Exploitation Conditions

Requires that the operator launch OpenClaw (>=2026.4.25, <2026.8.1) inside attacker-controlled workspace content containing a crafted .env file, AND that Azure Speech is configured with a key and region but WITHOUT a trusted endpoint override set. The specific trigger is the workspace env-var filter failing to block variables ending in _ENDPOINT, letting the untrusted .env set AZURE_SPEECH_ENDPOINT, which Azure Speech prefers over the configured region. A voice-synthesis or voice-list request must then be issued to send the key to the attacker endpoint. Limiting factors: local attack vector (attacker must control workspace files), required operator interaction (starting the tool on hostile content and invoking a speech request), and the non-exploitability of deployments that pin a trusted endpoint override or do not use Azure Speech.

Impact

This is a credential-exposure flaw (CWE-522) in the open-source OpenClaw agent framework. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.8 (medium), and its emphasis on a LOCAL attack vector with required user interaction is honest: exploitation depends on an operator actually launching OpenClaw against attacker-controlled workspace content while Azure Speech is configured with a key+region and no trusted endpoint override. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so all real-risk signals point to low likelihood of opportunistic exploitation. Impact is bounded to confidentiality of a single third-party credential (the Azure Speech key) with no integrity or availability effect (VI:N/VA:N) and no scope change to OpenClaw itself - the abused resource is the operator's separate Azure Speech account. Net: a legitimate supply-chain/workspace-trust issue worth patching, but a niche, precondition-heavy, medium-severity credential leak rather than an urgent priority. Note the vector states PR:N (unauthenticated) yet the practical prerequisite is that a trusting operator run the tool on hostile content - the 'authentication' gate is operator behavior, not an OpenClaw login.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker seeds a repository or workspace with a malicious .env file containing AZURE_SPEECH_ENDPOINT pointing at an attacker-controlled host. An operator who has Azure Speech configured with a key and region (but no explicit trusted endpoint override) starts OpenClaw in that workspace; the next voice-synthesis or voice-list request sends the operator's Azure Speech key in the header to the attacker's endpoint, which the attacker then replays against the operator's real Azure Speech resource. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Credential exposure in the npm-distributed OpenClaw agent framework (versions 2026.4.25 through 2026.8.0) lets an attacker-controlled workspace .env file set AZURE_SPEECH_ENDPOINT and redirect Azure Speech traffic so that the operator's Azure Speech API key is sent in a request header to a host of the attacker's choosing. OpenClaw's workspace environment-variable filter failed to block variables ending in the _ENDPOINT suffix, and Azure Speech prefers an explicit endpoint over the configured region, so a subsequent voice-synthesis or voice-list request leaks the key, which can then be reused against the operator's Azure Speech resource. The CVSS:4.0 score is 6.8 with AV:L/PR:N/UI:P - exploitation requires the operator to launch OpenClaw inside hostile workspace content with Azure Speech configured by key and region and no trusted endpoint override set; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: OpenClaw 2026.8.1 - upgrade immediately from the affected 2026.4.25 through 2026.8.0 range, per https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/security/advisories/GHSA-pfrw-r5vr-89hw and https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openclaw-before-2026.8.1-credential-exposure-via-endpoint-override. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to set an explicit trusted endpoint override for Azure Speech so the client never falls back to a workspace-supplied value; this pins outbound speech traffic to the operator's own regional endpoint, with the trade-off that the correct regional hostname must be known and maintained. Alternatively, remove or clear the Azure Speech key and region configuration, which fully closes the leak path but disables speech synthesis and voice-list functionality, or avoid launching OpenClaw inside workspaces from untrusted sources, since opening a hostile .env is the trigger. Because the key is transmitted to the attacker endpoint only when a speech request is issued, treat any Azure Speech key used in an affected configuration as potentially compromised: rotate it in the Azure portal, scope it to the intended resource, and review Azure Speech usage logs for unexpected endpoint activity. These are compensating controls only; the 2026.8.1 vendor patch is the authoritative fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenClaw is an open-source agent framework distributed via npm that can load a workspace directory containing a .env file, whose variables are filtered before being exported into the runtime environment. That filter's blocklist was incomplete: it did not cover provider-specific variables ending in the _ENDPOINT suffix, allowing an untrusted workspace file to inject AZURE_SPEECH_ENDPOINT. Azure Speech's client prefers an explicitly supplied endpoint over one derived from a configured region, so the injected value becomes the request destination while the configured credential - the Azure Speech key - is still attached to the outgoing request header. This is the classic CWE-522 (Insufficiently Protected Credentials) pattern, in which a secret is transmitted to a destination the operator does not control. Authentication into OpenClaw is not the barrier: the CVSS:4.0 vector records PR:N (no privileges required), and the real prerequisites are local control of the workspace content plus operator interaction (UI:P) to start the tool and issue a speech request; this aligns with the independent CVSS:3.1 assessment (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), which likewise scores confidentiality-only impact. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is version-agnostic, so the authoritative bound comes from EUVD-2026-87482 ("OpenClaw 2026.4.25 <2026.8.1"). Deployments that pin a trusted endpoint override, or that do not configure Azure Speech at all, are not reachable by this path.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenClaw is an npm-distributed application. In versions >= 2026.4.25 and < 2026.8.1, the workspace environment-variable filter did not block variables ending in _ENDPOINT, so an untrusted workspace .env file could set AZURE_SPEECH_ENDPOINT. Azure Speech preferred that value over the configured region, so when a synthesis or voice-list request was made, the attacker-selected endpoint received the operator's Azure Speech key in the request header, allowing the key to be reused against the operator's Azure Speech resource. Exploitation requires an operator to start OpenClaw in attacker-controlled workspace content with Azure Speech configured with a key and region and no trusted endpoint override set. The issue is fixed in 2026.8.1.
