| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target Junos OS / Junos OS Evolved device to be configured as a VXLAN tunnel endpoint (VTEP) with overlay-ping processing active, and the attacker must occupy the same Layer-2 adjacency (AV:A) to send VXLAN overlay-ping traffic to that local VTEP - it is not remotely reachable across routed/Internet paths. No authentication is required (PR:N) and no user interaction is needed (UI:N). The primary limiting factors are the adjacency requirement and the dependency on VXLAN overlay being deployed; devices not configured for VXLAN/VTEP are not exposed. Impact is confined to disclosure of stale PFE packet memory (low confidentiality), with no integrity or availability consequence. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity information-disclosure flaw (CVSS 4.0 base 5.3, vendor-assigned) whose real-world priority is modest and bounded by its access requirements. The CVSS 4.0 vector reports an adjacent attack vector (AV:A), low complexity (AC:L), no privileges (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N), but only low confidentiality impact (VC:L) with no integrity or availability impact - consistent with leaking stale PFE packet memory rather than enabling code execution or takeover. No EPSS score was supplied in the input, the CVE is not on CISA KEV, and no public proof-of-concept is referenced, so all three exploitation-likelihood signals are either absent or negative: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The SSVC/exploitation framing is therefore low-urgency - the dominant risk-limiting factor is AV:A, which requires the attacker to be on the same Layer-2 segment as a configured VXLAN VTEP, not reachable across the Internet. There are no conflicting signals (CVSS adjacency aligns with the description's 'adjacent attacker' and 'local VTEP' language); the main gap is the missing EPSS value, which prevents a quantitative exploitation-probability comparison. Overall this is a legitimate patch-in-normal-cycle item for VXLAN-deploying operators, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker positioned on the same Layer-2 segment as a Junos device acting as a VXLAN tunnel endpoint sends crafted VXLAN overlay-ping traffic to the local VTEP. Because L2ALM mishandles a length-parameter inconsistency (CWE-130), the device returns stale packet-forwarding-engine memory contents, leaking fragments of previously processed traffic. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires adjacency rather than remote Internet access. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Improper handling of a length parameter in the L2ALM component of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to read stale packet memory from the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) by sending crafted VXLAN overlay-ping traffic to a local VXLAN tunnel endpoint (VTEP). Only devices configured as VTEPs with overlay-ping processing active are exposed, and the attacker must share Layer-2 adjacency with the target, so the flaw is not reachable across routed or Internet paths; impact is limited to low-severity confidentiality loss with no integrity or availability effect. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no indication of active exploitation. Per the vendor, patches are available; the assigned CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3, and our independent assessment rates it as a medium-severity information-disclosure issue whose real-world priority is modest and bounded by its adjacency and configuration prerequisites.
RemediationAI
Juniper has released fixed software, so the primary action is to upgrade to a patched release: Junos OS 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3, or 26.2R1-S2, or the corresponding Junos OS Evolved builds 23.2R2-S7.7-EVO, 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO, 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO, 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.2X100-D35-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO, 25.4X300-D40-EVO, or 26.2R1-S2-EVO, as detailed in the vendor advisory https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA112187. Because the attack surface is VXLAN overlay-ping delivered to a local VTEP from the same Layer-2 segment, effective compensating controls where immediate upgrade is not possible are: disable VXLAN overlay-ping / OAM echo handling on VTEP interfaces if that capability is not operationally required (trade-off: loss of VXLAN path-MTU and overlay reachability diagnostics); restrict the Layer-2 segment that can reach the VTEP by applying port-level MAC/ACL filters, private VLANs, or 802.1X/NAC on the adjacent access ports so only trusted hosts share the VTEP's broadcast domain (trade-off: tighter access control and onboarding overhead, but no loss of VXLAN forwarding); and, where the VTEP is not strictly needed, deprovision the VXLAN/VTEP configuration entirely (trade-off: loss of overlay connectivity). Note that the Evolved 23.4X100 branch has no listed fixed release, so devices on that train should be migrated to a supported EVO release. There is no indication of active exploitation, so remediation can follow normal maintenance cycles, but the upgrade should be prioritized on any edge device that terminates VXLAN from semi-trusted Layer-2 segments.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a CWE-130 improper handling of length parameter inconsistency affecting L2ALM (the Layer 2 Address Learning Manager), the Junos component responsible for MAC address learning and Layer 2 forwarding state, operating in the data plane on the PFE. When a Junos device is configured as a VXLAN tunnel endpoint and processes VXLAN overlay-ping (OAM) traffic, a length field supplied in the encapsulated packet is not reconciled with the actual buffer or parameter bounds, so data is read beyond the intended region and stale PFE packet memory can be returned or exposed to the sender. The affected technology stack is VXLAN data-plane overlay networking combined with Junos' L2ALM learning logic; the root cause class is a parsing/validation defect rather than a memory-safety corruption, which is consistent with the observed impact being limited to information disclosure (C:L) with no write or crash primitive. Affected CPEs are cpe:2.3:a:juniper_networks:junos_os and cpe:2.3:a:juniper_networks:junos_os_evolved, i.e. both the classic FreeBSD-derived Junos OS and the Linux-based Junos OS Evolved platforms share the same flaw. Exploitation requires the attacker to occupy the same Layer-2 segment as the VTEP and to have VXLAN overlay-ping enabled, which is why the assessed vector is AV:A/PR:N/UI:N (adjacent, unauthenticated, no user interaction).
