| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to open or import a maliciously crafted LBM (Interleaved Bitmap/Deluxe Paint) image file in GIMP 3.0.6; the overflow is triggered specifically by the LBM parser's failure to validate user-supplied data length before copying into a fixed-size stack buffer. The decisive limiting factor is mandatory user interaction (UI:R) - there is no network-facing or automatic trigger, so the attacker depends on social engineering to get the target to open the file or visit a page that serves it. Code executes only with the privileges of the local user running GIMP, and no authentication or special privilege is needed by the attacker (PR:N). |
| Impact | This is a genuine, patch-worthy memory-safety flaw but NOT a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 3.0 vector (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 7.8) is internally consistent with the description: AV:L reflects that exploitation requires the victim to locally open or load a crafted LBM file rather than a remote network-reachable service, and UI:R captures the mandatory user interaction. The 'remote attackers' framing in the title refers to malicious-file/malicious-page delivery, not unauthenticated network access - this is a client-side file-parsing bug, and the AV:L rating is appropriate; there is no conflict once interpreted correctly. On exploitation signals, the picture is reassuring: no CISA KEV listing, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no EPSS score was supplied so widespread opportunistic exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input. This was a coordinated ZDI disclosure (ZDI-CAN-28311 / ZDI-25-1137) with a vendor patch already available, which lowers urgency relative to actively exploited bugs. The limiting factor is the required social-engineering step (victim must open a malicious LBM/image file), which caps real-world impact to targeted or opportunistic phishing rather than mass exploitation. Net: real priority for environments that process untrusted image files, but a high-CVSS-but-interaction-gated issue rather than a wormable or server-side critical. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious LBM (Interleaved Bitmap) file whose embedded length field exceeds the destination stack buffer, then delivers it via email, a download link, or a malicious web page. When the GIMP user opens or imports the file, the oversized data overflows the stack buffer and the attacker achieves arbitrary code execution in the context of the GIMP process. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the flaw was found and reported by Trend Micro ZDI. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Stack-based buffer overflow in GIMP 3.0.6's LBM (Interleaved Bitmap/Deluxe Paint) importer allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user who opens a crafted image. The parser copies attacker-supplied data into a fixed-size stack buffer without first validating its length (CWE-121); the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is 7.8 with PR:N/UI:R, so the attacker needs no credentials but must convince the victim to open or import the malicious file. No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, and this is a genuine, patch-worthy memory-safety flaw but not a drop-everything emergency because exploitation depends on user interaction and yields only local-user code execution.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix: upgrade GIMP to a release containing upstream commit 481cdbbb97746be1145ec3a633c567a68633c521 (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/commit/481cdbbb97746be1145ec3a633c567a68633c521); the provided data does not name the first patched release version, so confirm the version in the GIMP 3.0.x release notes or via the ZDI advisory (https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-25-1137/) before deploying. Until patched, treat .lbm/.ilbm/.iff images as untrusted: block or strip those attachments at mail and web gateways (side effect: legitimate Deluxe Paint artwork is rejected) and warn users not to open image files from unsolicited sources. Run GIMP as an unprivileged user and inside an OS-level sandbox such as Flatpak/Snap confinement, the macOS App Sandbox, or Windows Sandbox so a successful overflow is contained to the sandbox rather than the host (trade-off: reduced access to host files and some plug-ins). If LBM support is not needed, removing or disabling the LBM import plug-in eliminates the attack surface entirely at the cost of losing that file-format capability.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GIMP's LBM loader (the file-lbm plug-in) handles Interleaved Bitmap/ILBM images from the IFF family used by Deluxe Paint and Electronic Arts. The format is chunk-based: FORM/ILBM containers carry BMHD headers plus BODY data typically compressed with ByteRun1 (PackBits) run-length encoding. In GIMP 3.0.6 (CPE cpe:2.3:a:gimp:gimp:3.0.6) the parser fails to validate the length of user-supplied data before copying it into a fixed-size stack buffer, the classic CWE-121 stack-based buffer overflow; an oversized chunk or run length overwrites saved registers and the return address, giving the attacker control of the instruction pointer. The flaw was reported through the Zero Day Initiative as ZDI-CAN-28311 and published as ZDI-25-1137, and the upstream fix is GitLab commit 481cdbbb97746be1145ec3a633c567a68633c521. Because the overflow is reachable only through the local file-import path, code executes in the context of the current GIMP process under the victim's account, not over the network and not with elevated privileges.

DescriptionCVE.org
GIMP LBM File Parsing Stack-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GIMP. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of LBM files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-28311.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity memory-safety flaw in GIMP 3.0.6's LBM image importer could let a crafted image run code with the rights of the user who opens it. This creates workstation-level compromise risk for design, marketing, and other staff who handle externally sourced image files, not a broad server outage. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, so leadership should prioritize patching and user awareness rather than emergency response.
