access metadata as unmounted (workspaceAccess defaults to 'none'), refuses to stage absolute host-workspace media paths for sessions whose workspace is not mounted, and, when the workspace is unmounted, confines persisted reply media to the session's own sandbox root rather than the host agent workspace.

DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw before 2026.9.5 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the Gateway's local media root allowlist that breaks filesystem isolation between sandboxed sessions. Sandboxed sessions or untrusted content can cause the Gateway to read files from sibling session sandboxes or shared workspace directories through media pipeline functions that fail to restrict reads to the active session.
